Up next is a story that I wrote, if you're reading this read on, I just want to know if it's good or not. The reason why I'm not posting it is because it's not a actual fan-fiction. It's called Slipping Away. :)
Jason runs down the street, straight to his best friend, Destiny's house, to give her the present that he spent weeks trying to find. Large oak trees surround his best friends large house at the end of the block, pushing open the black gate he rushes to find her. Inside Destiny's house, a large banner lines the wall above the door, 'Happy Birthday Destiny!' is written on it. Straight to the living room Jason heads, looking for the birthday girl. The living room is a large rectangle shaped room with a long couch that curves around the back corners, and behind it is a wall filled with nothing but family photos. The largest family on the block, The Grove's, having 6 kids, Destiny, Dexter, David, Dana, Dakota, and Danny. All of their school photos and other random family photos line that wall. Jason rushes into the kitchen, through the door at the other end of the room, finding Mrs. Grove sitting at the island, phone to her ear. Outside he goes, finding Mr. Grove and all of the kids, except Destiny, playing in their pool with Mr. Grove grilling some chicken, Destiny's favorite, for his daughters birthday.
“Jason, she's in her bedroom,” Mr. Grove says, and Jason sprints back into the kitchen, straight to the dining room and then up the stairs to the second floor. Running to the door at the end of the hall, opening it, to head for his best friend's attic bedroom. There she is, sitting on her bed playing guitar, humming softly.
“Hey, Dest, you won't believe what I got you for your birthday!” Jason says, walking in, sitting next to her. Everything is silent. A minute passes and still no response from the usually bubbly and talkative girl. “Destiny, are you okay? What's up?”
“Everything's fine, just tired, that's all. What were you saying about present?” She says, her usual bubbly self returning. Jason holds out two tickets. One Direction tickets, for their concert that sold out weeks ago. Destiny screams at the top of her lungs, then pretends to faint falling onto the bed. “How did you get these? They sold out like 2 weeks ago!”
“Who do you think won the two backstage passes on that contest that they put out? I spent weeks entering in, until I won, I knew you would enjoy it. I suggest you get ready, one your party will start soon and two, you have a concert to go to tonight,” Jason says smiling at his best friend, who's in shock at this moment.
“You know you're the most sneaky, devious, awesome, full of secrets person I know? That's why you're my best friend!” Destiny says laughing.
“I think this will be a birthday you will never forget.”
I walk downstairs, straight to the backyard, where a few tables are now set up. Chairs are being placed as I walk up, and I see a few kids from school starting to arrive. They are all 'popular' kids walking in, not my kind of crowd, Destiny's; absolutely. This girl, Hannah, walks by, shoving me and a few other kids do the same, until I'm at the edge of the pool. No. I'm gone, I gave Dest her present, I'll meet up with her for the concert. Destiny walks out, wearing a cream colored shirt with gold, silver and black wings on it and a black skirt with silver lining it along with black tights and a pair of flats. Everyone surrounds her, except for this one other kid, Nathan, and he pushes me in before I could run. Great, now I'm soaked, yeah bye Dest, see you at the concert. Climbing out of the pool, I walk to the side of her house, walking to the front, leaving.
“JASON BRETT MORRISON GET BACK TO THIS PARTY NOW!” I hear someone yell, and I turn to find none other than Destiny. “Why are you all wet?”
“No reason, just got shoved into the pool by your 'friends',” I say turning to go home again.
“You can go home and change, but if you don't show back up in the next ten...,” Destiny says, stopping mid-sentence. She is just staring off into nothing now, whispering something, then it turns into a small argument with herself. She never talks to herself, let alone argues with herself, somethings up.
“Destiny? Hello? You okay there?” I ask her, waving my hand in front of her face, still nothing.
“Hey Destiny, you're missing the party!” Hannah shouts walking to the front and as soon as Destiny hears her voice she snaps out of it.
“Yeah, coming Hannah.” Turning, she walks back to the party, leaving me alone to think about what just happened. Something weird is going on, and I'm going to figure out what it is.
* * *
Walking back over to Destiny's house, I replay what happened earlier in my head. Why is she talking to herself, she has everything a person could want, and now she is slipping off into her own world. The question is why now, of all times that she could start slipping away, why now? I make it to her house and she is sitting on the couch in the living room, staring off into the distance again. Whispering to someone; saying 'go away'.
“Destiny?” I ask and she just keeps staring off.
'Please, just leave me alone, I don't want to go!' I shout to my friends, well I'm not sure what they are anymore. They are starting to yell at me now, I don't know what to do. If I tell someone, they say that they will hurt them.
“Destiny?” Someone says concern lining their voice, but I don't see anyone. Just my friends, I don't even remember where I am anymore, I think I'm in my living room. It's different though, more dark, like how a scene in a scary movie would be. Before the place where my friends lived was happy, bright and full of joy. Now, since I said I want to stay with Jason and my family, it's dark and scary. Someone is shaking me now, I can feel them but I can't see them, until my friend's let me go.
“Jason?” I ask and he nods, smiling. My friends are still there, I know, but their presence isn't as strong now.
“Concert time?” He asks grabbing my hand. I nod excitedly and my mom walks out to drive us. We make it to the center where it's being held and Jason and I slip on our backstage passes.
My mom turns around and says,“Checklist, phones, passes, money, anything else you would need?” We nod each time she says something. “Okay have fun, call me when you need picked up.” Getting out of the car, I run around to Jason, dragging him along, up to the entrance. Yeah, I don't think he's that excited, but he won the passes, so he has to come!
“Never would of guessed that you would be excited,” Jason says as we walk in, a man greeting us and asking us which one of us won the passes. “That would be me.”
“Okay sir, well, both of you come with me, you can see the boys before they head out onstage. If you have any questions ask anyone for Marcel.” Down the hall we head to a room where they are, ONE DIRECTION! My friends are getting angry though, they are taking over, again. Everything goes dark and it's just me and my friends again. They are ruining this for me, I waited so long just to meet One Direction and now they took that away.
“Dearie, it's for your own good, nobody there cares, we care,” One of them says and the others echo, “we care” for a long time. Maybe they do care, maybe they are protecting me.
Worst concert ever, I had to get Destiny home and tell her parents that something is the matter with her, she started talking to herself and ran outside hid behind the building. Of course nobody believes me, it makes no sense, I'm her best friend and have always been there. Yet now I'm a bad influence and I was the one who apparently yelled at her and told her that we weren't going to stay for the stupid concert. Yeah sure that is so what happened, and now I'm not allowed near her and her siblings aren't allowed near me. She has stopped talking to everyone and is refusing to eat or move, according to Dexter, the only one of her siblings who never quite learned to follow orders told me at the bus stop before we each went home. Why is she slipping away now, and why would she want to?
I'm so hungry, but my friends say that if I eat then they can't protect me from them. They say the food is bad and that it's poisonous or something. All I can see is weird black smudges and that's it, I can barely hear voices, except my friend's voices. I miss Jason, where is he? My friends say he doesn't care about me and that nobody, not even my family cares anymore. That they think I'm worthless, but Jason is my best friend, I'm not sure. Yeah, we had a few fights but we made up and we laugh about it now, and he got me the tickets for my birthday! Another smudge appears at my window, the fire escape, and opens the window climbing inside.
“Destiny? Please come back!” The smudge says, it's the only voice that I've heard clearly all day. It's so familiar, so kind and caring...Jason?
“Jason?” I ask and I can feel myself being released and all of the darkness starts to fade. But some still remains on the outer edges of my vision, and my friends whisper,'Be warned, they don't care, they never did, and you will be our queen. Whether you like it or not.'
After I climb through Destiny's window, I see her face, sullen and turning slightly gray. She hasn't eaten, I remind myself and I say,
“Destiny? Please come back!” She looks at me, and smiles slightly, maybe she's coming back.
“Jason?” She asks and I can see a little bit of her natural skin tone return. I run forward, hugging her and she hugs back.
“You need to eat something, okay? I needed to see if you were okay.”
“Why didn't you come through the door?” She asks and I explain what happened. She shakes her head saying, “ That's not right, please stay, I want to explain to my mom and dad. MOM!!”
“Destiny, is that you are you okay?” Mrs. Grove says running in hugging her daughter, then realizing that I'm there. “Get out now Jason, you are not welcome anymore, you know that.”
“Mom, I have to tell you something,” Destiny says, then starts explaining. These people in her mind, her friends, as she puts it, that's who she's talking to.
My mom signed me up for some sort of therapy session thing, great, sarcasm intended. I agree that my friends are getting harsher, but I'm not the problem.
“Hello Destiny, I'm Jamie Morrison, your therapist. I know that sounds weird, but this doesn't mean you're crazy or anything, this is just for you to say your feelings,” This lady with dark brown curly hair and bright happy blue eyes says, smiling. So someone believes that I'm not the problem, besides Jason and myself. “Would you like to talk about any of the recent events? If not, we can take it slow.”
“Okay...um...well these people, or well creatures kept showing up in my dreams a few weeks ago, their world was so happy and bright. They said I could stay with them, multiple times actually, but a few days ago, my birthday, I said I wanted to stay with my family and Jason. Their world became dark, and harder to leave, they became less a dream and more a nightmare. Everywhere I went they were there, begging me to become their queen, to stay with them. They told me if I ate then I couldn't stay with them, they were taking my senses in a way. I could see, but everything was just dark smudges, I couldn't hear anything clearly, except my best friend Jason's voice, that is what brought me out of their world the last time. They are still there, I can feel their presence, but I don't want to go with them they are being really mean now,” I say, tears forming at the edges of my eyes, I didn't think I could say all of that to anyone. The only person who I told the complete story to besides Jamie, was Jason. She reminds me of him, the same curly dark brown hair and bright blue eyes, they could be related. Wait, she said her last name is Morrison. “ Are you related to Jason Morrison?”
“Yes, he's my nephew, he asked your mom specifically to call me when she started talking about therapy,” Jamie says smiling the signature Morrison smile.
I cough into my elbow, walking to Destiny's house, she should be getting back from her therapy session soon. This is weird, I've been coughing and feeling sick ever since Destiny came out of that trance thing. I haven't been eating as much as I usually do and I am always tired. It's so strange, I even have been seeing black smudges at the edges of my vision.
“Hey, dude, want a lift?” A voice shouts from a car passing by. Destiny.
“Sure,” I say, getting in her mom's jeep, coughing.
“Are you okay, Jason, you have been coughing and you are getting really pale,” Destiny says, looking at me from the front seat.
“Yeah, I'm good,” I say waving her off. The truth is though, I'm not, I keep getting really dizzy. I'm really tired...everything is starting to fade into a white light. The last thing I see are these humanoid creatures, and they say,
“We warned her, now we shall take what she wanted to leave us for.”
We get to my house, and I turn to find Jason slumped over on his side, weird. He never falls asleep on that short of a drive, but he is sick.
“Jason, wake up, we're here!” I shout, getting out and opening the back door. No response. I grab his arm and shake him, but it looks like he's unconscious. “Mom? We need to take Jason to the hospital, he isn't waking up.” My mom walks around, checking on Jason, and realizing the situation.
“Call Jason's mother, I know she's at work, but leave her a message. After that call his aunt please,” My mom says, getting back in the car. I follow in suit, grabbing my phone, calling Jason's mom and leaving a message. Now is time for his Aunt Jamie.
“Hello?” Jamie's voice comes through the phone.
“Yeah, Jamie, it's Destiny and well something is the matter with Jason. He has been sort of sick lately, and we passed him, while he was coming to meet me at my house, and we gave him a lift. I found him slumped over in the back seat and he isn't responding to anything,” I say, concern lining my voice.
“I'll be right there,” She says, hanging up. We get to the hospital in record time and we check Jason into the emergency room. Good thing he has his information cards in his wallet, how is he trusted with those anyways? They take him back, but the nurse lady said we have to wait until a family member shows up, and then with their okay, we can go back.
“Where is he?” Jamie asks, rushing into the hospital. I point up to the nurse and she goes up, asking her. Jamie motions for us to follow her and we go back, straight to the room where Jason is at. There is a machine hooked up to him and he has a breathing mask on. What happened to you Jason? The doctor walks in, pulling aside Jamie and my mom, telling them some stuff, then walking out.
“Jason is in a coma, Destiny, we have to leave when visiting hours are over, only family can stay after that,” My mom says, looking me in the eye. Family? WE ARE FAMILY! He is my best friend, the person I tell everything to, the person I care about the most. Now to the other question; Coma? What would cause him to fall into a coma? Then a voice comes back into my head,“We warned you dear.”
“What do you want with him?” I ask my 'friends' and they snicker in response,
“We warned you, and now we will take what you left us for.” They are going to... No I can't let that happen to Jason.
“What if I went with you, would you spare everyone, including Jason?” I can see them nod their heads, then they go into a circle,
“Yes, that would be fair, tomorrow visit him, and we shall release him. Then we shall take you, dear.'”Okay, now that I figured that out, I need to get ready for tomorrow, it will be my last day with my family after all. I sit down at my desk, grabbing bottle of ink and a special feather pen, I like the old fashion way to write. It's weird, but I've always loved old things, Jason said that was one of his favorite things about me. I feel tears forming at the brims of my eyes, but I hold them back as I write my letter. A letter to my family; check, a letter to my friends from school; check, and now I have the longest letter finished. That ones for Jason. I put them all in three envelopes after they dry, then I write who their to on them, sitting them on my nightstand. I lie down on my bed, they explain everything, I will be fine; I just won't be happy.
The Next Day
Falling asleep was the hardest part of last night, but I found my cheeks covered in tears and my eyes red and puffy. I guess I cried myself to sleep last night.
“Destiny, we are going to the hospital in about thirty minutes, get ready sweetie!” My mom yells from downstairs. Great, that's sooner than I expected, good thing I wrote the letters last night. I get changed into a gray pullover sweatshirt and a pair of yoga pants, grabbing my socks and black nikes with bright red laces. Just then I realize that this is Jason's sweatshirt, he let me borrow it a few weeks ago when we went to the fair and we stayed for the fireworks after it. I was cold so he gave it to me, he's always been there for me, Jason is the best friend a person could have. He doesn't deserve to die because I said that I didn't want to stay with my friends, I'll take his place. I can't think of any other way to repay him for everything he has done for me, he even broke the rules trying to get me back from my friends. Walking downstairs, the letters in the pocket of Jason's sweatshirt, I head for my mom's jeep. We make it to the hospital, and the nurse lady walks us back to Jason's new room, where Jamie is sitting; fast asleep by his side. His mother had to leave for work this morning, despite a large argument with her boss over the phone about this. I walk over to Jason, whispering in his ear,
“It's okay, I fixed everything.” Before I can do anything else, I'm falling back into the darkness and the only one who isn't a smudge is Jason. I see him wake up and then he goes dark too.
“Destiny!” I hear his voice yell before everything goes dark.
What happened? I could see these weird creature things, and it felt like I was dreaming, they were trying to convince me that Destiny is going with them.
'She is with us now, foolish boy, she gave herself to save you.' Echos in my mind and I turn around fast enough to catch her as she falls. She gave up everything, for me, Destiny why would you do that? I look at Destiny, tears forming in my eyes, because I'm the only one who figured it out. Mrs. Grove went to get the doctor and Aunt Jamie is still sleeping. I notice that she has these letters sticking out of her sweatshirt, wait scratch that, my sweatshirt. Smiling at the memory of the fair and the fireworks, I lie her down on the chair, grabbing the letters. They are all addressed to someone, or a group of people; one reads Family, another reads Friends from school, and finally one reads, Jason. Sitting the other two down beside me, I open mine, reading it aloud.
I wish I would have the time to tell you this in person, but I will miss you so much. Jason you are my best friend and I never wanted you to not have the best that's what you deserve. If you are reading this, then I will be with my 'friends' ether before or by the time you finish this. I made a deal with them, once I realized the reason why you fell into the coma was because I wouldn't go with them. As long as I stay with them, then you won't get hurt, that's why I have to stay. I won't be happy there, but it's what I have to do, to save you. Goodbye Jason, you are the best friend a person could ever have, and I need you to move past me. Keep working hard, I know you are a exceptional guitarist and singer, you can make it. In my room there is your first song, the one you gave to me, get it and record it. You are an amazing person Jason, and I will miss you more than anything in the world.
By the end of the letter, I'm crying, and Destiny's mother and the doctor are here. Handing her the letters, I lie back, trying to hold in sobs. My best friend, is now gone, no I can't believe it! There has to be something I can do, but what?
My mind is so dark, and my 'friends' are surrounding me, I don't want to be here and they know that.
“Why don't you want to stay with us?”One of them asks and I respond,
“I want to stay with my best friend and my family, they do care about me, you yell at me. You scare me most of the time, and you force me not to eat, even when I'm starving.” They turn, conversing with one another, but I don't know how much more I can last here.
I finally regain enough composure to turn and look at her, now frozen in a coma-like state, that I doubt she will come back from. That isn't what she would say or be doing right now, if it was me, she would be working on a plan to get me out, to save me. I grab the letter to me, looking at it more closely, to see if she left any clues of how to get her back. Wait, I know what I need!
“Grape juice, now!” I yell at the nurse who is trying to check to see if I'm alright. Truthfully, I feel bad about yelling but I need to figure this out. She comes back with a cup of thing of grape juice and a straw, and I grab my Aunt Jamie's purse, looking for the makeup packet that she always has. Finding it I grab a few cue-tips dipping them in the grape juice, I spread it over the sides of the paper, a hidden message on the side. It's incomplete though, the other letters must have the rest. I open the others and do the same with them, finding the complete message.
Jason voice wakes up; burn dream, destroy 'friends'.
Okay. Now what does that mean? Jason voice wakes up, must mean that when I talk to her, she gets out of her state with them, but burn a dream?
I was released from the hospital later that day, and Jamie brought me home, but after she leaves I zip over to Destiny's house. Straight up the fire escape I head, opening her window, trying to find some so-rt of clue. Nothing. How do you burn a dream? What can burn a dream; what can save my best friend? I got it! A dream catcher, they catch dreams, so if you burn it you burn the dream. Of course, Destiny is the only teenager obsessed with dream catchers, so her room is full of them. Which one holds that dream, well, would they be nightmares and she told me that she made a specific catcher for them. I run over to her bed, grabbing the purple dream catcher with black beads, sitting it on her nightstand. Okay now all I need to to is burn it, so I run to the fireplace downstairs. Grabbing a match off the shelf beside the fireplace, I light it, putting it to the dream catcher and throwing it in the fireplace. It burns and soon it becomes ashes.
My 'friends' start to go up in smoke, but a few stay, Jason. The dream catcher must be burnt, but he only burned one of them. It seems to be the nightmare one, the ones that I was most scared of were the ones to go up in smoke. Jason, you still have four more, I wonder if he read the full note or not?
I call Mrs. Grove at the hospital, and she tells me that there has been no change to Destiny's condition. I thought the dream catcher would be it. Maybe I missed something with the note. Pulling out the letters from my pocket, I walk into the kitchen, grabbing grape juice from the fridge. I still have a few cue-tips left, so I pull them out of my pocket as well. Where is the other clue, I know you had to of left another clue, because you know how I would respond to the first note. The envelopes. Grabbing them, I spread grape juice over them, finding there to be a message on them as well.
Happy, Scary, Danger, Peace, and Hope.
Okay, great, I got the nightmare one so I can cross scary off the list, now on to happy. That's her light pink dream catcher above her bed. Running up, carrying the envelopes with me, I grab the light pink one from her light purple wall above her bed. Now I need danger, peace and hope, but what would those be? Colors. She told me something about the color she thought was most dangerous or something during art one day. Um, what was it...RED! Dark red is her least favorite and apparently the most dangerous color in her eyes, now where did she put that one. Looking around the room, I finally find it on the knob of her dresser drawer. Now onto peace, the most peaceful color, light blue and light pink. On her wall above her window, there is a light pink and blue one hanging by a thread, it's the one I made for her. Let's just say that I'm not very good at making dream catchers. The last one is hope, one that she made on her fifth birthday, when her mother was in the hospital. She always had that hanging over a heart that she painted on her wall, across from her window. I grab that one, running them all down, burning them all in the fireplace, like the other one. Calling Mrs. Grove again, she continues to say there is no change yet, but I did what the note said. Wait, my voice wakes her up! I tell Mrs. Grove to put the phone on speaker, and then I say into the phone,
“Destiny? You have to wake up, I did what your notes said, you have to wake up now!” Apparently she does, because the next thing I hear is,
“You did it, Jason, they are gone now for good.” I did it. I saved her, I saved Destiny Grove, my best friend. She was always the one saving me, now I returned the favor. I hope those 'friends' of hers never come back. I wonder how I can explain what has been happening to my mom when she gets home later?
