These are memories I tie in place, tightly, with brightly coloured scarves. When you were small, you wanted help with your snowsuit, boots and buckles proving too difficult for your tiny hands. Mitts after zippers, I would say, and you would turn to me with your toothless smile, holding out your scarf like a prize that you found in the snow. Like a story waiting that can't wait for spring, and so you have grabbed it, squirming and by the tail, before it is ready to wake up from its deep, dark hibernation. But we can gather here, together, underneath the light of the winter stars, and warm ourselves by the campfire; with words, and brightly woven sparks that leap from large wooden logs, dancing into our hearts and minds. Until there is no more use for words, only the convictions of our late night conversation.
