About Pyreflies Painter
Pyreflies Painter is currently a med student but has always been an avid writer. She first joined Fanfiction.Net back in 2011, and wrote fanfictions based on Cassandra Clare's The Mortal Instruments and The Infernal Devices. She was a big fan of Clare and her writing, and praised them as the best of YA fantasy fiction. She fell in love with Jace Wayland but ultimately sold her fangirling soul to William Herondale in the prequel series. Clare was her favourite author.
In 2012, passionate love turned to disappointment with the release of City of Fallen Angels. She also discovered Clare's history as a bully and the Plagiarism Debacle. Pyreflies Painter learned about the strong evidence supporting claims that Clare plagiarised her beloved world off Sherrilyn Kenyon's Dark Hunter series. This, combined with her growing distaste with the characters after City of Fallen Angels, resulted in Pyreflies Painter leaving Clare's books to gather dust in a lonely box within the shadows of her closet. (Pulvis et umbra sumus, indeed.)
The Infernal Devices and its characters were spared from this fate; they still stand on her bookshelf, and are sandwiched between Graceling and The Bane Chronicles. Pyreflies Painter also believes Will Herondale had a legitimate reason for being an atrocious human being, and knows a piece of her soul is still tied to his character for all eternity. Magnus Bane is also spared because 1) he is fabulous and brilliant and funny and powerful, and 2) he was instrumental in Will's happiness.
Her final fanfictions were about The Infernal Devices characters, BBC's Doctor Who and Sherlock. She was content to leave in 2012, knowing that her last few months on FF.net were devoted to characters she truly loved. Suffice to say, she never stopped writing fanfictions but just stopped publishing.
Until November 2016, when she crossed paths with Shadowhunters. The televised adaptation developed by Ed Decter and McG brought new life to The Mortal Instruments. She learned from fellow fans about how the show fixes the very many problematic aspects of the books. She felt vindicated after years of her teenage life being misled about the meaning of love and heroism. She was only thirteen/fourteen when she was exposed to the incestuous romance, the poor PoC and LGBT representation, the toxic and unhealthy relationships in the world, the girl-on-girl hate, the sexism, the racism, the terrible plot holes, and so many more.
And how this reflected her earliest fanfictions.
Pyreflies Painter is currently a med student and remains an avid writer. She returned to FF.net to shake off her demons; she deleted fanfictions which no longer conforms to her ideals, and to raise awareness regarding Clare's books and the author's behaviour. She does this in hopes that young adults will be informed and, consequently, warned.
The year is 2017. I left for the reasons listed above. But a final reason is the same one I wrote five years ago: it was time to put the pen down. I truly have finished my journey in FF.net. I have written other fanfictions but never published them. Only one other saw the light of day; it was a short story for the canon Holmes fandom, and was published in another platform under a different pen name.
I have deleted all fanfiction works of mine which were problematic. It was not a decision I made lightly; I poured hours of my free time into those fanfictions. I appreciated the support and the responses to keep writing. They helped shape my first writing years, and was nurtured in a loving and supportive environment.
But, alas, they must go. For example, MI and ID Facebook was enjoyable to so many- the amount of support it received up to 2016 surprised me -but it contained toxic male stereotypes, abusive romantic relationships, terrible tropes, and is an insult to the LGBT community. Reading back on how I made Gabriel's apparent "secret crush" on Will the butt of many jokes, how I reunited Maia with Jordan, how misogynistic Jace and Will were... It honestly makes me want to travel back in time and tell 17 year old me that 21 year old me is very disappointed with her.
I have yet to review my remaining fanfictions below for problematic content, particularly And All Hell Broke Loose. I'll return to fix them and delete if necessary.
In spite of recent events, I am still grateful for my time on FF.net. My heartfelt thanks still goes to the friends I have made: The Pale Red Queen, Kuronoko Tsubame and Behind the Screen. I haven't been able to keep in contact, but I'll remember you guys for being so supportive. I still treasure how this platform helped my confidence as a writer.
For writing is so dear to me.
