When the battle's done

At a terrible cost

In the river deep

Let your armor rust

And your body sleep

But the shadows creep

And they’ll all forget

What you fought to keep

And there’ll be a song

With a broken tune

When the next war comes

A life too soon

They’ll call your name

You’ll claim your shield

And stand upon

That bloodstained field

And tremble knowing

What they’d wrought

And wonder why

You ever thought

That life was something

To be sought

When death was all

You’d ever caught.
