Author has written 3 stories for Firefly.
OK a couple of quotes, one might be mine but only cause I have not heard anyone else say it.
"Nobody does anything stupid on purpose, it just works out that way" mine I think not sure though
"Americans always do the right thing, after they have tried everything else" Churchill
I got onto this site initially to explore Tolkien, was quite dismayed to find out how hard it was for Arwen to keep her clothes on. She is luthien come again and Luthien is perfection. Being a fan of Tolkien means there are about 20 books of rules, and he wrote it all. I gave up on it, only one man knew this world and he is dead.
River Tam in music, Caitlin Deville on YT, Hysteria, Hyena, CyberLion, RapidFire. Violins rock. Besides they could be sisters. Unabashed plug for a favorite artist.
I am presently working on some Firefly fics, mainly they will be short and take place roughly five years after Miranda. The verse has become more dangerous and complex as a result of Miranda. "the storm is getting worse" I don't think River Tam talks about the weather. There will be numerous OC's in my verse and not all of my stories will actually have any of the crew members in them. The verse is a big place with Billions of people. The crew will remain the focal point of course, even if they are not present in a particular story, or have only cameo appearances. I also want to explore the Blue Sun Conspiracy, that Whedon has referred to. I might be a rarity in that while I think the Alliance is rather bad at governing it not an Evil Empire. It does bad things and I think Blue Sun is largely behind it using its wealth and influence to corrupt its workings and goals. I think the storm River is referring to is one of eventual conflict between the Alliance and Blue Sun. Which fits nicely with personal views of the influence big business is having on our governments at all levels, virtually everywhere in the world. The vast differences in demeanor and motivation of the Blue Hands and the Operative I do not think are an accident. Whedon says half the government is Blue Sun, so what about the other half.
For my views on the Alliance I would ask people to look at Harken(Bushwacked), his FIRST order after a med team is killed by the Reaver Boy is to double the guard on the nursery, an odd order for an evil representative of an evil empire. It is the kind of order given by a decent man. Reynolds faults him for being naive and to civilized. In Train job a young crew member expects her commander to react to the theft of vital medicine. The commander still has it on his mind when talking to the Blue Hands though. This i think important because it was the first aired Episode, the Alliance does not look bad so much as arrogant and out of touch. It is not the Firefly crew the bad Feds in the Message are afraid of it is that they might be reported to legitimate Federal authority. In the Episode that should have been first the Alliance cruiser lets them go to rush to the aid of a what they thought was a disabled civilian transport. Episode 15 (a working script) makes it clear Lt Quillan is smart competent and just arrogant enough to like. Not once but twice she places herself between suspect Browncoats and those wanting vengeance for a Browncoat terrorist attack. She is about real justice, a hint at what the Alliance could be. Yeah some browncoats are bad (Tracey), others are just plain vicious fanatics (Declan). Killing innocent women and children. As Mal says it's not war if no one is shooting back, it's just murder. (Episode 15 Dead or Alive). You also get a hint of how tough River really is, she escaped on her own but was recaptured by Blue Hands, she was punished horribly by Blue Demons and screamed and screamed.
Last I am working out River Tam, the damage Simon tells us about in Ariel and what it does is wildly wrong, so wrong in fact it almost has to be intentional. Such damage would result in Kluver-Bose syndrome. River would be completely unafraid of anything and have an urge to taste everything (Early anyone) she would also be hyper sexual. The embarrassed little smile at the end of OiS when Kaylee is talking about one of her youthful indiscretions sort of negates that. Her brain would have to be rewired in some mysterious way for her act the way she acts. There is an essay on River by a Neural Physician about River Tam that describes this in Physchology of Whedonverses.
The thing virtually everyone misses about the verse is that it is based on Killer Angels. There is no evil in Killer Angels there is only courage. The 20th Maine's stand is legendary on the far left, outnumbered, outgunned and out of ammunition they fixed bayonets and charged(these would be Feds in the verse). Buford's Union cavalry are initially outgunned and outmanned yet hold long enough for the rest of the Army of the Potomac to deploy gaining fire superiority over the Army of Virginia. Both sides continued to feed units into the Grinder. Pickett's Charge is perhaps the saddest moment of that battle, how they actually reached Union lines is beyond belief crossing that fence line(these are the Independents), that was Lee being just stupid.
