Things I Like
Constructive Criticism/Feedback: It's how I'm going to grow and improve as a writer. If something seems off, if the characters act...well, out of character, if my phrasing is awkward - tell me! I won't bite your head off, and you might just get bombarded with questions about how you feel I can improve.
Questions: Something bugging you? Have a burning question you need answered? Don't be shy. PM me here or reach out through various other mediums (Twitter: VitaFidens; Tumblr: BitterOldHag). I'm normally quite pleasant and very much enjoy meeting people who share my interests.
Things I'll Tolerate But Don't Enjoy
Baseless Criticism: "This sucks." "This isn't what I wanted to happen." OK. Two things that are important for me to hear. But...why? If it's a personal preference thing and has little to do with the manner in which I've progressed the story, then sorry - you're SOL. If it doesn't seem right or if things don't fit, then tell me why you think that way. I've likely not explained or fleshed out an idea that needs to be fleshed out. This moves the criticism from baseless to constructive, and it makes me a happy (and better!) author.
Telling Me What My Characters Should Do: "I would (blank) if I were so-and-so." "She's stupid." "She needs to do a, b, c." Listen. I'm not my characters. I usually agree that I'd do something totally different personally. Besides, if she wasn't 'stupid' or did do a, b, or c...we wouldn't have a story. If you don't want the story to exist - sorry, it does. You don't have to read it, if that's any consolation. If you do continue reading it, please realize that it's (usually) part of a bigger plan, and there's a reason for these things to happen.
Telling me you're obsessed with me/my stories: While super flattering, it's a little awkward for me. I'm never quite sure how to take it. So feel free to tell me such things, but be aware...my response might be kind of awkward, because I myself am kind of awkward.
Things I Dislike
Demands to update faster: This isn't my job. I'm old enough to have a career with both full-time and part-time engagements (2 jobs, for those keeping score at home) as well as a home to maintain and a partner to keep happy. Updating with a new chapter, while something I enjoy whole-heartedly and would love to do with great frequency, sometimes falls on the lower end of the ever-growing list of things I need to do. If you're an eccentric millionaire and willing to pay me good money to make this my job, PM me and we'll talk. Otherwise...please be patient.
Guest Reviews: I've made it no secret that I loathe this feature on FF and would turn it off if I could. If you ask a question as a guest and don't leave me an alternate means to contact you, how am I going to answer it? It's frustrating to want to explain something to someone and be unable to reach them to discuss. If you have a constructive criticism, PLEASE do not be afraid to leave contact info. I thoroughly enjoy discussing writing with everyone, and especially those who might help me improve my craft.
Things I Will NOT Tolerate
Drama Pajamas: Simply put, if you leave a review insulting another reviewer or attacking me personally and not the work I'm publishing, I will ask you to delete it (or, if you are reviewing as a guest - as these kinds of reviews so often are - I won't allow it through). If you don't comply, you'll be blocked. Period. End of story.
