![]() Formerly: The Dark Hearted Angel, The blunt snarking literalist Name: Karl Age: 23 Sex: Male Language: Croatian Other languages: English, German, Sarcasm Beta reader for: Lupine Horror First off, English isn't my native language, so I apologise for the occasional grammar/spelling error.(This message is for all my fellow Grammar Nazis) Soo...this is where FF members are meant to write something about themselves, or their stories...where to start? I'm usually laid-back, and try not to take things too serious and disregard other things in life, though I'm not a stranger to hard, dedicated work... I like reading(good stories), playing PC/PS2 games, various music ... I don't like reading badly written stories/books, idiots, stuck-up and arrogant people and noobs . I also don't like Trolls( hypocritical, I know. But at least I'm moderate in trolling unlike some people...) Favorite books: Inheritance Cycle; Artemis Fowl series; Percy Jackson series, Dresden files ... the list goes on Favourite manga: Bleach, Rosario Vampire, Elfen Lied, The Breaker, The Breaker:New Waves, Tsukihime, Love Hina, Mahou Sensei Negima, Unbalance x Unbalance, Tasogare Otome x Amnesia, Detective Conan Favorite LNs: Toradora, Campione, Overlord, Mahouka, Seirei Tsukai no blade dance, Monogatari series Favorite anime: K, Bleach, Aoki hagane no arpeggio, Code geass, Hellsing, MGL Nanoha, RWBY Favorite games: Tsukihime, Fate/stay Night, Melty Blood, Warcraft, Transistor, Homeworld 2 Favorite characters: Ichigo, Mizore, Aisaka Taiga, Shiki Tohno, Arcueid, Negi Sprigfield, Evangeline A. K. McDowell, Neko(K), Anna Kushina, I'm not a man of many words(when I'm not writing, that is. Then I apparently simply can't stop... how strange) Favorite quotes(will be built upon): "Brains are stupid when in idiots." Made by a friend of mine going by the name of volster. "I head something, but I can't hear anything" - Gavin Free of Achievement Hunter "Diplomacy: telling people to sod the bloody hell off while having them looking forward to the trip, once they've asked you for proper directions." “Oh," the girl said, shaking her head. "Don't be so simple. People adore monsters. They fill their songs and stories with them. They define themselves in relation to them. You know what a monster is, young shade? Power. Power and choice. Monsters make choices. Monsters shape the world. Monsters force us to become stronger, smarter, better. They sift the weak from the strong and provide a forge for the steeling of souls. Even as we curse monsters, we admire them. Seek to become them, in some ways." Her eyes became distant. "There are far, far worse things to be than a monster.” - Dresden Files “There should be a rule against your own inner monologue throwing around that much sarcasm.” - Dresden Files “I sometimes give myself excellent advice. Occasionally, I even listen to it.” - Dresden Files “...It's just one hour. Just one little hour. What could happen in one hour?” - Dresden Files "Sometimes my inner monologue annoys even me." - Harry Dresden, Dresden Files Notes to fellow fanfiction writers: When reading I tend to turn into a Grammar Nazi. And when I'm like that, I sometimes turn out to be...not so friendly, and occasionally carrying a flamethrower for the blasphemy called novel I'm reading. As such, I ask of you not to feel insulted should I in a review start to rant about it. When I review my intention is to merely provide a constructive critic for the writer, not to flame them. Thus my sincere future apologies. Forgive me if I don't review when I favorite your story, or I don't immediately respond to your PM. As I often find myself in a bind for time, I favorite stories so I can find them easier and continue reading them from where I stopped. Mostly I review stories only after I read a couple of chapters when I believe I have a grasp on how the characters are behaving, what could possibly happen next, and when I can determine the author's writing style. Thus, if I don't review right away, please don't take offense, as it's one of my quirks. Thoughts on fanfiction: I love fanfiction. That should be somewhat obvious as I joined the community, and the evidence is the page you're reading. There is something that keeps bothering me more and more over the years as I read various stories on FF. Well three things, but one is much more annoying. And that is...clichés. Now I admit, thanks to our exposure to various books,TV, games and the Web it's pretty much impossible to avoid having clichés in your story. That is not the problem. The problem is that multiple authors use the same clichés without...ah how do I say it?...without being subtle?...yes, for lack of a better expression without being subtle in using the clichés. For example, there are numerous Naruto fics with a powerful prejudiced civilian council, and Naruto is abused by the villagers on a daily basis, but he still persists, and he finds this one special person who makes it all better... and Harry Potter fics with blatantly obvious abuse of Harry by Dursleys, manipulative!Dumbledore, backstabbing friends, being dosed by love potions and that one special person that makes it all better... I think you can see where I'm going with this? Now that's not to say that the clichés can't be used in stories. On the contrary, some of my favorite stories here on FF have some of those in them, almost flawlessly worked into a story making it interesting and making me want to read more. Note how I said some of them. The issue is when an author stacks the clichés one atop other and then shows them all off in an over-the-top manner that makes me want to facepalm at least...there were even some that made me wish something like brain bleach existed. My point...eh didn't intend to turn this into a rant but whatever... Don't be so blatantly obvious in using clichés and don't stack them one another in such a manner. Not only does it tend to be offputing, it's becoming more and more unoriginal. The second part that annoys me from time to time...harems. Now I think I need to clear up what I mean here. I consider harem a pairing of one character with three or more characters of the opposite gender. I don't mind the idea of the main character having such a relationship. On the contrary, several of my most favorite stories are can be considered harem stories. No, my issue is the size of the pairing. the topmost believable number for members of a harem(MC not included), and even then I'm stretching the term believable, is six(6). Any more and it becomes gotta' catch 'em all fic, rather than a true paring. Even then I'm not to keen on such a large number. The reason? The development of the characters in the harem, the relationship with the MC and each other is difficult to portray even if there are only 4 members. With six members it's a true challenge for a writer to have full-fledged characters be in such a relationship, and to have in develop naturally. There are those who pull off harem stories masterfully however and it's a joy to read their stories. Hell, a couple of them go over what I consider the upper limit of 6 members, and still make it believable and make you want to see what happens next. However, even then when there are less than 6 members I found stories where there is little or no development of the characters in the pairing with them being portrayed as their canon selves(who would hardly accept being part of a harem) or behaving like an OC rather then staying true to their personalities. Add that to the fact they are all inexplicably in love with the MC without any proper buildup to the emotions and it quickly grows offputting. And as to why I put the limit of 6... well harem or not a relationship implies...physical activities let's call it. And to have more than 6 the MC would need to have a godly amount of stamina to keep their partners satisfied. And while it's mostly justified, some stories have their MC as nothing more than a "puny human" let's call them with no indication of having such levels of stamina/endurance/strength... I do think that's something many FF readers will agree with. The final annoyance is...*drummrolls please*...grammar. Yes I tend to admit to be a Grammar Nazi, but I'm perfectly willing to let minor mistakes go in a well written story. It happens to everyone. NO what annoys me are the stories that are full of grammatical errors, where they mess up the names of the characters, hell, where even the Titles and summaries of the stories are full of errors...and the sad part is that some of those stories that I could stomach to read through a chapter or two actually have potential to be great stories...it's just that no one wants to read a story riddled by such grammatical nonsense. Honestly people, do you not know of spellcheck? Do you not have anyone to review what you wrote before you posted it? Is it hard to ask for a Beta reader? To be perfectly blunt, the greatest annoyances are those authors who know the grammar sucks, they get advice in reviews on what to fix and how to improve the story and they. Don't. Take. It. I mean, even if they put forth an excuse that "it's my story. You don't have to read it." how can they stand to read their own work? Thoughts on crossovers: Now to make something clear right away. I don't dislike crossovers. On the contrary, I love them. A successful blend of two different 'Verses can lead to amazing stories that many love to read. Do note, however that I mentioned successful. I honestly forgot how many FF crossovers I stumbled upon that had potential, but absolutely no attention was given to world building, or any explanations just how a character from series A ended up in series B. That's even worse when the crossovers in between two obviously different worlds. For an example only I will mention Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings. It's blatantly obvious that the land itself is different, the cultures are different etc. So when you carefully consider these obvious differences ( and once again I state the following is example only. NO fanfiction with this idea was read and similarities are accidental) you still somehow have Aragorn, or Legolas or whoever magically appearing in Privet Drive, Surrey without any believable reason, while implying that the two worlds coexist as they consider it completely natural to walk in a part of a city that is clearly not part of their world. When I see this I can't do nothing but facepalm. Seriously, if you have an idea for this kind of a crossover, then develop it further, don't simply post what should be considered a rough draft as a story. Now to the next part. This is mostly focused on Naruto crossovers. Now I don't dislike Naruto as a series, but I have grown tired of it. Worse, a huge part of the crossovers follow the same pattern: An immortal Naruto somehow stumbles upon series B, and he steals the spotlight, is the most powerfull character and can do no wrong. It's becoming more and more annoying to see a bunch of this type of crossover when looking for a new story. That's not to say, however that I dislike all Naruto crossovers. On the contrary, there are some real gems out there, yes even including the previously mentioned cliché, where the authors put in real work to successfully integrate Naruto into the world to make it an interesting read. However this isn't limited to Naruto crossovers only, but rather any FF in which a powerful and experienced character from series A is thrust into series B where he promptly steals the thunder from the previous MC and fixes all that's' wrong in the world of series B. I would like to say that everything posted on this page (aside from the quotes, obviously) is simply my own opinion, nothing else. If you dislike what I think about some aspects of fanfiction, very well. Everyone is entitled to free will. I'm simply expressing mine. Any and all flames regarding said opinions will be ignored. |
