I'm an old fart who prefers H/Hr Harry Potter stories, though I have been known to read others as well. As for what constitutes a good story, the following profiles say it better than I can:
My all time top ten stories, in no particular order:
A Black Comedy by nonjon
Purile at times? Yeah. Completely brilliant always? Yeah. The funniest story I've seen.
Hermione Granger and the Goblet of Fire by Coulsdon Eagle
Probably the perfect story if you like Hermione. And even if you don't. She is not sugar coated here at all. Don't be put off by the somewhat slow setup in the first few chapters, this has the best TriWiz Tournament I have seen in fanfiction.
HP and the Lost Demon by Angry Hermione
A little crass at times, but a well crafted story. Necromancer Hermione, and an original take on a potion princess Ginny.
Wizards Fall by Bobmin356
The ultimate Dumbledore hater's story. All of Bobmin's stories are worthwhile, though I found Sunrise to be a slog.
A Marauders Plan by CatsAreCool
This story has amazing attention to details of character and motivation.
Restoring Hope by alchymie
Fun, beautifully told story with a sad premise. Perfectly constructed in less than 100K words. And that rarest of constructs: a believable good Ron too. Paracelsus/Alchymie's Coming Back Late is a jewell too.
The Little Veela that Could by Darth Drafter
It may be a little odd at times, but I loved every word of it. What other HP story has St. Joan of Arc as a main character?
Backwards Compatible by Russbyte
The ultimate Harry goes back in time and kicks ass story. The prototype of a common trope. Abandoned, but what a magnificent torso!
The Meaning of Father by The Obsidian Warlock
Amazing writing. This and the author's More Equal Then You Know really need completion. There really isn't anything else like them.
The Last Casualties by muggledad
All of muggledad's stories are good. This one will be even more amazing when done.
