Poll: I generally do not control how my characters speak, but what do you prefer reading on the dialog-description continuum? Vote Now!
Author has written 13 stories for Bourne series, Star Trek: 2009, Lord of the Rings, Castle, Centurion, Primeval, Merlin, and Chronicles of Narnia.
I'm not really a writer, more of a reader, and pretty much just a reader of *Romances* at that. However, I write down some of my fantasies so they won't circle in my head ad nauseum. As an engineering project manager working on my marketing skills, I am trying to learn to let my characters speak in their own voices and reveal their motivations. Please give me any feedback you can.
Here is a list of my favorite pairings, more or less in order of attraction: Eomer/Lothiriel (Lord of the Rings), Arthur/Guinevere (Merlin BBC), John/Margaret (North&South), Matt/Emily (Primeval), Kirk/Mccoy & Uhura/Spock & Chekov/anyone (Star Trek 2009), John Blake/anyone & Bruce/Selina (The Dark Knight Rises), Katniss/Peeta (The Hunger Games), Loki/Sif (Thor), Guy/Marian (Robin Hood BBC), Mai/Zuko (Avatar: the Last Airbender), Maddy/Reynolds (Terra Nova), Jo/Zane (Eureka), non-Rand Two Rivers canon pairings (Wheel of Time), canon pairings & Rayne (Firefly/Serenity), Sam/Rosie (Lord of the Rings), Lanie/Esposito (Castle, and would someone *please* write something about Agent Fallon and/or Selena Kyle... Serena Kaye from that universe), Jason/Nicky (from the Bourne movies, because Marie/Jason from the books is the awesomest partnership ever), Kat/Nate (The Witch of Blackbird Pond), Sorsha/Madmartigan (Willow -- can't find any so far), Norrington/Anamarie (Pirates of the Caribbean), Neytiri/Jake (Avatar), Michael/Fiona (Burn Notice), Tristan/anyone (King Arthur).
From said list, a few patterns emerge. Karl Urban and Zoe Saldana are hot! And Bradley James (King Arthur from Merlin BBC) is my new go-to-the-goddam-gym inspiration! I am also pretty obsessed with Richard Armitage (Thorin!) from "North & South." The healer(doctor) and the warrior(cop) are a happy pairing or maybe fighter/sorceress (protector/knower). Which does make me fantasize about a few other random couples: Kirill/Nicky (Bourne movies -- I love Julia Stiles), Sulu/Chapel (Star Trek 2009), Frank/Lai (The Transporter), Evelyn/Michael (Salt -- Angelina Jolie is one of those people I can't tear my eyes from), Eldest Princess/Soldier (Twelve Dancing Princesses), Murphy/Kincaid (Dresden Files). And yes, I know that last one is totally out of sync with the others.
I have been using the favorite stories as my storymarker, but if the story is complete, then it is there because I am planning on re-reading it (over and over and over again). This is quite like real life -- I generally only buy books if I am collecting them or supporting an author. If there are three or more stories by an author that I would favorite, then I just go ahead and favorite the author.
Also, a general apology to all my readers: apparently I'm a premise sort of gal rather than a conclusion sort of gal. So while I enjoy writing down my daydreams and will often outline whole adventures, it's not looking like I'm going to finish many (any) of them in the foreseeable future. At least now I've proved to myself that this whole writing thing is not a flash in the pan and I will continue to update any stories whose characters let me know what is going on.
