I don't dislike all the Weasleys, just Molly (who needs to learn how to let children grow without smothering them though I think there might be some psychological reasoning behind that), Ron and Ginny. Ron because let's face it the boy's an idiot. For starters, in his second year he saw the bars on Harry's windows and heard his brothers tell their mother that Harry was being starved and is still jealous of him when, to Harry, Ron is the one who has 'everything'. Also I'm sure Ron doesn't know abuse when he sees it - that or he (and the twins) 'forgot' courtesy of manipulative!Dumbledore (which makes sense because Harry needed to stay at Privet Drive due to the blood wards). Because I've wondered - did he just deliberately forget that? Or did he, and the twins, succumb to the memory charms of manipulative!Dumbledore because of the blood wards... I had to wonder, because as callous as the twins are they seemed to be genuinely shocked at Harry's situation and I don't think they'd've just done nothing. After all, they went to all that trouble of 'borrowing' their dad's enchanted car, driving across Britain, and busting Harry out of Privet Drive just because he didn't reply to a few letters? Then what did they do after they saw him in Privet Drive with bars on his windows and cat flaps on the door? They accidentally on purpose left an enchanted sweet (that could have injured Dudley, or killed him btw) on the floor... So its that or they were simply talked out of doing anything, if you don't subscribe to the above theory of manipulative!Dumbledore (because Muggles are strange people, aren't they? Just ask your father— as I can imagine him saying). But, even so I think Ron led a sheltered life. He knows little about the way the world works yet doesn't try to change that because he's lazy - as shown by his dependence on Hermione and her school notes. And to those people who say give Ron a break because he has so many older brothers to contend with - that's a lame excuse. The incident with the Mirror of Erised showed that Ron desired to be the best of his family, of his brothers - distinguished as holding both titles held by his two eldest brothers, yet he did nothing to achieve that. The only things that could help Ron in his quest for fame were his associations with Harry, and later Hermione. Skill-wise isn't Ron supposed to be good at chess? Then why didn't he join or start a chess club - he has a skill but doesn't utilise it. He could have been helpful during the war, coming up with strategies and whatnot for the order perhaps, but he didn't. That's wasted potential right there. Ron's jealousy and all round idiocy also hinders his so called friendship with Harry - namely in GoF and DH. So your supposed best friend has his name come out of the Triwizard Cup and despite him saying otherwise you think he put his name in, alongside the other inconstant members of the school, and British Wizarding population in general. It seems not only did his jealousy cloud his judgement to the point of abandoning his best friend, but he also paid no heed to the fact that people had died in previous tournaments. Thus the reason for the age line. It's as if he never knew Harry at all though, the last thing Harry wanted was eternal glory. He could barely stand his BWL status as it was. After that Harry should have demoted him to acquaintance, and then after DH nothing. That may seem harsh or OTT but there's a quote that's says, 'a true friend stays while the rest walk out'. And that's without taking in to account what Ron's desertion would have meant if he d been interrogated by snatchers, who he only just managed to avoid. And that hardly takes into account the DH epilouge which shows that Ron hasn't matured one bit. He makes comments about purebloods and the Malfoys that seem a weaker invert to what Draco (who had changed, albeit because of disillusionment) had been known to say about the Weasleys and 'mudbloods'. Ron might have been joking but then why wasn't it implied by, say, a wink or a smile? I have to highlight when he tells Rose, his impressionable daughter to make sure she beats Scorpius at every test - that's smacks of petty prejudice. He doesn't even know Scorpius, so he can't say he's a miniDraco. Now, why are muggle raised Harry and Hermione friends with this sort of person? Because JK willed it so, for some reason. Same thing goes for the Harry/Ginny pairing. I mean, chest monster - that's either the worst metaphor ever written, or its literal... These preDH posts, not written by me, summarise my feelings on Ginny as a character: http:///42258.html?thread=101138 I would scroll through the comments for more specific (i.e. even more quotation supported) viewpoints, courtesy of the poster and/or other readers. This post DH article elaborates on my feelings on H/G: http:///why-harry-potter-and-ginny-weasley-are-the-least-romantic-literary-couple-of-the-age/ there are also great debates in the comments. And also this meta essay on the differences between GoF Ginny and OotP Ginny: http:///110043.html?style=site&thread=3445467&view=top-only Harry was bullied viciously as a child by his cousin (to say nothing of his abuse at the hands of the other Dursleys) so it makes no sense to me that he turned away Draco, yet continued to be best friends with Ron , the poor, ill-mannered Gryffindor version of Malfoy, and fancied Ginny, who referred to Luna (a fellow outcast) as Loony and Fleur as phlegm. On the latter issue Harry even 'choked on his cornflakes' - and I thought earlier in the book (HBP) he'd tried to defend Fleur to Ginny... I've been bullied, though not to the same extent as Harry, and I've said less than nice things to my friends (and them to me), and I've seen and heard people being teased and done nothing as well as others but I felt at least ashamed after. I certainly never laughed. So basically I'm not sure what JKR is trying to do with the characterisation of Harry Potter and co. Harry Potter certainly doesn't act like he had been abused, granted abused children won't act the same as others in their position if you want to bring psychology into this. I don't have to mention that the Harry Potter books are popular, and not just with their intended children audience, but I think it's the children are the most affected. There are those who wish for their Hogwarts letter to come in the post, even when they're past eleven years old. So even though this is a fantasy series it is still full of fascinating characters who seem to come alive with every page turned. Also there is real life basis in them too (as they are based on real people, however loosely) there has to be for the characters to be relateable, but even without that there will be readers who wonder what so-and-so would have done in this situation and things like that. And there are FF writers who dabble in modern/all human AUs. So it is grating that after everything the boy under the cupboard - the hero of the story ended up with the hot, popular, athletic girl. It sounds like a cliche (never mind the fact that she was his best friend's sister) and it is. There are enough cliches in the book series as is. That said JK did acknowledge that she wasn't a romance writer - and the books would have been fine without it. All the romances did was showcase how 'ordinary' the main teen characters were in the end, despite their humble beginnings. Personally I think it would have been better if Harry had been friends with Luna and Neville earlier. Then, them along with Hermione would have gone on to solve mysteries while gaining friends and confidence for the first time. That, done with the right amount of character development would have been a great fantasy series for children who were 'odd' and/or had trouble socialising. That plus the Weasley twins would equal perfection. And if it wasn't written within the boundary of a children's book; that said there wouldn't have to be romance in it. Given all their backgrounds romance would be a while coming, even if it was friends first. There's a plot bunny if ever there was one. Okay rant over - and that's without taking into account my feelings on Ron/Hermione. All I'm going to say on that is you can't spell Hermione without Ron? Well, it's very hard to spell moron without Ron either. Does that sound like someone a muggleborn called the 'smartest witch of her age' would eventually go on to marry? A teenage girl about 17 named Diane had gone to visit some friends one evening and time passed quickly as each shared their various experiences of the past year. She ended up staying longer than planned, and had to walk home alone. She wasn't afraid because it was a small town and she lived only a few blocks away. As she walked along under the tall elm trees, Diane asked God to keep her safe from harm and danger. When she reached the alley, which was a short cut to her house, she decided to take it. However, halfway down the alley she noticed a man standing at the end as though he were waiting for her. She became uneasy and began to pray, asking for God's protection. Instantly a comforting feeling of quietness and security wrapped round her, she felt as though someone was walking with her. When she reached the end of the alley, she walked right past the man and arrived home safely. The following day, she read in the newspaper that a young girl had been raped in the same alley just twenty minutes after she had been there. Feeling overwhelmed by this tragedy and the fact that it could have been her, she began to weep. Thanking the Lord for her safety and to help this young woman, she decided to go to the police station. She felt she could recognize the man, so she told them her story. The police asked her if she would be willing to look at a lineup to see if she could identify him. She agreed and immediately pointed out the man she had seen in the alley the night before. When the man was told he had been identified, he immediately broke down and confessed. The officer thanked Diane for her bravery and asked if there was anything they could do for her. She asked if they would ask the man one question. Diane was curious as to why he had not attacked her. When the policeman asked him, he answered, "Because she wasn't alone. She had two tall men walking on either side of her." Amazingly, whether you believe or not, you're never alone. But you sir, When you're born you're PINK, When you grow up you're WHITE, When you're sick, you're GREEN, When you go in the sun you turn RED, When you're cold you turn BLUE, And when you die you turn PURPLE. And you have the nerve to call me colored?" The black man then sat back down and the white man walked away... 'Never Argue With A Woman' One morning, the husband returns the boat to their lakeside cottage after several hours of fishing and decides to take a nap. Although not familiar with the lake, the wife decides to take the boat out. She motors out a short distance, anchors, puts her feet up, and begins to read her book. The peace and solitude are magnificent. Along comes a Fish and Game Warden in his boat. He pulls up alongside the woman and says, 'Good morning, Ma'am. What are you doing?' 'Reading a book,' she replies, (thinking, 'Isn't that obvious?'). 'You're in a Restricted Fishing Area,' he informs her. 'I'm sorry, officer, but I'm not fishing. I'm reading.' 'Yes, but I see you have all the equipment. For all I know you could start at any moment. I'll have to take you in and write you up.' 'If you do that, I'll have to charge you with sexual assault,' says the woman. 'But I haven't even touched you,' says the Game Warden. 'That's true, but you have all the equipment.
