Author has written 9 stories for Legend of Zelda, and Super Smash Brothers.

Hi, Thanks for viewing my profile!
About me
Real Name: Rob, but you can call me Gargravarr, Garg or just G - not fussed at all!
A.K.A: Gargravarr2112 (when someone's beaten me to Gargravarr!) on deviantArt and YouTube, The Hero of Literature (kidding!), Wielder of the Master Pen (kidding again, see below!), the Irritating Guy who Writes Nothing But Cliffhangers (okay, I admit, that's me!)
Gender: Male
Age: 23 (old enough to know my way around teh internetz!)
Occupation: Computer Science graduate, database developer, training to be a teacher
Where I live: England, UK
Religious views: Existentialist but agnostic (i.e. Life is what you make of it, but open to other ideas)
Likes: technology, writing, games, reading, music, guitars, travelling, rock-climbing, Apple products, Linux
Dislikes: C programming, art, Microsoft, office work
My Fanfiction Status: Slow progress. Regaining my muse though

Backstory: In my spare time, between killing my brain with internet addiction or TV, I've written several sci-fi novels, exploring the possibility of throwing humanity, not much more advanced than we are now, deep into space. My style has developed considerably since I wrote my first novel at 12 (might be younger, actually). I like getting inside the minds of my characters, seeing their personalities evolve and seeing what drives them. My ideas come to me at strange times (often while at work) and I write down what I can, then if it shows potential, I incorporate it. I'm the sort of person who obsesses very easily; once I get grabbed by something, I learn as much as I can about it. Legend of Zelda is my current obsession; Rush was my previous :) I also have amazing focus when I'm doing something I like. I hate leaving tasks incomplete; once I start something, I finish it. I play electric guitar and keyboard as passtimes, and I actually love my Ibanez S470 superstrat guitar, because I worked my ass off over Christmas in 2008 to buy it. I'm considering learning bass, too. Guitar, I find, is incredibly relaxing, especially playing riffs by Alex Lifeson. I'm not very good, best I can play is Limelight with a sloppy solo, but I enjoy it.

Why I started writing Fanfic: Heroes of Time came about (unsurprisingly) after I played Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess. The depth and complexity of the story just grabbed me, and I found the ending really heartbreaking. So, a few weeks after I finished the game, I let my mind wander at work and came up with a few elements of what soon became Heroes, starting with the epic reunion scene. I worked out an overarching plot and soon Heroes took shape. I find writing is really relaxing. The keyboard on my laptop is so nice to type on; I once wrote two 4,000-word updates to Heroes in one day!
I am incredibly non-linear in anything I write; my ideas come at strange times and are usually strange in themselves. Often I'll be thinking of the next part to the story and get an idea that won't be needed for weeks, start writing it down and suddenly, wham, there's chapter 15 when I'm on chapter 9! My sci-fi novel, StarFlight, is a mess of misplaced parts that need thorough re-organisation and then completion! I'm considering posting on FictionPress, where I have an account of the same name.
Writing process: Inspiration - Several cups of strong tea - Several hours of high-speed typing on my laptop - Hour or so of proof-reading from several perspectives - Post

Themes that interest me: One of the major themes I tried in Heroes is spirituality, understanding who we are and why. It's even harder than it sounds, I found, and I hope I managed to convey the underlying points I was trying to make. Purpose is another big one; what is the purpose of our lives? No answer is right or wrong, and it's a very hard question to address. Some of my ideas are in Heroes and NHE. I think my style lends itself quite well to romance, and connections between people in general, exploring how and why other people are important to us. I didn't understand angst when I started Heroes (or at least, when referred to by that name), but have built up an understanding of it recently. Tragedy isn't something I usually like, but when I sat down and wrote NHE, I couldn't believe what I ended up writing; without trying to sound like I'm inflating my own ego, it's dark and powerful stuff, and it surprised me when I read through my own writing. And of course, you can't write a Legend of Zelda fic without action/adventure, which Heroes has a fair amount of! On a side note, I seem to be pretty good (or bad, depending on your stance!) with cliffhangers, as I already have several people wanting to kill me for adding them! You have been warned!

My style: Before I came here, I'd written almost everything in third-person, but I tried first-person for Heroes of Time and it worked fantastically, so I'm going to experiment with that more! Spelling and grammar are always top priority for me. I always have a set of rules that govern the world I set everything in, and I stick rigidly to them. I carefully pace my work, give lots of detail where I think it's appropriate and try to avoid any inconsistencies. I also drop a lot of my personal views and beliefs on certain matters into my works. I'm always looking to improve, so if you spot any mistakes, let me know. Also, I've never written romance before, so some scenes in Heroes may be a little 'rough around the edges.' Recently, I got the idea to write a oneshot tragedy which might just evolve into a full-blown AU-based tale of loss. A lot of my ideas are inspired by music; when I got into Rush in 2008, their lyrics and themes completely changed my outlook. I heartily recommend two of their most overlooked albums - Hold Your Fire (1987) and Power Windows (1985); both are heavy in synthesizers but the themes and lyrics are incredible.

Advice to New Starters: This is only half-related to people who've said they've been inspired to write their own work after reading some of mine :) The most critical advise I can give is to back up your work!! I've read so many fanfics where the author has apologised for delays, and has blamed their computer dying on them or similar. Seriously. Get a DropBox account, store all your written work in there. DropBox automatically syncs securely with a free storage account online whenever you change something. You can retrieve your documents from anywhere with an internet connection, whether your computer is alive or not. I don't mean to preach, but it's a simple approach to an annoyingly common problem. Never keep single copies of anything that cannot be replaced. Make backups! Alternatively, get a Mac, they don't break ;)
For those interested, you can get extra space from Dropbox by using this link: http colon slash slash db dot tt slash xqZXkbb (you'll have to assemble this yourself since FFN doesn't permit external links) - this'll give you an extra 500MB of space in Dropbox when you sign up, since I've referred you. The free account starts at 2GB and you can expand this by referring more people.

My fanfics: I am working on two fanfics here, a second on DeviantArt, have one on indefinite hiatus and have three complete. WARNING: All contain spoilers! And just to be sure, I do not own the series in which these are based.
Status messages: Any critical information on my work ends up in the summary box. Key:
Cn - Chapter number n, the chapter affected.
UD - Updated; minor corrections through to moderate restructuring, not seriously affecting story. Probably reads better, so worth a second look.
RW - Rewrite; significant restructuring that will affect the plot, usually means offending chapter has been taken down and will be reposted. Will require reading before next chapter.
IP - In Progress
OH - On Hold; temporary pause up to a few weeks whilst I either update or rewrite, or just to gather ideas. Will be continued.
IH - Indefinite Hiatus; no ideas at the moment, so will not be continued in the foreseeable future, though I still want to finish it.
AB - Abandoned; no intention of continuing, if you like the story and want to continue it yourself, drop me a line!

/*Overall status: Active but slow. Scars: IP. Light: OH. Nine Lives: OH */

The Legend of Zelda: Main pairing - LinkxMidna

-'The Legend of Link: Heroes of Time' ('Heroes') is my main work and I was once able to update it surprisingly regularly, however I am glad it is now complete! It's a post-LoZ:TP fic following Link as he tries to find purpose in his life after the incredible adventure TP was and its heartbreaking conclusion. On his spiritual journey, he faces crises of identity and purpose and must confront his feelings for Midna. And to top it all, there may be a way to right the wrongs of so long ago and defeat darkness once and for all. I loved writing this story as I tried to really nail Link's feelings. Rated T for violence. Fits into spiritual, romance, action/adventure, angst and occasional hurt/comfort. Status: Complete

-'The Legend of Link: The Scars of Time' - This is the direct sequel to Heroes. Without giving away too much just yet, I will summarise it thus: In a world long since changed by the passage of time rises a dark power, something that has long slumbered now awakening. Facing the new power are three Guardians, bound to serve the Goddesses and protect the Golden Power, and when their charge is stolen from them, they are sent forth into a world so different from the one they once knew that the biggest mystery will be working out what to save it from. Status: In Progress - I'm redrafting the plot and somewhat changing the direction of the fic, but it's really complicated and is taking a long time

-'The Legend of Link: The Hero of Light' - This is the final part of my 'Legend of Link' trilogy, and is the prequel to Heroes - this means it's actually my attempt at novelising the game. I was unsure about doing such a thing, since the story's already been told, but I decided to try and work my own spin into the characters, as I did with Heroes - try and pick out ideas and characterisations I thought up in Heroes within the game itself and apply my first-person perspective to them. Honestly, I liked how I started it, but it's tricky to write - I want to stay close to the game, but obviously there's no point in following everything frame for frame. At the same time, my interpretations have to work. Status: On Hold - I began work on this story as a way to reconnect with how I wrote Heroes, to try and find some motivation to continue Scars. I'm getting back to how I was now, so priority for this story has dropped a little.

-'No Happy Ending' is a post-LoZ:TP oneshot branching off Heroes I wrote in one of the little 'emo-moments' I seem to have a lot of recently. It's a dark tale of a broken Hero who has lost everything - having given up everything to save Hyrule, he realises he can't save himself from his own emptiness, and chooses to end it all. I'm not sure why I wrote this one, but I've reflected a lot on life and death recently. I'm not suicidal, despite how it might read. On the contrary, I never want to die, but have become aware of my own mortality, which is probably where this stems from. Also, I do not under any circumstances endorse suicide. People who are suicidal need to seek help. Sadly for this story, there wasn't any; it's really about understanding why someone would do such a thing. Rated M for suicide/character death. Its sequel is below. Status: Complete/Oneshot

-'No More Heroes' occurs after the above; I think there's great potential in this story, though it is darker than most. After what happened in NHE, with so many left reeling from the events, Zelda is determined that no-one will ever again rise alone to save Hyrule, only to lose everything once more. Little does she know that the Triforce of Courage has other ideas - it has selected a new bearer who must now come to terms with the curse it brings with it. Dark, tragic tale of life, loss and purpose. Written in third-person for several reasons; new Hero, lots of required detail and just generally easier for me. Not my priority at the moment; written mostly when I'm depressed. However, if someone wants to help me write it, I'm more than willing to listen to ideas, so drop me a line - it's not going anywhere fast for now! Rated T for tragic/depressive themes. Status: Indefinite Hiatus - I really don't know where it's going.

Super Smash Brothers: Main pairing - LinkxPit

-'Fly Away Home' is my first Super Smash Brothers fic. I've wanted to write one for a while, given the immense arsenal of characters to choose from. This story is going to take a slow pace (bar actual Brawls of course) and examine what it means to be the outsider, the value of a friend, confusion of sexuality and love. I've moved it to my dA account so that people don't get innundated with my poor writing and perpetual revisions, but in the process I've managed to rework it almost completely - it's now an out-and-out yaoi LinkxPit fic (my second-fave pairing), and hopefully it'll give me a way to word my feelings on a few things I've accepted recently. The story now flows: Right at the start of the Brawl Tournament, mysterious newcomer Pit is injured in qualifying. Taken in by reincarnated champion swordsman Link, Pit seeks a second chance in order to prove his abilities, perhaps only to himself, and in the process discovers a love more powerful than anything he thought possible. Status: On Hiatus - It needs to be thoroughly redrafted.

-'Target Practise' is... okay, let's not beat around the bush, it's a yaoi lemon, I'll put my hands up and admit it. A few of you will doubtless be wondering why in the name of every three-letter-abbreviation you can think of, I'd have written this. All I can say is, I enjoyed writing it and I really hope nobody clicked on it who didn't like it - if you did I apologise, but you were warned. It forms part of my story Fly Away Home on deviantArt; I like to think it's an optional part of the story, showing the degree to which Link and Pit love each other. Status: Complete/Oneshot

-'I Want You' is another LinkxPit lemon, fleshing out their relationship and the depths of their love. I got inspired to write it a while back, and have been wondering when I should upload it, if at all, but a beta-reading came back very positive so I guess, based on the positive reviews I got for Target Practise, I shouldn't worry about it. It goes without saying, if you're not into this sort of thing, please don't read it! However, I'm pleased I didn't get any flame reviews for TP, so I hope the trend continues! Status: Complete/Oneshot

-'Twenty/Twenty Vision' is yet another NC17-rated dose of LinkxPit. It evolved from an MSN convo and turned into a bit of loving fun between the characters, and I *love* portraying the 'sweet, innocent, uke-y little angel' as seme :D Lemons have proven very fun to write and have been enjoyed, but I'm going to hold fire to write some more serious stuff... he says, then decides to write the story listed below... Status: Complete/Oneshot

-'Nine Lives' is my first proper collaboration, between myself and lemon legend Dayraider, and yes, it's yaoi, featuring our mutual favourite couple Link and Pit. Picture the pair in a happy relationship, on a romantic getaway... then picture Link walking straight into a curse that turns him half-cat! With no shortage of side-effects, what effects will this have on Link as a person, and on his relationships? Moreover, even if he can be cured, would he actually want to? Warnings: lemons galore, plenty of sexual references, cursing, moderate violence. Status: On Hold - this was never a serious story, and Day and I have moved onto writing things we find more mature. We will finish it eventually, but its priority has dropped.

"There is a theory that states, if the universe were ever truly understood, it would immediately cease to exist and be replaced by something even more mind-boggling.
There is another theory that states this has already happened." - Douglas Adams. So, so possible - how would we know?

"This must be a Thursday. I never could get the hang of Thursdays..." Arthur Dent, Hitchhiker's Guide

"There is no spoon." Neo, the Matrix

"The difficult, he does right away. The impossible? Give him a minute!" Zelda on Link.
'Okay, get me a cup, I'm going to melt!' Midna's thoughts on Link's smile XD
"The best person for the job is someone who doesn't want it." Judge Ralthas
"It's not your fault." Midna to Link - that scene was heartbreaking :'(
-All from 'The Silent Kingdom' by Freedan the Eternal - EPIC fic! One I would REALLY recommend reading if you like post-TP fics

"I just don't know where we are. There's no two ways about it: I flamingo'd up!"
"What do you mean?"
"It's like a cock-up, only much, much bigger."
-Holly and Rimmer, Red Dwarf

"You can't judge a book by its cover."
"And you can't confuse Rimmer with a book. For a start, a book's got a spine."
-Ace and Lister, Red Dwarf

"I hate being cheered up. It's… depressing."
"So, in that case… we're all going to die horrible, painful, lingering deaths."
-Sheridan and Ivanova, Babylon 5

"Only an idiot fights a war on two fronts. Only the heir to the throne of the kingdom of idiots would fight a war on twelve fronts."
-Londo Mollari, Babylon 5

"Because if you don't {tell me what I want to know}, then in five minutes, I will be the only person at this table still standing. Five minutes after that, I'll be the only person in this room still standing."
(Scene break lasting approximately ten minutes, resume with all concerned having been beaten senseless by Marcus)
"Bugger! Now I have to wait for someone to wake up!"
-Marcus Cole, Babylon 5

""The molecules of your body are the same molecules that make up this station, and the nebula outside, that burn inside the stars themselves. We are starstuff. We are the universe made manifest, trying to figure itself out. And as we have both learned, sometimes the universe requires a change of perspective."
-Delenn, Babylon 5

"You cannot make history. You can only hope to survive it."
-G'Kar, Babylon 5

"We are all born as molecules in the hearts of a billion stars. Molecules that do not understand politics or policies or differences. Over a billion years, we foolish molecules forget who we are and where we came from. In desperate acts of ego, we give ourselves names, fight over lines on maps, and pretend that our light is better than everyone else's."-Delenn, Babylon 5

"I used to think that it was awful that life was so unfair. Then I thought, wouldn't it be much worse if life were fair, and all the terrible things that happen to us come because we actually deserve them? So, now I take great comfort in the general hostility and unfairness of the universe."
-Marcus Cole, Babylon 5

And now, some ego-stroking:
"You are a Hero of Literature. If "the pen is mightier than the sword," then you don't just wield the pen of courage. You wield the Master Pen."
-Review I received from 'Malon' for Heroes of Time XD Thank you, you rock!

See ya around!
