My general thoughts for reading Fanfiction:
So when i try finding a story to read on the site, i'm normally looking for certain types of criteria just because i'm that picky. I like my stories to have a tons of detail and description i want to feel like i'm reading something professional but not so professional that i end up falling asleep because things begin to drag. Although its difficult, i like to try and find the stories that are unique, the stuff that hasn't been done to death on the site and is very hard to imitate. When it comes to pairings, i normally don't have a preference as long as the storyline is good and the pairing isn't always the main focus (it depends on the genre). And finally, if you know how i write, i prefer crossovers among other things and mostly read them although i do read normal fics as well though not as much. Crossovers are always a joy because if they're done well they can meld the two series in question into a cohesive world and its not the easiest thing to do (speaking from experience here).
The Things i despise with Fanfiction:
The copy/paste stories that are all over this site, seriously some of these authors are very uncreative and very lazy and will take an already established plot from someone else and butcher it into an un-cohesive mess. Favortism among characters/series, i see this all the time, rather than make a good story where everyone is treated with some degree a fairness (main character or not) people will take the most negative aspects of a character and amplify it to the max to make somewhat decent and well established characters into complete and utter douchebags with no sense of morality, compassion, or intelligence and have them stray VERY far from their original personality while the favored character is loved by all non-bashed characters, get a massive harem for whatever reason, and becomes a smug bastard with every power under the fucking sun for no damn reason! This is seen in most Naruto-related stories and its embarrassing. Now sometimes i don't mind if a character is bashed to a degree but not to the point where their normal personality is non-existent and replaced with stupid. Then there is God-like stories, stories where a single character curb stomps every other established character with little to no effort. Now i don't mind God-like fics, hell i have a few in my favorites list but that's only because of one single detail: Progressiveness. The God mode is not instant, characters have to work for that achievement, stories like that get a pass. No the ones i'm talking about are when a character gets some ridiculous power up for no good reason and is suddenly the strongest thing alive...THOSE I HATE!! Then the one thing that i just don't understand, when terrible stories get so much praise...why?? Seriously there have been stories that i've come across with so many plot, grammer, and pacing issues and yet i look at the story's status and its got hundreds of favs, follows, and reviews (although many of the reviews are negative as they should be). I guess idiots read what idiots write...ugh i give up.
My Concern in DBZ Crossovers:
Just something i felt i needed to address, so every DBZ fan knows just what the characters are capable of and its obvious to the anime community that Dragon Ball can absolutely wreck shit up! Between its over the top characters and transformations and the planet-busting techniques the series is known for its understandable that the average fan believes that its impossible to compare the legendary franchise to any other...Too bad i'm not one of them. Look i've been a DBZ fan for the last 16 years, i've watched the entire series imported and subtitled from Japan before Cell was relevant in America, have played plenty of the classic Butoden games, and watched the entire franchise more times than i care to count in both english and japanese so yes i know what the hell i'm talking about when this series is the subject. I also know another thing that a lot of fans fail to acknowledge: Dragon Ball Z is overrated, it's not quality anime, its not the almighty king of Shounen like people love to claim, its awesomely ball-busting testosterone filled action sure but it lacks substance, it lacks a decent plot, and by the end of Freeza you can pretty much guess what the hell is going to happen next, OP villain kicks heroes asses, heroes train and kick bad guys ass, then use dragon balls to reverse the damage, for god sakes it happens twice in a row if you don't count the filler.
Then we get into the core of my little rant, the crossovers on this sight or more notably the fanboy comments i find on both mine and plenty of other decent authors stories. People seem to get stuck on the fact that DBZ is superior to everything its ever crossed with and won't accept the fact that their precious DBZ can lose to a series like Naruto and will drop a story at a drop of a hat if their favorite character is not god-like OP and demolishing everything in their path no matter how well written said story is. HELLO PEOPLE ITS A CROSSOVER!! When i write or read a crossover of any series, i try and find the stories where, for the most part things are kept fair, kept balanced for the sake of the plot and all characters have a fair chance in battle. Now obviously its not always like this and there are a fair amount of stories that have immensely powerful characters but the characters themselves keep themselves grounded and are not blowing everything the fuck up. Kenchi 618's True Warriors Never Die is a good example of this and i recommend it, it's a fantastic Naruto/Bleach crossover. But back on track DBZ crossovers are for the most part, laughably bad because of fanboys who scare the authors into writing about what the fanboys what and not what the author wants which results in piss-poor writing, confusing as hell plots, and grammer issues toddlers would quirk an eyebrow and its just not a joy to read. And then there are the fantastic stories that i love to read like WingedFreedom 622's Gohan's Dilemma and its sequel Gohan's Return, the best written DBZ/Naruto crossovers bar none, that just get shitted on by fanboys who rant over Gohan's 'weakness' throughout the story most notably the first one. In the story Gohan is sent to the Elemental Nations through one of Bulma's inventions, ok so basic premise, the only difference is a plot twist that i will not spoil but is the subject of complaints from fans of DBZ.
People complain about how Gohan is significantly nerfed in the story in order for his opponents to stand a fighting chance...that's a GOOD thing and it makes for good story-telling. People don't seem to get that if certain characters were OP like in their own franchises there wouldn't be a story, the main character would steamroll everything and make the story BORING. And another thing i want to address in this rant...the planet-busting techniques. Now pop quiz, tell me besides Goku's fake out with his Instant Transmission Kamehameha combo against Cell, can anyone name me a time when a DBZ hero would resort to a technique that had the energy to destroy a planet if it struck the Earth, and no ex-villains like Vegeta and Piccolo don't count because when they tried techniques such as those, they were not heroes, i'm talking about after they were a legitimate part of the team...can't do it can you? Of course not, why? because that's not how the Z-Warriors do things it would be incredibly counterproductive. They would never risk destroying a planet to kill their enemies so why bring up techniques with a power like that in your stupid rants about why DBZ shouldn't lose to other franchises? Yeah we know they CAN do that but we also know that they WON'T so its a moot point. And don't even get me started on other fighting methods that can be hazardous to a DBZ character's health, how do you think they would counter Naruto's poisons, seals, tactical finesse, and genjutsu, Bleach's Kido, defensive enhancements, and unqiue styles of fighting methods and abilities, Fairy Tail's ridiculous variety of magic that could make anything a Z warrior can dish out ineffective, or hell even the OPness that is One Piece (A series i do not enjoy) can have effective methods to combat a DBZ character. Let's face it DBZ fighters fight using four basic things: ridiculously fast hand to hand combat, flight, ki techniques, and lots of powering up via constipated shouting with large amounts of collateral damage. DBZ is a one trick pony worse than any Hyuga when you boil it down like i just did. To all DBZ fans re-think your arguements because power is not what makes a good story or fight let alone a good crossover. Melding the good qualities of both franchises together into a cohesive plot is what makes a good crossover remember that.
