Author has written 6 stories for Greek Mythology, Harry Potter, and Chronicles of Narnia.
I'm a professional spreadsheet wrangler and science geek who likes to unwind with a good crackfic, as a partial substitute for actually having a life. ...I'm probably making that sound worse than it actually is.
Currently recovering from what I've retrospectively identified as a minor nervous breakdown at a previous job. I'm now working for people who aren't 90% passive-aggression by volume, and life is good. Expect to see me write more stuff in future as my brain unfreezes.
These days I'm mostly living on the Sufficient Velocity forums, where I obsessively consume Worm fanfiction and occasionally contribute an omake or oneshot. If you're not familiar with the Worm web serial, go visit parahumans.wordpress.com now! (See you in a month.)
Fave fandoms:Harry Potter - the fandom that started it all for me. I arrived here via the story "Harry Potter and the Methods of Rationality", because I'm a geek. Up til then I'd avoided fanfiction entirely, on the grounds that it would probably take over my life. I was entirely correct about this. Buffy, Firefly and other Whedonosities. Pretty sure I've read every Xander Hallowe'en fic out there. (I recommend Chilord's "Echoes of the Fallen", which is damn good fiction let alone fanfiction.) Naruto. Ever had that thing where it seems you've read every good HP fic out there and you don't know what to read next and the Browse link just starts to call to you? "Click me! Click meeeeee!" I've never actually read Naruto canon, and yet somehow I've gotten through a few million words of Naruto fanfiction. Worm. Stumbled across this while browsing non-FFN fanfic sites. Took me about six months to get through canon, and I've never looked back. (Because then I'd realise how much of my life I've wasted and have a nervous breakdown.)
Pet hates:The "ability revealing potion" or similar tropes in Harry Potter fics. This is the one thing that absolutely guarantees I will hit the "Close Tab" button. Life does not come with a fscking character sheet. "Taijutsu styles" in Naruto fics. As someone who has actually studied more than one martial art in the past, these are generally physically painful to read. There are real differences between styles - for example, Karate punches are powered by centrifugal force of the hips and torso, whilst White Crane kung fu punches are powered by muscle elasticity, and striking styles like Wu Shu Kwan will allow you to work at a different range from grappling styles like Brazilian Jiujitsu. But most martial arts styles are not just "be like an animal", and the idea of some people not being suited to a particular taijutsu style is frankly bollocks. Non-ironic use of the Royal Canterlot Voice (in non-MLP fics, I mean). If your character are using words like "whence" in everyday conversation, you've taken a wrong turn somewhere. Also, "said" should not be used as a synonym for "aforementioned" unless you're filing a writ. Awesomely dramatic fics that end just before the really exciting bit. (This is less of a "kill it with fire" pet hate and more "how hard do I need to grovel".) Slash. If you're willing to write an actual gay relationship then that's fine, but please don't treat the characters as lego bricks that you can jam together any way you like. In a similar vein, there's a reason that the alt.polyamory FAQ refers to hot bisexual babes willing to join an existing het couple as "unicorns". True three-way relationships are not that bloody common in real life.
Pet likes:Subversive fiction, that turns an established truth on its head. For example that one HP fic where they were right to send Harry to Azkaban, and Sirius only finds out too late that he's possessed. Outside of fanfiction, I highly recommend the "Sundering" duology by Jacqueline Carey: it's a LotR-like story told mostly from the side of the notional bad guys. Fics where the stations of canon happen on schedule, but for completely different yet just as plausible reasons. Similarly, fics where magic / powers / whatever work precisely as in canon, but with a much better-thought-out explanation. Formulaic's Naruto fic "Konoha's Maelstrom" wins the prize here for completely upending my understanding of why Konoha appeared to irrationally hate Naruto. Headcanon: accepted. Rationalist fics, where the characters actually make a concerted attempt to munchkin the universe. As a wise man once said: all powers are haxx; if your power is not haxx then you are not munchkining hard enough. My current favourite is a fic that used the Goblet of Fire as the assassination device that it was clearly capable of being. (Being entered into a binding magical contract against your will? Srsly?) H/Hr. Guilty pleasure.
BBL, I think a fic just updated.
On that note, I owe an apology to the guy I offered to beta for and never got back to him. I was pretty out of it at the time, but that was just rude of me.
