"You must be ready to burn yourself in your own flame: how could you become new, if you had not first become ashes?" - Nietzsche.
As people we are constantly reinventing ourselves. But we cannot change our molecules, the very things that make us, us. We are always the same thing at our core; a mysterious nature exists in each of us. I take the quote above to mean we become renewed, but only through what it was we once were. The phoenix rises from the ashes, but rises only from the desolation of what it once was. We create and destroy ourselves, but we are always what we always were.
I like to explore many themes through my writing: love and loss, grief and melancholia, happiness and loneliness. Mostly it's about breaking through. Breaking through obstacles, barriers, walls… Coming out the other side renewed. I enjoy writing about journeys, about progression and accomplishment. Change. Reinvention. Finding oneself amongst the pretence and subterfuge. Becoming.
Fanfiction and fandom are especially important to me. The worlds of creators like Joss Whedon and J.J. Abrams, Emily Dickinson and Sylvia Plath, Quentin Tarantino and David Lynch are legacies. I study them because it's part of my legacy. I write in their worlds because it's the best kind of addiction. I'm a junkie, the best kind of junkie. I wouldn't want to be anything else.
