Author has written 1 story for Chronicle of the Black Company. I started reading this site mostly for Harry Potter and the Methods of Rationality, and have ended up reading several other Harry Potter fics mostly through a process of finding stories by looking through the favorites lists of people I liked previously. I don't have any intent of writing a Harry Potter fic myself, but I've started posting a Black Company fanfic (I'm surprised those aren't common). I've also got a lot written on a Glorantha fic based on a game I was once in, which I might post eventually, though I'd want to edit it a lot first. Black Company fic: I might be interested in having a beta or two, if anybody's up for the task. I'm pretty reliable when it comes to basic spelling/grammar stuff, but anybody who thinks they're good at pointing out clunky dialogue, clunky exposition, missing exposition, plot holes, or any of the other problems my writing does have could be very helpful. TeeTee963 is already helping a bit, but she's too good a friend and reluctant to be too critical of me. Also, I don't have a cover image for the story. Anybody have an image that's public domain or their own work that they'd recommend? - Various spoilers for Cook's series after this point - I mention in the short description that the main difference in my fic is that Soulcatcher in the south is like Soulcatcher in the first book; in canon, she seems to become progressively less competent and more vicious as the books of the south continue. No such development should be expected here. I may also have made Howler more competent, though admittedly he has moments of effectiveness and pathetic moments in canon, and moments of effectiveness and pathetic moments in my version. So I don't think I've done more than possibly change the proportions slightly. Other canon characters I mostly try to keep true to canon, though the amount of attention I give them in particular cases is usually very different from canon. Various O.C.s eventually appear. Other differences are mostly those that follow from my changes to Soulcatcher, and will increase over time. However, there are a few other tweaks; Cook is very inconsistent on how hard Taken are to kill, having them come back from being horribly mangled partial corpses when he wants them back, and having them seemingly die permanently from much more minor injuries when he wants to get rid of them. I've made the decision to make Taken (at least the original Taken; Lady's Taken seemed to be second-rate) consistently at the nearly impossible to kill end of the spectrum. Also, the way true names work at the end of The White Rose is really problematic, with the result that Cook himself never uses them that way anywhere else in the series. In the interests of logic, in my AU true names just don't work that way. Across the board I have made efforts to enforce greater consistency, though I'm sure I've introduced conflicts and contradictions of my own (which I'd love for people to point out in reviews). |
