Author has written 7 stories for Halo, Metroid, Elder Scroll series, and Mega Man.
If you're reading this, you probably only have one question:
What's going on with Negative Halo?
On the off-chance that you're a new reader, welcome! New chapters will be added on or adjacent to Thursdays.
But—and more likely—you're a returning reader, wondering what happened to the stories I wrote. The short version is: I took them down. Sorry.
The long version is that I'm replacing them.
A few years ago, I decided I should edit some of the Negative Halo stories. While they mostly represented the best of what I could do at the time, they were terribly uneven, containing both the best and worst writing I'd ever done. My hope was to fix them up to be a bit more palatable, while resolutely not fixing the canon. (I started writing these in 2003, so I made a lot of assumptions that didn't pan out. I wasn't interested in changing my story then, and I'm still not.)
So I reread them, started making some notes, tried out a few changes. Suffice to say, it quickly snowballed into a complete rewrite.
It still wasn't my intention to delete the existing stories and start over, but as I kept going I realized that the story would drift. A lot of the reviews people had kindly left over the years wouldn't match what was actually happening. And, more importantly, I didn't want to feel like I was a slave to the existing story beats, even if I didn't intend to change what happened generally.
So this is the result. I'm doing a complete rewrite. I've already done several chapters, so I have a nice little buffer going. And with things the way they are, I expect I won't have any trouble keeping up with my schedule of Thursday uploads. I'm also simultaneously publishing on AO3, so you can go find them there, too.
Okay, fine. If you're a returning reader, you probably have one more question:
If you're rewriting it anyway, why not change it to match canon?
The first part of the answer is that it would change too much. Negative Halo is a story about family, and a lot of what we now know about Sangheili society prevents me from telling it. The amount of work I'd have to put in would make it a totally new story, and I like the one I drafted years ago. I just want to make it better.
The second part is, I just don't care about canon anymore. I know I had a reputation for writing stories that fit into the existing canon, and I even did some literary gymnastics to make it work on the first time around. But seventeen years later, that doesn't matter to me as much as telling a good story.
If you want a story that matches canon, have a look around. I'm sure there are fics here that will scratch that itch. Or just read the novels and comics; Rtas only knows that there are enough of them now.
And yes, if you're wondering, I guess this means I've come out of retirement. Expect to see other new stuff, maybe.
