My opinion of the most important rule in writing? "Show, Don't Tell."

Pet peeves: 1) 'Lightening' means to make lighter; 'lightning' is that electricity show in the sky during storms.

2) A ruler 'reigns'. For any other use, it's 'reins', as in the piece of equipment used with horses. To 'rein someone in' is an expression based on the action of tugging on the reins to tell a horse to stop. To 'give free rein' is based on the action of letting the horse choose its own way, not directing it with the reins.

3) 'Phial' and 'vial' are the glass tubes used in chemistry (and potions) - the first is the British spelling, the second is the US spelling. 'Vile' is something disgusting - it's also an anagram of 'evil', which can serve as a mnemonic.
