If you're still here, I'll say some things about myself, perhaps occasionally I will add a rant or a raving or a tangent in here for you to peruse and judge at your leisure.
I do not have a life of awful experiences to draw from to give depth to my writing, nor many people whose memory and presence weighs upon my mind so that I can create characters in their likeness. All I have is a whimsical muse that often lies in a deep sleep, but when she awakens, she brings the sun out. I'm definitely not the best writer I know, and I'm not really specialized to be good at anything. I love to learn and I certainly have a deep base of knowledge to draw from, but knowledge without context is meaningless, so I would never call myself "wise" or "smart". I don't think it's a good idea to ever believe that, because that comes with an arrogance that is very tough to let go of.
I do not want to begrudge anyone who wishes to make a living off of their writing. I even think that having “a place to donate money to” or taking commissions on their own is not a bad thing. However, I have seen more than a few authors demand a certain number of reviews or, worse, require a certain amount of money on “that place where you donate money” before they update their fanfiction. Fanfiction is already in a fairly gray legal area (though the legal teams of AO3 have been helpful to make it better). Stunts like the latter do not help the case of fanwork being fanwork. And beyond the legality of it… you’re really going to hurt your readers like that? Demarcate them into a hierarchy of classes between paying readers and non-paying readers? I don’t think that’s right. My readers are my readers. All of you have an right to read what I write. If, and this ‘if’ is a few yoctometers away from ’never gonna happen’, I ever do monetize my writings, I would never lock it behind a paywall in any capacity. Feel free to screenshot this and hold me accountable to that.
Originality is not a quality that I care about much in my work. I do not intentionally plagiarize any other piece. I reference and use the ideas of others as a basis for my writing, knowing that what I do is just looking at certain ideas from a different angle or in a different light. But I do not believe originality is something to concern myself with. Ecclesiastes 1:9 is a very freeing idea: "There is nothing new under the sun." It doesn't matter if you're not coming up with incredible out-of-the-box ideas, because those aren't enough to connect with people. People connect with familiarity, and with humanity. My work isn't original, it's personal. I put a piece of my soul in everything I write, even the crack chapters that seem built solely for comedy or absurdity. All I care about is whether you can feel that, connect with that, and maybe even understand something in your own life a little better because of that.
