Author has written 9 stories for Dracula, Misc. Books, Phantom of the Opera, Hunchback of Notre Dame, and Van Helsing.
English is not my first language, but I am doing my best. I am just an amateur, doing this for fun, so please, don´t sweat it. Constructive criticism is needed, flaming... not. Yes, net can be sewer. Don´t be one reason to it.
My fandoms: Gothic romances. I am a Universal and especially Hammer fan: rich colours, historical dresses and sets, vampires and other monsters! Sumptuous and fun. Keep your Scorseses and Tarantinos, these are movies for me!
Bram Stoker´s Dracula is a divine movie, but makes Stoker spinning in his grave. As adaptation of Stoker´s novel, it is God-awful, mistitled travesty: virginal Lucy is nymphomaniac, Dracula is Vlad the Impaler who is a "romantic hero" (who´s next? Pol Pot?), and so on. But as a movie, it is brilliant mix of Victorian and Gothic, period and fantasy, with interesting characters and plot, very Hammeresque movie.
I am big fan of Theophile Gautier´s La Morte Amoureuse or Clarimonde. It is bathetic but writing and vampire siren Clarimonde are sumptuous, to say the least.
Angela Carter´s Bloody chamber and other stories is another masterpiece of writing and imagery, although polluted by really stinky ageism (youth good, old people bad) and some equally sleazy gross-out touches.
Just now I am obsessed with music of Notre Dame de Paris the musical. It has ugly sets and costumes, and some HUGE plot changes - Frollo tortures Esmeralda (!) instead of himself and tries rape by blackmail in dungeon scene - but the music is WONDERFUL and orginal French cast is very good, especially Frollo, who is hands-down best that I have seen.
I am proud Twineutral and anti-Twilight-hate which pollutes the net as irritating fad. "Real vampires don´t sparkle, they burn in the sun!" Um, no, you illiterates, vampires pre-Nosferatu (1922) didn´t burn in the sun. Vampire fiction and especially folklore are much much older than awful Buffy. "Edward is a stalker and abusive boyfriend!" Unlike Lestat, serial sex killer. "Edward is not a killer!" So rape and kill, but don´t stalk. "Edward is gay!" He is happy? I don´t know, is it bad to be happy? "There is not vampire stories for men anymore!" Waaa, not every movie is made for men and boys and those damn female writers... What, is this 19th century?
Anne Rice writes beautifully, she has talent and taste, Master of Rampling Gate is masterpiece, but usually her plots and characters leave me a bit cold.
Writers I loathe: criminally overrated Stephen Dung and his potty fetish (Dreamcatchers etc) peppering atrociously boring storylines. Poppy Z Brite, Nancy A Collins, David J Schow, Joe R Lansdale, whole "splatterpunk" crowd or however they are called. Dungheap is dungheap.
Speaking about dungheaps: horror genre (non-Gothic post 1969) and exploitation - yes, even if it is presented as art. Torture porn. Toilet comedy (what apt name!).
