Author has written 2 stories for Harry Potter, and Naruto.
So, a little bit about me:
I have started writing a new story called a Change in Plans. Basically, its a different take on Voldemort's first rise. It seems that he hated Muggles more than anything else, so why not attack them, rather that the wizarding world. Very AU. Read it!
Cliches that are the downfall of Harry Potter fanfics:
Stories where Harry gets sent to Azkaban by his friends are horrendous. The personalities and action of his friends and teachers are wildly, disproportionately bad. Do try and re-read the series without the bias you pic up from terrible fanfiction on this website.
If Harry gets a letter from a dead Sirius over the summer, travels to Gringotts, befriends the Goblins, gets emancipated, gains assess to the Black family vaults, and decided to train super hard over the summer to defeat Voldemort. It's 2017. You absolutely do not have a creative new spin to put on that story
And of course Harry is able to find a book in Knockturn alley, and learn some powerful magics that no one else knows about. And then he uses those magics to outsmart Dumbledore and defeat Voldemort. After all, there surely isn't a chance that Dumbledore ever ventured into that part of the alley. There's certainly no way that Dumbledore, with his minor experience of successfully fighting two Dark Lords, would know anything about dark, powerful, or unusual magic.
Stories where Dumbledore, Headmaster of one of the biggest schools in Europe, influential politician at both a national and international level, and renown magical researcher and fighter, is outsmarted and out-manipulated by a teenager that's been in the Wizarding World for a couple of years.
Stories where Harry refuses to kill Death Eaters because doing so is "evil" and will make him as bad as them.
Using the moniker "Ice Queen" to refer to a Slytherin girl like Daphne Greengrass. Try and be original. It is very easy to depict a character as cold and distant without using the phrase "Ice Queen"
Making Occlulmency all about "building mindscapes" and "building a wall". The entire point of the mind art is that the magics surrounding them are difficult because the mind is a complex thing. It can't be define by a "mindscape" or read like a book. The entire point of occlumency is to make sure that the person using Legilimency doesn't know that you are an Occlumens. Don't dilute the Mind Arts to something so mundane as building a shield for your mind. It's not accurate, it mostly useless, since occlumency is about misdirection, and most importantly, its been done before. Be original.
Anything where Harry is "rational" or "logical", since these stories overwhelmingly have a tendency of twisting the canon characterization of Ron, Dumbledore, Hermione, and Snape, just to fit the narrative of "Harry is smart, everyone else is a moron"
Types of fan fiction I like:
Crossovers with Dresden Files, Star Wars, Naruto, DC or Marvel, Lord of the Rings
Stories where he is powerful, but he had to train hard for his skills.
Stories where he attends a school other than Hogwarts.
Stories where he discovers magic before Hogwarts and break the "laws" of magic.
Dark!Harry, but doesn't have to join Voldemort or be evil.
Any story that explores the Deathly Hallows or the Veil
Stories where is travels the world or apprentices with someones - Make a Wish by Rorschach's Blot
Any stories where Harry is immortal and set in the future (hundreds of years)
Stories where Harry becomes Headmaster or is an unspeakable
Stories where he leaves Earth - i.e) the stories by Ynyr
