My opinion of the most important rule in writing? "Show, Don't Tell."

Pet peeves: 1) 'Lightening' means to make lighter; 'lightning' is that electricity show in the sky during storms.
2) A ruler 'reigns'. For any other use, it's 'reins', as in the piece of equipment used with horses. To 'rein someone in' is an expression based on the action of tugging on the reins to tell a horse to stop.
3) 'Phial' and 'vial' are the glass tubes used in chemistry (and potions) - the first is the British spelling, the second is the US spelling. 'Vile' is something disgusting - it's also an anagram of 'evil', which can serve as a mnemonic.
Please don't confuse the above terms. Thank you.
