I write for a lot of fandoms, but rarely the same one more than once or twice. I read even more of them. I'm on Tumblr, Fictionpress, Livejournal, and the AO3 under the name Pyralis Anacreon, but I'm most active here.
Pyralis' Writing Tips:
Don't have big chunks of paragraphs, especially not right after each other. The wall of text will scare a reader away.
Dialogue is your friend. Instead of the narrator telling the reader something, have one character explain it to another whenever possible.
Get a sense for building tension, suspense, and drama. That's something that'll come with practice.
For God's sake, if you know that you're someone who can't tell the difference between your, you're, their, there, and they're, get a freakin beta to catch it for you.
Holding chapters hostage in exchange for reviews makes you come across as a six-year-old holding their breath until they get what they want. Don't be that kid. If it's good enough, the reviews will come.
Don't insert song titles in your fic to plug your favorite music. In the beginning AN you could say, wrote this while listening to... but in the middle of the fic it's just a shameless plug.
Write like you're speaking to someone, telling them a story. Punctuation is your friend.
Keep reading books. You don't need to study grammar and spelling, read enough and it will become natural to know which word to use.
Just keep reading books in general, actually.
Navigating FFNet: Tips for finding the good stories
Go to your favorite author's profile page. Look up their favorite stories. See if they're in a community.
Use the new filters to rank fics by number of favorites, reviews, or follows.
Use the Word Count filter set to 100,000. Very rarely will badfic reach over 100,000 words.
