Good fanfiction - if it is truly good - gives an author a true exercise. The critics will say "How cheap! You can't bother to come up with creative characters on your own, so you use creations belonging to other." Oh, no. I say in response to that, "Which is harder, writing a character where you are the infinite creator; how they think, act, look, speak, no rules, no pre-set conditions, where you may run free with whatever whim pops into your mind -or - weaving a tale of a soul, already in existence, where you can not make up who they are, only how they would act in the situation you now are placing them in; where you must write words THEY would say, actions THEY would take, thoughts THEY would think - not what YOU wish them to think, but something that would fit into the rules and guidelines already lined down for that characters identity." It teaches us to write plausibly. It teaches us that perhaps, maybe not all of our creations should be mere mimics of what we say and think and feel, but souls unto themselves, even if they only exist on paper.
