"I'm not really afraid to be my awkward self, and I know there's lots and lots of other people just like me out there that are awkward themselves. And I think they just appreciate that I'm not afraid to say the weird things that I say and tweet the obnoxious things that I tweet. But I've tried being other people and myself suits me the best. I think you just be honest. I think people respond to honesty." - Chris Colfer
When people think of a writer, they see an experienced man or woman with worldly wisdom, serenely typing away on a typewriter or a computer and producing a hundred-thousand word novel every year, lining their pockets with royalties and their cut of the merchandise profits and film rights.
They think of Tolkien, Dickens, Shakespeare, Austen. Of Harry Potter, Percy Jackson, The Hunger Games, the great books of our generation.
But a writer does not need to be famous or rich or experienced. A writer only needs to enjoy their craft and find pleasure in lending their own shine to a character.
A writer can be a sixteen year old Scottish girl who wakes up at six am every day to turn on the computer and read homoerotic fanfiction. A girl who does fuck all with her life except sit for hours on end reading incredible stories and typing absolute shit that occasionally seems to welcome a good response. A girl whose new reputation within school is based entirely on the discovery of so-called 'metaphorical porn' in her fanfiction notebook. A girl who gets insanely hyper off Irn Bru and Haribos and frequently yells about her enormous crush on Chris Colfer. A girl who gets wound up at sexism or homophobia and will gladly argue for hours on the legalisation of gay marriage.
Just a girl who loves the internet because she learnt that there are people out there even less sane than she.
My name is Beth. I'm sixteen years old. I live in Scotland. I'm a strident feminist and a supporter of gay rights and marriage equality.
I am a writer.
