"She would always remember the overwhelming relief in his eyes, his posture, his words when he'd found her at the scene. His shoulders had actually sagged, and he'd reached for her hand with fingers that were shaking."

'Jane couldn't help himself, and he looked around as though he was searching for something. "Hm, well, I don't see any art thieves on our floor, and definitely none where you're standing." '

"Even more painful was the realization that she was correct in her accusations. And that if he lost her now, it was no one's fault but his own. Not Red John's, just his. A flawed man, too scared to cross the distance that had bridged them for so long."

"She was starting to wonder if they would ever be able to truly be free of the past. If they would ever stop being afraid of closed doors at the end of hallways or if long-forgotten demons would ever stop being resurrected."

5x17 Tag - "They had called a truce regarding Lorelei and Red John, at least for the moment. He had given in to her requests, and she had stopped looking at him like he was breaking her heart. He supposed he probably was - it wasn't the first time he had done so, and, unfortunately, it wasn't likely it wouldn't be the last time, either."

5x16 Tag - "Something flickered in his gaze, something that looked remarkably like pain, but she must've been imagining it. Nothing she said had the ability to hurt him. She had learned that the hard way."

5x15 Tag - "Once, what seemed like a lifetime ago, he had told her she was still looking for magic in her life. An ocean glittering with starlight wasn't exactly what he had been imagining, but it was a start."

"He turned his head slightly, nose skimming her hair until he found the delicate shell of her ear. "You have to admit - I have good ideas sometimes," he murmured, deliberately letting his lips brush against her sensitive skin. She didn't even bother to hide her shiver. 5x13 Tag - "He had discovered there was very little he was unwilling to do to make her stay, no trump card he wouldn't play. If it came down to it, he would have pushed her against the nearest wall and kissed her until she promised never to go. Now that he thought about it, it was sort of a shame he hadn't had to try at all."

5x12 Tag - "And speaking of good days," he continued, reaching for the bag he'd sat on the floor, "I feel as though a celebration is in order." He pulled out a bottle of gas station champagne, the five-dollar price tag still attached, and two plastic cups he'd snagged from the kitchen. Lisbon eyed the bottle dubiously. "I see you spared no expense."

Post 5x11 - "They were about to tread into some very dangerous territory, and though he knew it would do little good, it would make him feel better if she was within arm's reach." Jane/Lisbon

Season Four story, set immediately post Fugue in Red. "Then, suddenly, he realized she was his warm place, somewhere to seek shelter and comfort. It never crossed his mind that she would push him away." Rated T/M

5x10 Tag - "He stared at her retreating back for a moment, then returned to her office. On a whim, he pulled open her desk drawer. Naturally, he'd rifled through her things more than once, but not recently. Really, what the hell was she doing with a hammer?"

5x09 Tag - "She needed to wake up, though, or he was going to be tempted to do something very stupid, like move to sit next to her and ease her head onto his shoulder. Or, stupider yet, pull her into his arms. Still, he had let his hand hover, letting what he wanted and what he knew was best war in his mind." Jane/Lisbon

5x08 Tag - "It never failed to make him feel guilty, the tears he saw in her eyes when he was like this. Instinctively, he wanted to hug her, to tell her everything would be alright. Instead, like always, he used her and pushed her away, trusting that her loyalty would still remain intact. She hadn't disappointed him yet."

5x07 Tag - "Jane was waiting in her office when she pushed open the door, looking like he was full of nervous energy. She recognized his demeanor and it made her distinctly uneasy. The last time he had been in the building looking like that, he had told her he loved her and then summarily shot her."

Epilogue Added - Now complete "The question was: how much was he willing to sacrifice to save her life? If it was a trade, his life for hers, then there would be no hesitation from him. But, as he had learned, there were things much worse than death." Jane/Lisbon
