'political correctness kills creativity' if you can't create something without furthering the oppression of minorities, you aren’t a very creative person. — curseboxes

Dear white people, please have all the seats. Y’all make all kinds of excuses to use the n-word, to call me a chink, to tell my brown friends to go back to their country, to make them apologize for 9/11, tell me to get over racism cuz ‘slavery ended 400 years ago’, tell me that ‘I’m just appreciating Indians by wearing this headdress’, oh, but the second BuzzFeed makes a post about liking Starbucks we’re being racist and perpetuating stereotypes. Oh. Okay. That’s cool. You have your television shows and music videos and billboard ads and magazine covers and movies that feature 99.99% white people but the second that I step up and ask if I can have a t.v. show that positively represents Asians I’m asking for too much. That’s just too much to handle right now what with all the white people blazoned across every media outlet. And before any of you think about responding with some baseless comment like, “These stereotypes are really bad; they reinforce segregation” just know that no one is killing you for these stereotypes. It does not affect you getting a job, or being objectified. Your ancestors erased entire histories and communities and you benefit from this so don’t try and read me because I made a joke about you wearing Uggs and liking Starbucks.

Edit: One more thing, don’t use the ‘we’re all human’ excuse or the ‘I have a/n (insert race here) friend’ or the ‘I don’t see colour’ argument. Yes, we’re all human, but our life experiences are different, your small group of (insert race here) friends doesn’t mean you can say whatever slur you want, and ignoring colour invalidates and delegitmizes people’s identity, history, and stories, just cuz you don’t wanna talk about it. — Sean Kua

If you’re pushing a woman to change her behavior to ‘prevent’ rape, rather than telling a perpetrator to change his, you’re really saying ‘make sure he rapes the other girl.’ — We deserve to live full lives: Another view

(o)

The Great Celebrity Naked Photo Leak of 2014 – or perhaps we should call it The Great Celebrity Naked Photo Leak of August 2014, given that this happens so often that there won’t be only one this year – is meant to remind women of their place. Don’t get too high and mighty, ladies. Don’t step out of line. Don’t do anything to upset or disappoint men who feel entitled to your time, bodies, affection or attention. Your bared body can always be used as a weapon against you. You bared body can always be used to shame and humiliate you. Your bared body is at once desired and loathed. — Roxane Gay

(o)

When you say things like “well when girls dress like that, what do you expect?”, you are saying:

1) Women’s bodies are inherently deserving of harassment and abuse and rape

and

2) Men are inherently abusive rapists

And both of these sentiments are horrifying and say a hell of a lot more about you than anyone else. - Jane

(o)

If no little girl is too young to experience sexual predation from her peers (let’s be real this shit starts in pre-school if not sooner) no teenage boy is too young to be shamed/punished for bullying girls, consuming pornography, or committing sexual assault. Boys grow into men who think these norms of violence are acceptable at the expense of the girls blamed for their own victimhood. Girls have to grow up too quickly and boys never do. — somethinglickedthiswaycums

Note: Saying things like “Not everything has to be about race or gender!!! I’m so tired of it! Just look at the message/story and don’t pay attention to representation (or lack thereof)! I see everyone as exactly the same, why can’t you??!!”

is code for: “Your desire to be represented and respected in media and the world at large is annoying and/or boring to me because I personally don’t understand or care about this problem; I don’t want to have to think about those things, or have to think critically about anything, or learn to find a way to enjoy something while still also being able to recognize that others might have a problem with one aspect of it. But I still feel the need to butt in to your conversation to scold you for daring to mention that there might be a problem.” — Julie Dillon

Systematic Sexism & Sexist Double Standards in Geek Culture & Excerpts from Straight White Male: The Lowest Difficulty Setting There Is

(o)

You’ve gotta work to unlearn systems of oppression you don’t personally experience, just like all men have to actively unlearn sexist behaviors they’re used to being rewarded for. This isn’t something to be offended by, it’s just something to work on. — nomoremrnicespice

"It's supposed to be a compliment" is a tool meant to make people feel stupid for their reactions. It makes them feel foolish for feeling objectified and threatened when they were objectified and threatened. — JustMargaret via youtube-ladies

When men say, “I only fuck girls with tight pussies.”

An un-aroused pussy.

A friend of mine posted something about catcalling and street harassment. To the absolute shock of … well, pretty much nobody, the very first comment on her post was a guy explaining why women shouldn’t be afraid of catcalling, and isn’t it funny how the women complaining aren’t the ones experiencing the “privilege” of being catcalled in the first place? Also, women wouldn’t be afraid if they carried guns, and the real threat are guys “in a dark van with no windows parked next to your car in the Walmart parking lot.”

His suggestion? “Now what would happen if a woman who’s the center of the cat call took the power back, walked up to the offending rake and asked for his number and told him to show a little respect and maybe if he was lucky she’d let him earn the opportunity to do some real cat calling?”

This is the point where I facepalmed so hard I gave myself a concussion.

Guys, is it really that hard to shut the hell up and listen instead of immediately trying to tell women why they’re wrong about their own lives and experiences?

It’s pathetically predictable.

  1. Woman complains about harassment.
  2. Dudebro feels uncomfortable.
  3. Dudebro tells woman why she’s wrong to feel that way.

Because Dudebro’s discomfort at women complaining about harassment is somehow more important and valid than women’s discomfort about actually being harassed.

The CDC put out a report this year about sexual violence, after completing more than 12,000 interviews. They found that one in five women have been raped in their lifetimes, and 99% of those rapes were committed by men. (The report states that about two percent of men were raped as well, which I strongly suspect is an underestimate. They also found that approximately 80% of those rapes were also committed by men.)

“But I’m not like those other men,” says Dudebro, waving the “Not All Men” flag with righteous pride.

Then stop acting like them.

- When a woman says she’s uncomfortable with something and wants you to knock it off, stop arguing. Stop telling her she’s wrong, and stop making excuses to keep doing it.

- Stop pretending it’s about complimenting women. (Here’s a tip: Compliments don’t go from, “Hey baby” to “Fuck you, you stuck-up bitch” in the blink of an eye.)

- Stop treating women as objects you’re entitled to instead of people.

You seriously want women to believe you’re not an asshole and a potential threat? Start by shutting up for a minute and actually listening to what women are saying. — Another Day, Another Mansplainer by Jim C. Hines

Groups like the KKK are Christian terrorist organizations.

Interesting how we’re always hearing how shameful and irresponsible it is to be a teen mom.

But we never hear the same messages directed at teen dads.

Or even the words “teen dad”.

It’s almost like society demonizes women’s sexuality and sexual choices while absolving men of all sexual responsibility and judgment. — misandry-mermaid

Looks like we need to have a conversation about false equivalences.

It’s deeply disingenuous to say that homophobia and heterophobia are the same thing, are two sides of the same coin. Transphobia and cisphobia aren’t some equitable mirror images of each other.

Homophobia, transphobia, these things are institutional, they are systematic, they are embedded in centuries of cultural norms, coded in language, written into law, and framed as natural. These things are ubiquitous and pose real tangible threats of harm and violence to marginalized communities.

Cisphobia and heterophobia, are not. They are reactions to abuse, they are responses to oppression. They lack the severity, the structural support, and the prevalence to do the harm that their “counterparts” do. Their roots are different, their effects are different, their contexts are different. — fandomsandfeminism

The Problem a.k.a Here’s society’s view on mothers:

Have kids in your teens: you’re too young, too uneducated and definitely irresponsible, and everyone will assume your child was an accident. And if you *did* get pregnant on purpose, then clearly you have deep-seated emotional issues, low self esteem, and no worthy aspirations. Also, you now have no prospects, either. Congrats!

Have kids in your twenties: you’re putting your career on hold and possibly curtailing your adventures in higher education, and as such are probably a brainwashed victim of the patriarchy; plus, shouldn’t you be out having fun and celebrating your youth? There’s plenty of time for kids later!

Have kids in your thirties: you’ve probably just freaked out about your ticking biological clock, despite the fact that you’ve clearly left it too late for safety’s sake. I mean, everyone KNOWS the quality of your eggs declines after 35, and anyway, you’ve just spent all this time building up a career, only to hamstring yourself with kids at the worst possible moment. Essentially, then, you’re selfish with no sense of timing.

Have kids in your forties or later: you’re WAY too old to be doing this and probably irresponsible as a result; at the very least, you won’t have enough energy for parenting, and the rest of the world should pity you accordingly.

Conclusion: Society secretly thinks that, somewhere between their 29th and 30th birthdays, all women experience a Magical Mezzanine Decade wherein they’re expected to find a partner, gain a career, become financially stable, fall pregnant and have 2.5 children without actually ageing either bodily or in fact, so that once it’s over, they can truthfully claim to have lived an appropriately wild and adventurous twenties while simultaneously being set to turn 30 with kids, a career and the perfect work-life balance already in place. Any woman who fails to do this is clearly just being intransigent, having consciously failed to use her Magical Mezzanine Decade to full effect - which, of course, makes her either selfish, stupid or both.

It should be noted, of course, that any woman who claims at any age not to want children is necessarily unnatural, unsympathetic or wrong. To whit:

Not wanting kids in your teens: you’re too young to know what you’re talking about - but don’t worry. You’ll know better once you’re older, sweetheart. Just wait and see.

Not wanting kids in your twenties: you’re an irresponsible feminazi party-girl who’s probably been brainwashed through prolonged exposure to a Liberal Arts education. Either that, or you’re just bitter you can’t keep a boyfriend.

Not wanting kids in your thirties: you’re a cold-hearted, selfish, career-oriented bitch with less human sentiment than a box of paperclips. Also, you’re probably bitter than you never had them earlier (see above, re: Magical Mezzanine Decade).

Not wanting kids in your forties or later: you’re in denial about having left it far too late to try, and are just trying to compensate accordingly. Or you could just be a screaming harpy. Or both.

By contrast, here’s how it works for men:

Having kids at any age: congrats on your fertility! Clearly, your decision to embrace fatherhood, whatever your personal circumstances, is a profound demonstration of your maturity, sensitivity and acceptance of family values. Should you go the extra step of taking paternity leave, doing any traditionally female-oriented babytasks (such as, for instance, all of them) and otherwise acting like a Sensitive New-Age Guy, please present your fatherhood card at Subway, where you will be given All The Cookies as a reward. (Always bearing in mind that adopting a traditionally masculine, pater familias role will be lauded, too. It’s cool, dude: whatever works for you. We’re flexible!) If, on the other hand, you didn’t want to have kids, but the mother forced you into it somehow, please accept all our sympathies! We’ll be right there to back you up with lots of eyerolling about women, ball-and-chain jokes, and low expectations for paternal involvement generally.

Not wanting kids at any age: well, duh. You’re a guy. Why would you?

Which doesn’t even touch on the absolutely explosive bullshit faced by anyone who isn’t cisgendered, straight, financially secure and/or married/engaged, let alone the specifically poisonous and deeply racist stereotypes surrounding POC parents, with special emphasis on single black mothers. Or the related, extraneous clusterfuck of arguments surrounding abortion. Or adoption, for that matter. Or international adoption. Or interracial adoption. Or the foster system. Or pretty much any mechanism whatever through which parenting either occurs or is controlled.

Conclusion: there isn’t enough headdesk, tableflip and facepalm in the world to adequately convey how fucked-up our views on the various intersections between parenting, gender, race, class and sexuality really are, and coincidentally, this is why we can’t have nice things.

Steven Moffat is a Douchebag - The Masterlist

"There’s this issue you’re not allowed to discuss: that women are needy. Men can go for longer, more happily, without women. That’s the truth. We don’t, as little boys, play at being married - we try to avoid it for as long as possible. Meanwhile women are out there hunting for husbands."

"Well, the world is vastly counted in favour of men at every level - except if you live in a civilised country and you’re sort of educated and middle-class, because then you’re almost certainly junior in your relationship and in a state of permanent, crippled apology. Your preferences are routinely mocked. There’s a huge, unfortunate lack of respect for anything male." — Steven Moffat, Scotsman Interview 06-06-04

Russell was explaining the idea of ‘Mary-Sues’ to Jeanette, who’d never heard of them. It was all about how people are being put off from writing before they even start by online bullying in writing forums. People – women, mostly – were being accused of creating ‘Mary-Sue’ characters. ‘It’s a pejorative term, apparently. For when people use a version of themselves in the fiction. And they’re being told they shouldn’t be using them in their stories. […] But you can’t win. These women who were being put off from entering this writing competition, or posting their fiction online, they were being told that – even if you made your character quite unlike yourself – you could be a Victorian nun with a limp – it’s still you, in disguise. They’re being told: it’s still all about you!’Russell T. Davies on ‘Mary Sues’

We teach girls shame. Close your legs, cover yourself, we make them feel as though being born female they’re already guilty of something. And so, girls grow up to be women who cannot say they have desire. They grow up to be women who silence themselves. They grow up to be women who cannot say what they truly think. And they grow up—and this is the worst thing we do to girls—they grow up to be women who have turned pretense into an art form. — Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie
