Author has written 2 stories for Harry Potter, and Naruto.
So, a little bit about me:
I have started writing a new story called a Change in Plans. Basically, its a different take on Voldemort's first rise. It seems that he hated Muggles more than anything else, so why not attack them, rather that the wizarding world. Very AU. Read it!
Cliches that are the downfall of Harry Potter fanfics:
Harry is sent to Azkaban because all his friends betrayed him because, clearly, they are all after his money and fame. Nope. The British Wizarding Society is not that corrupt and it is incredibly unlikely that ALL of his friends would do this.
Harry gets a letter from Sirius AFTER he dies, goes to Gringotts, gets a ton of Vaults and becomes more powerful than Voldemort over the summer. Try to be original people. Oh and along the way, he suddenly becomes BFFs with the goblins because he is polite and respectful to them. God forbid the goblins just dislike Wizards for defeating them in every war. Because everyone knows that deeply rooted hatred between two societies can be easily overcome by a boy being nice. Sigh...
And of course Harry is able to find a book in Knockturn alley, and learn some powerful magics that no one else knows about. And then he uses those magics to outsmart Dumbledore and defeat Voldemort. Because in the decades that Dumbledore and Voldemort have spent learning magic, they haven't come across anything like that. Right...
Stories were Dumbledore is manipulative, but somehow also completely incompetent and can be outsmarted by a teenager. Really? His age, if anything will translate into experience. The guy has been a Headmaster and politician, and the leader of 2 governing bodies, for decades. So, he has over 100 years of experience, knowledge and skill to draw on. Harry isn't even out of school. It is entirely unrealistic for him to beat Dumbledore.
Stories where he is the heir to all the founders and Merlin. Why? What's the point? He is a Potter. Additionally, he should not have access to ANY vaults but his own. Not Gryffindor or Slytherin, or Merlin or Morgana or some random ancient but apparently powerful family that no one knows about.
Also, don't make Harry rich. He never needed anything in canon, and making him rich simply decreases the effort he needs to put into doing something. Its' cliched and just kind of pointless.
Stories where is he is abused/beaten/raped by his uncle. Nope. As canon shows, he is at least neglected and at most smacked around by Dudley and received a few broken bones as a result. That's bullying, not child abuse. He was not whipped, or tortured, or raped.
Stories where Harry refuses to kill Death Eaters because doing so is "evil" and will make him as bad as them.
Using the moniker "Ice Queen" to refer to a Slytherin girl like Daphne Greengrass. Try and be original. It is very easy to depict a character as cold and distant without using the phrase "Ice Queen"
Making Occlulmency all about "building mindscapes" and "building a wall". The entire point of the mind art is that the magics surrounding them are difficult because the mind is a complex thing. It can't be define by a "mindscape" or read like a book. The entire point of occlumency is to make sure that the person using Legilimency doesn't know that you are an Occlumens. Don't dilute the Mind Arts to something so mundane as building a shield for your mind. It's not accurate, it mostly useless, since occlumency is about misdirection, and most importantly, its been done before. Be original.
Types of fan fiction I like:
Crossovers with Dresden Files/Star Wars/Naruto/DC or Marvel Universes/Lord of the Rings/Supernatural
Stories where he is powerful, but he had to train hard for his skills.
Stories where he attends a school other than Hogwarts.
Stories where he discovers magic before Hogwarts and break the "laws" of magic.
Dark!Harry, but doesn't have to join Voldemort or be evil.
Any story that explores the Deathly Hallows or the Veil
Stories where is travels the world or apprentices with someones - Make a Wish by Rorschach's Blot
Any stories where Harry is immortal and set in the future (hundreds of years)
Stories where Harry becomes Headmaster or is an unspeakable
Stories where he leaves Earth - i.e) the stories by Ynyr
