How I feel about LOK's ending:
Let me start off by saying that I am happy for the Korrasami shippers. I know its always a great feeling when you know the couple you wanted together is endgame. However, this is the second time that the couple I have wanted to be together has not been endgame and thus, I am a little disappointed. I never shipped Kataang when ATLA was on. I always thought of them as having a sibling-type bond. I really didn't even know what "shipping" was at the time. I ended up finding out about Zutara while searching different forums. Immediately, they seemed like a much better match than Kataang, at least in my opinion. For the rest of the show (books 2 and 3), I rooted for them.
I remember when The Crossroads of Destiny aired, I was hoping that Zuko would side with the Gaang and Katara would heal his scar with the spirit water. Obviously, that didn't happen. Bryke gave us Zutara shippers some reason to believe that Zutara stood a chance. After all, Zuko helped Katara get closure over her mother's death and saved her life in the series finale when Azula shot lightning at her. Well, you all know what happened next. Kataang ended up together and had Kya, Bumi, and Tenzin. I still wish Zutara had ended up together, but I've grown to accept Kataang as canon. Now, onto LOK...
When I first learned of LOK in 2010, I was so incredibly happy. ATLA was my favorite show during the latter half of my childhood and I was so happy that they were going to continue the series. I couldn't wait for its premiere date in 2011, but unfortunately, its air date was pushed back to 2012. During book 1, I was extremely disappointed with the show. I hated that Kataang only had one child that could airbend and I hated that at the time, we did not know the fates of many of our beloved TLA characters. All we knew was that Zuko and Katara were alive. *SPOILER ALERT* If you have watched book 4 of LOK, you know Toph is still alive. *SPOILER ALERT* Another con of the show for me was all the new technology. I liked the fact that ATLA was set in a simpler time. Sure, there was technological development throughout the series, but it never got to the point of LOK with radios and cars. As the series progressed, I began to look past those things and enjoy the fact that the Avatar universe was still around, even if it was not what I imagined it should be.
Since I pointed out some things I disliked about LOK, I feel in the act of fairness, I should point out things I liked. First off, pro-bending. I enjoyed watching all of the pro-bending matches in book 1. Second, I loved learning about the origin of the avatars in book 2 with Wan and Raava. My favorite book was book 3. I find very little fault with that book and I especially loved the Red Lotus. I would argue that they were the best villains of any Avatar arc. Oh, and how could I not mention the Beifongs? I absolutely adored the idea of Zaofu and I appreciated that Bryke gave Toph a big family with all of Su's children. My favorites were Wei, Wing, and Huan. Personally, I did not like Opal and that is partially because I didn't agree with the decision to make her one of the new airbenders. There wasn't a lot I liked about book 4, apart from Bolin learning how to lavabend and Zhu Li and Varrick getting married.
Anyways, back to why I disliked the ending of LOK. As I said at the beginning of this passage, I am happy for the Korrasami shippers. Really, I am, but I'd be lying if I said I wasn't hoping that Makorra would get back together. I know that Makorra was no where near the most popular ship of the show, but I always supported them from day one. I was a little heartbroken that once again, my ship didn't end up together. But as they say, what's done is done and Bryke has already confirmed Korrasami as canon. I don't wish to get involved in the huge wars going on in the fandom, but I feel the need to point out that I was not entirely satisfied with the ending to LOK. Its not just Korrasami either. I guess I was expecting a different ending with Aang showing up and talking to Korra or Katara and Korra talking (reminiscent of TLA's ending). I still hold out hope that one day we will get another installment of the Avatar series. Here's till then.
