Since I don't have any stories up, I hope you like the favorites list I've built up in the past few years. To start off, there's one quote- not mine -that I really like.
"The First Law of Fanfiction states that every change which strengthens the protagonists requires a corresponding worsening of their challenges. Or in plainer language: You can't make Frodo a Jedi without giving Sauron the Death Star.Read any book on writing ever and it will tell you that stories are about conflict; a hero too strong for their conflict is no longer in tense, heart-pounding difficulty."
This was copy/pasted directly off of 'Less Wrong's' page and is an excellent way of putting it.
Now, there are currently several fandoms I like reading about. I like: Harry Potter, Percy Jackson and the Olympians, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Pokemon and a little Alagaesia mixed in. Not necessarily in that order, though.
First off, I usually like a small to moderate amount of romance with my fanfiction. I don't like the horribly fluffy crap that makes your eyes bleed, but I do like some. I also like unpopular or uncommon parings...usually. For HP it's usually Harry with a lesser known character you can make into your own, like Daphne Greengrass or Susan Bones. Or maybe Fleur. Or Luna or Padma. I do like Harry/Hermione. Not something ridiculous like Draco or Voldemort, I mean really? Draco is just a little asswipe and Voldemort killed his parents. Or, god forbid, Snape. nothing like a few insults and some mind rape to make me happy! (sarcasm doesn't come across well in writing, unfortunately) Is that a turn on for some people or something? I have nothing against gay people, but those pairings are stupid. Extremely stupid. Unless you rewrite the entire universe then it doesn't make sense. you don't suddenly decide you're gay. My stepbrother, who I've known for over seven years is gay. Since I've known him, it was blindingly obvious he was gay. He didn't just change his frakkin' mind in high school or something. *rolls eyes*
For BtVS it's usually Buffy/Xander or Xander/Willow. It could be because I'm simply a guy, but Xander is my favorite character. He's the normal one who tries his best to do what he can, while making mistakes and failing miserably sometimes. Anya was awesome, and if it wasn't canon I'd probably like her with Xander, but it is, and I don't. I don't know if it's just because it's canon, what most pairings I like and most I don't aren't canon and are, respectively. I like Buffy with Xander a lot because it means Buffy isn't with Spike or Riley, which makes me a little nauseous. I think my main reason for pairing Willow with Xander is because Willow is awesome, and is my favorite female character.
For Percy Jackson, my favorite pairing is, oddly enough, Percy/Artemis. Or Percy/Zoe. I have to say, despite the fact that I'm male and therefore am obligated to take offense to what Artemis says about men, she's my favorite Olympian. I'm not entirely sure why I like it so much, maybe just because it's something not a lot of people write or think about, but I do. There aren't a whole lot of Percy Jackson stories that are that good, though.
I read a LOT -
- Favorite books/series': Harry Potter, Percy Jackson, Eragon, Maximum Ride, the Golden Compass, The Hunger Games, The Morcyth Saga, The Restoration Series. Also, The Name of the Wind is really really good. Some of these are simply the titles of a book in the series because I can't remember the actual name. I could go on and on about books I like. Lol.
Don't really watch tv, but when I do, it's: Buffy, Doctor Who, Merlin, Firefly, Dollhouse (Joss Whedon, anyone?), Warehouse 13, Stargate, and a smattering of others.
Music. Ugh, so much to choose from.
I likey: The Used, Cosmic Gate, Red, 3 Doors Down, Three Days Grace, Green Day, Linkin Park, Redlight King, Angra, The Fray, Shinedown, Gotye, Brightwood, The White Stripes, Avenged Sevenfold, Marilyn Manson, 30 Seconds to Mars, Fuel, Violent Femmes, Anberlin, Rise Against, Panic! at the Disco, Ghosts of August, Hollywood Undead, Muse, Civil Twilight, The All-American Rejects, Keane, Howie Day, Imogen Heap, Taking Back Sunday, Paramore, Ashes of Soma, Awolnation, The Killers, Coldplay, Dirty Heads, Middle Class Rut, Evanescence...There are lots more, and they definitely aren't ranked in that order or anything, but that'sa nice chunk of my music.
Things That Annoy Me:
-When a really good story gets abandoned
-When I open up a new fic and the chapter looks of a decent length, and when I get halfway through I realize the author decided to list EVERY single person that reviewed his/her fic
-Chapters under 1 or 2k words
-When an author decides not to update until they get a certain amount of reviews
-I wouldn't call this an annoyance, but I like it when the chapter has a name, not just a "Chapter 1" or "Chapter 28" or whatever
-As with the above, not exactly an annoyance, but something that bothers me; When, after a while of building up a character, they make that character do something they would never do with no explanation whatsoever
-People that don't understand what a comma is used for
-People who decide not to check how story specific words like 'apparate', 'Death Eaters', or 'Hellmouth" are spelled
-People who confuse homonyms such as 'there' 'their' and 'they're', 'heir' and 'air', 'wary' and 'weary, or 'bare' and 'bear'
-When I open up a recently added chapter to a story and find that it's nothing but an author's note
Some of these I may choose to ignore if I find that I like that particular story, thought not all.
All time favorite Harry Potter fanfic: Knowledge is Power by Nkari127 (who didn't actually write it, despite it being on his story list). Despite the fact that it's been abandoned, what is actually written is an extremely good story. I just wish is was completed.
All time favorite Buffy tVS fanfic: The Pride of Sunnydale by The Saint of Killers. Well written, interesting story, in which Xander is not just the comic relief.
On another BtVS note, a story, while not on this site, is one of the BEST Buffy stories I've ever read, is "I Am What I Am" on tthfanfic. org.
If you like any of the above categories, I suggest you read the corresponding stories as they're all excellent...Anyways...
