I still have the hardcover book and accompanying cassette tape, but apparently the World Wide Web doesn't recognize those objects as real o.O Magic Tree House is a series I never read in order. I started with the Titanic book and hopped around from there. The Boxcar Children was only actually written by Gertrude Chandler Warner up through book 19, but it took me way too long as a kid to figure out that books 20-on were being ghostwritten by other authors, which is why they exist at all. American Girl's book titling format always humored my dad, and his favorite parody he liked to irritate me with was "Felicity Gets a Spanking." A Series of Unfortunate Events is the first book series I actually made an effort to read over and over, although I never really understood what it was about as a kid. (I should go back and re-read it sometime, it's been awhile...) Redwall was my first true fandom hyperfixation, although I didn't know that word at the time so I called it either an obsession or a "special attraction". Star Wars was where I learned about the Adult Fiction section in my public library. Also for some reason I stopped short of reading any of the EU books that took place past Luke proposing to Mara Jade. Rainbow Magic was the fandom that I created the most comprehensive lore AU for, and also the first fandom for which I wrote fanfic. The Girl Who Circumnavigated Fairyland in a Ship of Her Own Making was the first fandom I contacted the author for. She once made a funny quote about a freeze ray so I emailed her a meme made with a picture of her. She never responded :'( Septimus Heap is to date the only fandom I have ever written [bad] smut for. Doctor Who I probably never would've watched except my cousin forced me to—not that I regret it! My Little Pony technically doesn't count as a hyperfixation because I mostly just flirted with it for a few months and only watched five episodes total. It was also the only fandom my parents actively discouraged my involvement in lmao. Odd Squad is the one fandom I have promised myself to never truly leave, thanks to a Discord group chat and my favorite actor. Hamilton was weird, it kinda just came and went like Cotton-Eyed Joe while other things were going on. "DHMIS" is the fandom that ultimately brought me to Tumblr. Miraculous Ladybug I assumed was an obscure cartoon with a niche audience that happened to include my sisters, until one day on a whim I typed a query into Pinterest to see if there were any memes and was BLOWN AWAY by how many results I got. Teen Titans singlehandedly helped me endure an abusive internship and inadvertently helped me figure out I'm queer. Cyberchase is the first (used to say only) fandom that I enjoyed casually when I was younger (not to mention an actual member of the target audience), then rediscovered years later and made into a hyperfixation. The gap signified in the previous section by "nothing, age 21" was both when my depression was at its lowest and when I first started anxiety medication, both of which combined to make my executive dysfunction completely uninterested in any fandom. PSA: Mental illness is real, y'all reading this please drink water, brush your teeth, take your meds and talk to a good therapist! Gravity Falls was almost ruined for me before I ever even watched it by a TERF who cyberbullied me off of Pinterest (her username is gravityfallsgossiper, screw her), and even now I feel a sense of dread when I see or hear the name of Toby Determined's newspaper. Luckily that didn't stop me from eventually watching and loving the show! Sailor Moon is the first cartoon in this list that I haven't really hyperfixated over, but it's been on my bucket list for a long time The Markiplier fandom is my only fandom/hyperfixation based solely around a celebrity. Myst is the second fandom on this list I enjoyed as a kid and rediscovered later, and the first fandom my dad ever got me into, since he and I played it together when I was 6-7 and it wasn't until I was 11 he got me into Star Wars. Ironically, I added Myst to this very profile under the Favorite Video Games section when I was still a teenager but several years before I "rediscovered" it (i.e. actually got around to purchasing on Steam). If only younger me had known! ETA: as of 2023, it's also the first fandom I've ever attended a convention for! Undertale was for a long time the only JRPG game I knew existed. I was aware of the game for several years before I got into it and every time I saw an image or video clip from a 2D pixelated game I always thought "oh hey that must be from Undertale." Can you tell I didn't really grow up on gaming consoles? I literally had no idea what the classic Pokemon games looked like akdjejjsksks Omori and Rain World are, first off, the only two fandoms on this list grouped together, because secondly, they're the only fandoms I got into because of being in a different fandom. Shortly after joining the UTDR community I noticed there was a sizeable overlap with the community of a game called Omori, so I decided to play it. Then shortly after finishing Omori, a UTDR streamer I like started streaming Rain World, and MY GOD the community sucked me in not long after that. This whole thing is very strange for me bc normally it's hard to be hyperfixated on more than one fandom at a time, and if a new one comes along then the old one fades away, but there's been no sign of that happening here! Favorite Ships: Osclive (Odd Squad), Appledash (MLP:FIM), Aridante (Aristotle and Dante duology), Lams (Hamilton), Julerose (Miraculous Ladybug), Kemaline (Everything Sucks!), Raestar (Teen Titans), Creechnez (Cyberchase), Fiddauthor and Wendip and Mabifica (Gravity Falls), Amikoto (Sailor Moon), Zukka (ATLA), Alphyne and Soriel (Undertale), Suselle (Deltarune), Sunflower and Kimbrey and Baseball Bat (Omori), Ragequit and Sunstone and Slivermoon and Lilypad (Rain World), Buttonblossom (The Amazing Digital Circus) Fandom characters I have cosplayed, or dressed up as for Halloween: Matthias (Redwall), Luke Skywalker (Star Wars), Lady (Lady and the Tramp), Marcia Overstrand (Septimus Heap), Weeping Angel (Doctor Who), Olive and Oscar (Odd Squad), Disgust (Inside Out), Ladybug (Miraculous Ladybug), Inez (Cyberchase), Grunkle Stan (Gravity Falls), Sailor Venus (Sailor Moon), Undyne (Undertale feat. my now-husband as Papyrus), Catherine (Myst feat. my now-husband as Saavedro) Finally, do I have an independent novel in the works? Yes I do! I came up with the idea in early June 2018 while walking home from a Starbucks, and have been world-/character-building ever since while writing off and on, but I still hope to be able to write and publish it at some point. But for now, you can check out my deviantArt or Tumblr for a few rough draft excerpts! |
