Poll: What do you think of OCs in fanfics? Vote Now!
Author has written 79 stories for Professor Layton, Rhythm Thief, Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney, and Legend of Korra.
Hi, I'm The Mocking J (MJ for short!).
My favourite fandoms:
*ATLA/ LoK- Fave characters: The whole Gaang (Aang especially), Wan, Bolin. Fave nation: I reckon I'd be best suited to the Air Nomads, which is great as of Book 3.
*Pokemon- Currently playing Pokémon Omega Ruby./ Fave characters: Again, way too much choice... Probably say N and Wally and Steven from the games, Clemont and Looker and Emma from the anime, Green (boy) and Yellow from the Manga.
*Hunger Games (*Le gasp.* What a surprise!)- Fave characters: Rue :'(, Cinna, Finnick, Plutarch.
*Rhythm Thief- It has cutscenes. Me likie cutscenes. :D/ Fave characters: Charlie, Inspector Vergier. (These two... Its not even like they're on great terms for most of the Emperor's Treasure, but the moments where they do see eye to eye are just baaaaaaw. Charlie is an awesome, tenacious action kid and Vergier is her overprotective action dad!)
*Ib- Fave character: Garry. (He may have inspired an OC...)
*Corpse Party- (I have only seen THE GAME- not the anime- and that alone probably scarred me for life, though the feels were overwhelming.) Fave characters: Seiko, Yoshiki.
*Big Hero 6- Face characters: Baymax, Hiro, Tadashi
But my No.1 favourite fandom happens to be:
There's nothing I love more! I adore the characters, epic storylines, music, heartwrenching cutscenes, puzzles... You name it!
Fave characters: I guess Emmy Altava is my all time favourite female character, and Clive Dove is my favourite male character... but I think I like all of them. (Except Bill Hawks. And Third Eye Jakes- but a good story needs villains we love to hate, so they can be forgiven.)
My preferences on characters change depending on who I am writing/reading/watching/viewing fanart/fangirling about. So, I've decided to do a SPOTLIGHT CHARACTER PROFILE. I'll present to you which character I currently enjoy, and give reasons for why they're awesome (spoilers may be included). :D
Mulan from... well, Disney's Mulan
This happens to be one of my favourite Disney movies and naturally, Mulan is my favourite Disney princess. No, scratch that- Mulan is a fighter, a warrior, a HERO. However, she is also a dependable ally and a loving daughter. She's kind and tough. Sometimes lazy, but a brilliant strategist when the situation calls for it. She's pretty and she kicks ass at the same time. Not to harp on the earlier princesses, but they honestly weren't all that resilient. Which is understandable, considering the time period and their respectable roles in their own fairy tales. Did we expect the original Cinderella to punch her evil Step Mother in the mouth? Of course not! Cinderella is too good for that. Now, we can't forget Ariel and Belle, who came before Mulan. Ariel is full of passion, a real go-getter. Belle is a great role model; kind, intelligent and yet she would never hurt another person. However, some might argue that Belle is too perfect as she doesn't have a lot of human flaws. This has never been a problem for me. The problem I have is people claiming Frozen has the first developed female leads, and I LOVE the characters from Frozen!
Mulan is a strong female lead, while clearly having her flaws. She's late to meet the Matchmaker and she tries to cheat on a test by writing notes on her arm. When have you EVER seen that from a Disney princess?
And Mushu and Crickey? Best Disney sidekicks ever.
How do you feel about OCs in fanfics?
This isn't an attack on any OCs. Heck, we all love seeing our own creations- a little part of ourselves- joining our favourite fandoms.
But then... you have the dreaded Mary Sues, Gary Stus, shameless Reader Inserts and so forth. But even all of these aspects can be entertaining. Please don't let this harmless little poll incite any arguments.
Thank you for your helpful feedback on how I can improve on my writing. Its reassuring to hear that the majority just wanted me to keep doing my thing. But the second most voted options were- more length, bigger varieties of genres/pairings and faster updates. Sometimes when I have an idea for a oneshot, my motivation will fizzle out while I'm writing it, leaving it at 500- 700 words. Even for a oneshot, that isn't really acceptable, is it? I will try to write longer stories in future, though I can never predict when I'll encounter time constraints. Same with faster updates... As for more varieties of genres/pairings, I've recently written a Rhythm Thief fic and tried writing something for the 'supernatural' genre, which I've never done before. I TRIED, OK? I CAN'T HELP IT THAT I JUST WANT TO GUSH ABOUT LUKE/AURORA AND LEMMY AND MY OTHER OTPS.

Wait... wait- THE PL CHARACTER FILTER HAS BEEN UPDATED. YES MY WISHES HAVE BEEN ANSWERED.
The same should apply Inspector Vergier from Rhythm Thief who criminally still DOES NOT EXIST IN THE CHARACTER TAGS.

Name: Archibald "Archie" Pendrake
Home Town: London
Occupation: Aspiring artist/ Archaeology student
Appearance: Silver hair, light olive skin tone, dark eyes and fine-boned angular facial features.
Fave outfit: Black turtleneck sweater, grey jeans and black boots.
Personality: Archie appears to have a polite amiable manner to people he meets. He's quick to offer compliments and often praises others for their abilities and style, insisting that they should always pursue their talents. As an artist he is creative with a flair for painting and similar craftsmanship. At times you might find yourself falling asleep as he tends to drone on (a habit similar to his father) about fabulous art and frequently expresses his dream to become a renowned artist. He can be sappy and a bit of a pushover, as shown by his need to please his father. However, Archie can be stubborn when it comes to his detest of archaeology, to the point of distrusting archaeologists and artifacts in human hands.
Bio: During his school years, Archie's father (famous archaeologist Richard Pendrake) insisted that his son's dreams of becoming a painter were foolish ideas that would lead to a poor life with little income. The young man was unwillingly pushed into studying archaeology and more academic subjects. Archie had always hated his father's line of work. He believes that by investigating ancient ruins sites and relics, archaeologists disturb priceless treasures that should be left untouched. Artefacts have been stolen by archaeologists who take credit for finding them, when the credit should really go to their creators from years ago. Eventually Archie was forced to attend Gressenheller University where he studied archaeology under Professor Layton (this only increased his hatred of the subject).
Likes/ dislikes: Painting, drawing, studying art, observing magnificent views and landscapes, watching the sunrise, pizza/ Dislikes archaeology above all else and has a minor phobia of dirt and dust.
Ambitions: To become a famous artist.
Family: Father-- Richard Pendrake, famous archaeologist and admirer of Professor Layton. Mother-- Akemi Hirota, fashion designer. Several years after Archie was born she left Richard, claiming that he obsessed over his archaeology more than his own family.
Relation to Professor Layton: Student/ Companion
Puzzle pose: Thoughtfully-- "A puzzle isn't always what it seems first at first..."
Correct pose-- (Snaps fingers) "Marvellous! I've worked it out!"
Incorrect pose-- (Sighs) "I can't give up... Maybe I should look at this another way."
Some funs facts about Archie...
Fanart: As mentioned above, I can't draw, so here's some pictures of Archie from some very talented artists...

Name: Jun Duan (From Bonds Left Unbroken)
Home Town: For the last 5 years, a Targent training centre called The Roost, which is on an island near the coastal town of Rooston.
Occupation: Ex- Targent trainee
Appearance: Teenager: Scrawny and pale, with short black hair and sharp black eyes. Hidden on his arm is a tattoo branding him as a Targent trainee. Adult: Longer, shaggy hair with a lean build.
Fave outfit: Long sleeved blue hood, dark sunglasses, black trousers. Basically, a lesser, grungier version of the Targent grunts' uniforms.
Personality: Jun is all around lazy, laid-back and lacking in physical strength... Not exactly Targent cadet material. It shows how he was bottom of the class when training at the Roost. He was despised by Targent instructors for skipping classes, and punished on a regular basis. But being deemed weak has given him the drive to survive. He did manage to escape from the Roost, with the promise to free his fellow cadets one day... He's just struggling to commit to that promise.
Likes/ dislikes: Jammy dodgers, junk food, the beach, freedom, the 'mysterious man' who helped free him, fencing (though he's not great at it)/ Targent, military, school, authority, his parents, fruit
Ambitions: To free any recruits enslaved by Targent, and subsequently shut down Targent altogether.
Bio: When he was 10, Jun was dumped at the Roost training centre by his parents. With the help of mysterious man,
) with the aim of taking down Targent.
Family: Unnamed parents whom he resents for abandoning him. When he was younger, he had a precocious crush on his fencing instructor Mira and he regarded Desmond Sycamore as an older brother. He's fond of Mint.
Theme song: Go the Distance by Lucas Grabeel
Name: Mira Sharpace (From Bonds Left Unbroken)
Home Town: Stansbury/
Occupation: Fencing instructor.

Family: Her daughter, Anne/ Anne's father/ Desmond Layton- Student and ?/ Jun Duan- Student/ ?-Sister In Law
Theme song: Shake It Out- Florence The Machine
I'm kind of sporadic with my updating schedule for my multi-chaptered stories. Usually it depends if I'm in a good mood, or if I'm working around a writer's block. When I'm not focussing on multi-chaptered fics, I often write oneshots to focus on different characters or get my feels out :') Sometimes I'll make attempts at character development for characters that don't get enough appreciation, and other times I'll shamelessly write about my favourite characters/ pairings. Mostly you'll find Professor Layton fics, and maybe an occasional Rhythm Thief fic.
*Bonds Left Unbroken
Description: An AU about Layton's backstory revealed in Azran Legacy which I can't talk about here due to spoilers.
Current Status: My main priority.
*The Archeologist and the Orphan
Description: Following the death of his fiance in an explosion, a twenty- seven- year- old Professor Hershel Layton feels as if everything significant in his life has been ripped away from him. After loosing his parents during the same incident, an ten- year- old Clive is orphaned and taken into care. Both Clive and Layton are left grieving, both of them yearn for a family to call their own. What happens when the professor visits the orphanage and adopts the forlorn boy?
Current status: Uum...
*The Woes of Being Rosetta Stone
Current Status: Updates whenever I feel like it!
Description: A Professor Layton/ Rhythm Thief crossover. I was so psyched when they announced there was going to be a PLvPW crossover that I started to read some crossover fics. Rhythm Thief is another favourite game of mine for the 3DS which I thought had a very Layton-esque feel to it, despite it obviously being a rhythm game. It has rhythmic puzzles, cutscenes, charming characters, a heart-warming story and a gripping mystery. I began to imagine what would happen if the RT cast met the PL characters, so I wrote a oneshot that became the multi-chaptered crossover fic I'm currently writing.
Current Status: COMPLETE (Bonus Chapters may be included.)
*The Layton, the Witch and the Top Hat
Description: ...The story begins with the professor's spare top hat, for without it Luke would never have found his way into Larnia, or ever heard of the Dark Witch, or ever have been followed through the wardrobe by Emmy, Clive and Flora.
Current Status: COMPLETE :D STILL working on that Bonus chapter.
*Randall's Road Trip
Description: A pure crack-fic about Randall touring the country with his friends in the Laytonmobile.
Current Status: COMPLETE.
Future Fanfic Ideas:
*Prince Randall (Sequel to The Layton, the Witch and the Top Hat)
Description: The second story I hope to do in the Chronicals of Larnia series. Teenage Lando Ascad stars as Prince Lando in this Layton/Narnia crossover.
A hundred years have passed since the glorious reign of the great Kings and Queens of old Larnia. But now the land has been invaded by the ruthless Targents and the true Larnians lie on the the brink of extinction. Prince Lando notices the anguish created by his selfish uncle, King Bill, but he cannot save Larnia alone. He blows Queen Flora's Lost Flute, evoking four familiar British siblings to return to the kingdom...
*The Voyage of the Crown Petone
*The Archaeologist’s Nephew (Prequel to The Layton, the Witch and the Top Hat)
Description: Young Hershel Layton and his friend, Claire Foley stumble out of their own world into a magical land, meeting a Witch-- ("SORCERER!")... and this is how the adventures in Larnia began.
I have a lot of story ideas, too many in fact. I'll probably never get around to writing them all. If you want to use any of these ideas, feel free! But you could tell me first! :)
*Kati-stasia (A Professor Layton adaption loosely based off the animated film 'Anastasia')
Description: Join seventeen-year-old Katia on a journey to the past. With the help of a gentleman professor and his apprentice, she must travel across England to find the family she left behind, while outwitting a criminal mastermind. Could Katia really be the Duke Herzen's long lost granddaughter?
*Avatar: The Legend of Aurora (PL Avatar AU)
Professor Layton and his assistants- Emmy, an Earthbender and Luke a Waterbender- discover a young girl trapped in a block of ice. Aurora, the Avatar and supposedly the last Airbender. Can Aurora master all of the elements before Targent wipe out bending for good?
Description: Set after the events of Puzzling Rhythms, but this would purely be a Rhythm Thief fic. Raphael must discover what truly happened to his father and defeat the real Napoleon. His only clue is a golden music box containing a letter from his father and a lullaby his mother used to sing...
