Poll: Which one of my Naruto fics would you prefer I focus on? Vote Now!
Author has written 7 stories for Star Wars, and Naruto.
July 20th: Stay tuned for an interesting update coming... Are we seeing my legitimate return?!
June 17th: Slowly getting back into writing by way of drabbles and miscellaneous fun stuff which I will likely post. If crack involving Lady Luck or Six Feet Under sounds fun to you, watch out for it. :)
April 3rd: Hey all, checking in to let you know I'm still alive, around, and working on my fics. I can't give an ETA on anything, but things have been moving, which is a huge improvement. If I owe you reviews, responses, or PMs, I promise I will get to them. You absolutely will hear from me.
January 21st: Not dead (yet), all! Still working on all of my stories, though Six Feet Under and Lady Luck are getting more attention. I really wish I had more to say, but my medical situation remains... sigh, let's just say bad. There's a reason I'm so drawn to the whole reincarnation thing. BUT always remember one of my favourite Gandalf quotes: "It is not despair, for despair is only for those who see the end beyond all doubt. We do not." You'll be hard pressed to get rid of me. :) Thank you to those that have stood by me for the past year, and to the newcomers who happen to chance by!
November 10th: Here's an update since a few of you still check back here: My health remains in extremely poor condition. I'm working with doctors the best I can to get myself sorted out, but it's difficult when no one knows exactly what's wrong. :( It goes without saying that it's been impossible for me to write any new content. I'm still interested in writing all of my Naruto fanfiction, so it'll get done one day. If my current readers happen to be around for that day remains to be seen, haha. 2014 has been a really bad year for me health-wise. Here's hoping I can get myself up and running for 2015.
October 5th: Sigh, here we are again, for anyone that happens to check back here. My health dive-bombed even harder, making it impossible for me to do any writing. At this point, I really need some help if I'm going to get anything done. If anyone is interested in being a beta for any of my stories, please PM me—I have the most inspiration for Six Feet Under, but I won't overlook anyone interested in the other two. I'm looking for someone skilled in grammar, willing to go through iffy plot points with me, and cracking the whip about canon characters being in character.
Beta found for Six Feet Under.
Lady Luck, Disciple, and hell, even Alternate Realities Suck, Seriously are still available if anyone's interested.
I'm very shocked that I need to post something like this. Guys, please DO NOT send hatemail on my behalf! I absolutely don't condone that kind of thing! I abhor it. If you think an author is doing me wrong in some way, please just PM me. I will speak to the person and chances are we will sort it out. There is so need for any kind of flames or hate. It's truly unnecessary and hurtful to all parties involved, myself included. Please, please do not engage in this.
I'm sonyat (a friend couldn't pronounce my name in highschool), or Sonya, if you prefer. I'm of the female persuasion and twenty-five. I'm, uh, somewhat ashamed of writing fanfiction at my age, but it's a lot of fun and a great way to practice my (very rusty) writing. I started writing fanfiction when I was thirteen, but dropped it years later in favour of writing an original novel. That novel can still be found in the deepest bowels of the Internet... coughFictionpresscough! To those who manage to find it, be warned! I was young, uneducated, and wanted to prove I could write a better vampire fiction than Stephanie Meyer. I'd like to think I succeeded in some way, aha.
I find fanfiction substantially more challenging than original works, so I've decided to come back to it. Plus, it's fun, with far less stress and pressure in comparison to original works. Maybe I'm weird like that. Currently I only write for Naruto. Concrit is my best friend. You will be my new best friend if you give me concrit.
If you haven't noticed, I really love the Self-Insert OC genre, heh.
I love to chat, so shoot me a PM if you'd like to discuss fanfic or Naruto! Want to bounce ideas off each other, or want advice/opinion on something? I'm your lady! I can be your idea beta or something. c:
I suffer from chronic illnesses and am considered disabled. I tell you this not to garner pity or sympathy, only so that you may understand that this is the cause of my slow or nonexistent updates. Blame that on my inability to update frequently, seriously.
I am also on AO3: datsonyat
Why do I write really cliché and overdone stuff?
I'm late to the party and I really like the ideas! Some of what I intend to write/have written, I haven't seen done yet so it'll be interesting to see how it plays out.
What you should know about my fics:
· If you are uncomfortable with F/F, M/M, poly, and the variety of other relationship types and sexualities that exist, my fics may not be for you as each fic will likely feature at least one of these.
· Kaguya will never see the light of day in any of my fanfiction, thus the AU tag on all of my stories. Sorry Kaguya fans, but I can't handle Kishi shoehorning in such a one-dimensional, awful villain. It's unlikely anything Kishi threw at us in the last year will be used much, if at all, in my fanfics. (I'm looking at you, Black Zetsu, you SOB.)
· I don't believe the first person you date/have a crush on is your destined true love. That's just not realistic. Most of my characters will go through various love interests—OC or canon—unless circumstances make it impossible.
We all know Sakura is by far the most popular female canon character writers use for the reincarnation shtick, with characters like Hinata, Rin, Ino, Karin, and Kushina taking a very far second place. Don't forget the fem!versions of male characters, too!
My challenge is this: Use one of the many unrepresented female characters! Characters like Shizune, Terumi Mei, Nii Yugito, Fuu, Mikoto, Konan, or Samui! There's a huge list of female canon characters that have yet to make it into a self-insert fanfic. I've toyed with some of these myself, but am in no place to take any more fics on with the trouble I have keeping up with my current ones. I would absolutely love to see these kinds of fics written!
Secondary challenge: If canon character inserts aren't your thing, I have something even more interesting. Instead of the usual OC replacing Rin on Team Minato, replace either Kakashi or Obito with your OC! Warning: I may begin to worship you should you do this.
If someone out there sees this and writes one of these, please send it to me! I'd love to read your work!
Naruto fanfic/self-insert pet peeves:
Disclaimer: I do not condemn stories that use these. In fact, I read many that use these and are still great stories!
Disclaimer Part Deux: I do heavy research and theorizing—emphasis on research!—before posting anything that is not an opinion.
· "All women have smaller chakra reserves compared to men." "Having large chakra reserves equals bad chakra control." "Being a jinchuuriki equals bad chakra control."
No. No, no, no no no. All of that right there is wrong. It is fanon. Nowhere in the manga does Kishimoto mention anything like these. Naruto himself just had bad chakra control, plain and simple. The manga pages will tell you this, the anime will tell you this, various websites deconstructing the scenes will tell you this. Ebisu told him that he was lucky to have large reserves due to how much chakra he wasted when performing techniques. Sakura was used as an example of good chakra control in that moment and was said to have smaller reserves compared to Naruto, but nowhere was it said that the two are correlated. Kakashi also mentioned in two separate instances that Sakura had good control and smaller reserves, yet no connection.
It was never stated that Naruto had bad chakra control due to large reserves or being a jinchuuriki, though I can see why these would be a problem for an untrained genin—not a competent chuunin, and definitely not a jounin.
The jinchuuriki thing is a tough one, but with the right training, the problem should resolve itself. All of the jinchuuriki shown did not present any difficulties in canon as opposed to what fanfics portray them as. The closest that comes to this is Jiraiya mentioning at one point that Naruto had a hard time controlling the Kyuubi's chakra—as all jinchuuriki would, regardless of specific bijuu, at one point or another. What about all the other accomplished jinchuuriki, as I mentioned?
Biologically, why would women have smaller chakra reserves? Tsunade is, at the least, quarter Uzumaki, if not half, and around just as much Senju, so why would she have small reserves? Her reserves need to be massive in order to accommodate her techniques and feats throughout the series. Should I mention that Sakura's would've grown larger with time and (especially) training? Rin marked 2.5 in stamina at age thirteen in the Second Databook (pretty solid for her age; higher than the geniuses PTS Sasuke and Haku), so her reserves were likely average/slightly above average, then blew up when she became a jinchuuriki. These misconceptions really bother me as I'm writing two female medic-nin, one of whom is a jinchuuriki. I am never going to write Rin or Tsunade with those kinds of handicaps.
If all female iryo-nin have small reserves, how can they be counted on to reliably heal? Good control will only take one so far. Why not just train men? Oh right, they all have bad control... Come on, no, just no. If you want to have it out with me over this, feel free to PM me. I'd welcome evidence that I'm wrong, though I'd be kinda pissed at the apparently very numerous bad translations I've been reading...
Note: I read an interesting theory on women having smaller chakra reserves because their chakra instinctively diverts to protect their reproductive organs. Okay, cool, interesting, but tell me, why don't males have the same luxury? Because of external parts? Surely chakra through evolution can find a way around issues with heating/cooling in order to protect the man. Can you imagine if this theory included dudes and made it so their junk couldn't be injured by way of chakra reinforcing that area too? Or, at least made it less painful? I'm becoming unprofessional, but I think you get my meaning, aha. (Seriously, crotches made of diamonds, cheap shots no longer a thing! Someone make it happen! Okay, I'll stop now...)
· Weak OCs.
I understand why people do it. They're afraid of the dreaded Mary-Sue. Civilian OCs I get, but why are the shinobi OCs remaining weak well into adulthood? A weak adult shinobi isn't going to make it in the Narutoverse. How did they live to adulthood in the first place, assuming they take missions? This is a manga where teenagers are kicking ass. Why can't OCs do the same?
It's very possible to write a believably powerful OC. Make their training realistic, their ascent to glory hard-won and paved with tears and blood—give them flaws, give their super useful/powerful techniques devastating drawbacks. Are they an orphan, a clan kid, a genius, in ROOT? Maybe they have an eidetic memory? These all have perks and drawbacks. For example, a clan kid is going to have more resources to work from, so their power-up may come easier.
Consider all the ways to make it easier or harder for your OC to become powerful. Don't be afraid of it, because chances are you will be able to pull it off. I'm sick of reading reviews telling an author their OC is "OP" or "knows too much" or is a Mary-Sue. Are you kidding? A great majority of them aren't; people throw around the word Mary-Sue too easily. I'm not sure about everyone else, but I sure as hell don't want to read a story where the main character stays weak and lame for its duration.
· "Only Uzumaki or super geniuses can use fuuinjutsu!"
Stop right there! I'm not sure where this started, but that is incorrect and fanon! It's true, we don't see much fuuinjutsu in the manga or anime, and when we do, they seem to be high-level techniques. HOWEVER. Most people seem to gloss over storage scrolls of all things. These are standard fuuinjutsu that every shinobi should and DO know, along with explosive tags (though this one is debatable even to myself, still). If a shinobi is out on a long-term mission and is in dire need of supplies, what do they do? It seems foolish to not learn basic sealing technique. I have a hard time believing every shinobi in a village goes to one seal master to have all of their seal-work done. That is putting far too much trust in a singular person that could turn traitor or give away your secrets. It is very likely basic sealing techniques are taught in the Academy. Please check out "Generic Sealing Technique" on Narutopedia. Tenten, who is made to be the "average girl" of the series, is actively and easily using simpler fuuinjutsu at age eleven/twelve with no prior training. Countless others in the series also use personalized storage scrolls. Does this sound like something only an uber genius or Uzumaki can do? (Please note I am only referring to very basic techniques here, nothing higher.)
Status of stories currently in progress
Starting Out at Six Feet Under (Rin Self-Insert)
Chapter 4 50% complete. Updates sporadically for the time being. My favourite brainchild, the product of shooting up in bed at 3AM with an idea that refused to leave me alone.
Beta: Unknown at the moment, but there are volunteers!
Two deaths parallel to each other and one reincarnation that never should have happened. Then again, was it a rebirth in the first place if they never truly died? It's just too bad Jenn was never a big Naruto fan. Becoming Rin isn't exactly the easiest thing, especially when you're supposed to be dead and not the host of an unhappy demon turtle that's being hunted from all angles.
(To be expanded upon in future)
Final pairing: Check out the authors in my favourites list and you'll find out...
Fate is cruel, Madara knows this.
Disciple (OC Self-Insert)
Next chapter 40% done. Updates sporadically for the time being. Let the angst flow through you.
Beta: Unknown at the moment, but there are volunteers!
Born and raised in a cult that worships the Sage of Six Paths, her only goal in life to awaken the Rinnegan, Akane didn't stand much of a chance at normalcy from the beginning. She remembers nothing from her previous life, having only brought a bounty of Yin chakra and some creepy tendencies.
(To be expanded upon in future)
Final pairing: (Mostly) unrequited OC/Obito. Otherwise known as "what happens when obsessive, delusional, and in-denial yanderes collide".
Kiyomi remembers being far too late by the time she figures out a man with eternal kaleidoscope eyes, wreathed in the apparition of a god, has offered her mother a better choice.
Becoming Lady Luck (Tsunade Self-Insert)
Chapter 2 25%. Updates sporadically for the time being. Oh, the perils of becoming someone you really don't want to be.
Beta: Unknown at the moment, but there are volunteers!
She never wanted to be anyone important, yet here she is. It never occurs to her that she can be anyone else other than Tsunade. For better or for worse, Tsunade will shoulder the burden of her new life, the future murky now that she is... who she is. Or is it? Perhaps this was the universe's plan all along.
(To be expanded upon in future)
Pairings undecided. Tsunade's life is too long to settle on a single pairing without seeing the chemistry between all the people she could be paired with.
Perhaps contrary to popular belief, there are consequences to being reborn with an adult’s mind, especially when you're stuffing it into the body of an infant.
Alternate Realities Suck, Seriously
Chapter 3 is about 70% complete. Updates randomly. Expect the terrible grammar and mistakes to remain until I get around to editing or rewriting this sucker. Still on my list to finish.
In which the Gedou Mazou goes haywire, and fate seriously hates Obito and Nagato, taking the rest of the Akatsuki along for a ride to the Real World. The four college students that just happen to occupy their last geographical location aren't very happy with the situation either. One, there's a language barrier, two, they have no money (and no chakra). Fourteen people living in cramped quarters made for three is the new Hell on Earth. Expect hilarity. Fuminori is Pein's biggest fanboy, Saya is terrified of everyone, Rick wishes Hidan had remained in that closet, and Sara just wishes they'd help pay the goddamn rent.
Pairings possible; there happens to be a Kisame/OC request that it seems I can honour. Other than that, free game.
The reason behind no yaoi in this story: It's a parody and would not do any of the situations that would lead to yaoi pairings justice. Too much bad Akatsuki yaoi out there, and I will not contribute to it. Sorry folks.
Alternatively named: "I got sick of reading Akatsuki go to the Real World fics wherein the OCs are rich, teenage fangirls"
All hell broke loose in a way only Deidara could achieve.
“You’ll bring the roof down you imbecile!”
“Aw really? Not this shit again!”
“No bombs inside, brat!”
What's going on with you? Why hasn't your stuff been updated in forever?
Okay folks, it's time for me to talk about my update schedule. Despite my goals for updating every week or every other week, sometimes I just won't be able to make them. Real life can be demanding. I live with several illnesses and take medications that can knock me straight into next week. I don't want to release half-assed chapters I'm not happy with. Unless I give notice on the story or they disappear from status of stories in progress, they are still being worked on constantly. I never stop thinking of them or taking notes. Even if you haven't seen an update in a long time, feedback in all forms helps me get motivated and working at a regular pace again (read: PM me, haha)! Thanks for your patience and understanding, fans! (side note: I have fans. Is this some weird alternate universe?! I love you guys. c;)
