Author has written 14 stories for Mario, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Pinocchio, and Fantasia.

October 25th, 2020: I'm thinking of moving to... Washington D.C. Yes. My studies in school were oriented towards political science, so it makes sense. I'd also have easy train access to the cities on the U.S. east coast: Boston, New York, Philadelphia. I'd like a job related to East Asian policy (it's what I studied...) but even if I had to work at a cafe or something the whole time I think I'd be happy just to be in a place where so many people come and so many things happen. I am a city person...

October 16th, 2020: LASIK recovery continues. Meanwhile, I think I know the city where I'm going to move next, to get into the next chapter of my life-- if I still feel generally this certain by next week, I'll let you all know. It's not Chicago.

October 9th, 2020: I survived LASIK, and Vertical Ascent is finished. On the first topic, I'll refrain from making jokes or commenting in general-- my vision is still in a process of recovery and requires hourly eye drops (all part of the regular process)... I was a bit nervous, but things are going well.

On the topic of Vertical Ascent, here's what I'll say for now. Verdant Twilight and Vertical Ascent were deeply personal projects, personal to the point that while writing both I felt like pretty much no one would like them, but that they were worth me writing anyway. As it turns out, these stories are arguably more popular than my other works. It's a little miracle to me that they were enjoyed so much. Considering this, Vertical Ascent continued on that deeply personal path, on into a realm of esoterica that I believe can be interpreted (and may even be generally laid out in summary in Chapters 32 and 33), but requires its apparent obscurity the same way more difficult literature does such as the second part of Goethe's Faust or Ulysses. I am not claiming to approach these works in mastery, but was indeed influenced... even if I have not read the former.

Now, what's in the future? Nuclear Phantasy is still owed a Records page. I am toying with the idea of an interdimensional short story follow-up to Mario's Crowbar. Other than that... I would like to embark on my own original creative efforts, but I have been saying as much since the end of Mario's Crowbar, back in 2017. We will see. Who knows, there might be another fanfiction in me. Though in this case as one came in 2016, and another in 2019, the next may not be until 2022...

David88, would you PM me with your "main" fanfiction account? I would like a more definite way to stay in touch, in the case I don't post chapters here for awhile. For anyone else reading this, feel free to PM. Good luck everyone.

October 6th, 2020: A small disclaimer. I'm going in for LASIK vision correction this Thursday. On the day of the operation I'm not supposed to look at any screens, for the sake of healing eyes. I should be cleared to use computers and phones again by the next day (Friday) but there's a chance I won't... in which case the VA epilogue might be a little delayed.

October 2nd, 2020: No Vertical Ascent chapter today. Next week is the Epilogue.

I feel stuck back at my parents' house again. I don't know where I keep going wrong that I end up back here, feeling crappy. I'm not supposed to be living here. I should have a good job. Can I blame this on COVID? Is some part of me inherently lazy, and can't do what needs to be done? Why can't I ever tell what "needs" to be done? I just read a scary thing in Jung about people who live in their "infantile surroundings" endangering their psychic health. "Life calls us forth to independence, and anyone who does not heed this call because of childish laziness or timidity is threatened with neurosis". That's lovely. Am I childishly lazy or timid? Damn, I wouldn't like to think so. I don't want to divulge too much of my private life here, but I can say I've been struggling and making effort for the last eight years or so. Yet I keep ending up back in a depressing small town.

How can we put forth such efforts that don't seem to pay off? I feel like I'm always missing something. Writing VA has been part of exploring that...

September 25th, 2020: The trip to Chicago was really really good. I might write on that more later. Meanwhile: the Nuclear Phantasy "Records" page is developing, that being the notes page at the end that'll talk about some of the stuff that happened in the world after the end of Nuclear Phantasy. It's now amusingly clear that NP was really the quite narrow prologue to a much grander sci-fi epic-narrative.

I suppose NP covers up for that by technically spanning ~30 years of time & events if we count the beginning of the narrative as the 1980s and ending in 2014. There's also really "big deal" important things in NP's background that deserved more detail but were not really covered, such as the Shroob wars.

September 20th, 2020: I'm feeling good-- I'm going to take a trip to Chicago, maybe my favorite city, tomorrow. I haven't taken a trip since COVID really got going back in February, and if I don't take a trip for a long enough time, I feel a bit lousy. I'm sure a lot of people would agree on a similar feeling. Meanwhile:

Using Songs as Chapter Titles: I've been doing this for a while and I've written about the "philosophy" behind it before, but I'd like to dig into it with regards to Vertical Ascent. With each story that I've used song titles in, the choice of songs has gotten progressively more purposeful. To recap generally, I'm going to quote from my October 31st FF entry of last year--

"Vertical Ascent's predecessor story, Verdant Twilight, was actually my first fanfiction to use songs as chapter titles. The idea first came for use in Mario's Crowbar, but Crowbar was on hiatus at the time (the transition between Part 1 and 2) so the first chapters to be named with songs ended up in VT. VT's songs are mostly embarrassingly mopey pieces. Literally just "sad" stuff. Crowbar's Part 2 was better, with a soundtrack of something like a "melancholic fantasy" feel. Nuclear Phantasy steps away from the sadness/melancholy I think, with more a sense of "echoing history" and some psychedelia. Vertical Ascent's "soundtrack" has its own feeling, but I'll refrain from judging on what that may be for now."

Let's judge on it now. What can we make of the songs used in Vertical Ascent? I would venture first (and least importantly(!)) that they are higher quality songs, largely thanks to the music research I've been undertaking for the last two years. Verdant Twilight through Nuclear Phantasy's selections are largely in the realm of Pop, though Nuclear Phantasy starts to drift away from that (or at least, drifts into higher quality Pop). Vertical Ascent is mostly built up from songs selected from high quality albums... This was not really a conscious thing, but the fact is that most of the music I've been purposefully listening to for the last two years has come from highly regarded albums. Take that method how you will, but that is what has been happening.

But, as I wrote-- the critically-estimated quality of the songs are the least important aspect of them. I brought that idea up first, so we could get it out of the way. I would say more importantly, the songs are of a more complex nature, and have more psychological references. Vertical Ascent is the most "individual" story I have ever written-- it is almost entirely from the perspective and in the head of one character, that being Bowser. Recall that Mario's Crowbar and Nuclear Phantasy specialized in having a crowd of different characters (though Phantasy became almost entirely focused on Lumen T. by the end). VA is dealing with terribly hazy territory-- the thoughts of a depressed and anxious individual. Relatedly, VA has several chapters named after Radiohead songs, Radiohead being a band which perhaps is entirely about being depressed and anxious (Hahaha, but really,){Note below}.

Multiple chapters also come from Boards of Canada songs, Boards of Canada being a group I absolutely associate with psychological mystery, especially in regards to the fog of childhood memories. Their complex, constantly shifting IDM style goes very well with the complex, constantly shifting narration of VA (Not bragging about this, I'm trying to honestly label. I'm sure more than a few people would switch out VA being "complex and constantly shifting" for "a bunch of nonsense").

We've also got psychedelic content with Animal Collective and The Flaming Lips... Frankly, I think if you are making some sort of creation/art involving deep psychological investigation in the 21st century, it's going to have to feel at least a little "psychedelic".

Alright, this is getting pretty long now. I'd like to mention before I stop, though, that I tried to involve the content of the songs even more with Vertical Ascent than previous stories. I'm sure you noticed the slips of lyrics put into the chapters, implied to be played as bar music. I want to make it so the style and content of these songs follows the same "flow" as the story itself. If the story was a movie, those songs would be part of the soundtrack. (Also, if you were completely baffled by the content of VA's "Intermission", it's constructed from the lyrics of each chapter song going backwards and forwards in time by story order, with the songs in conversation with each other. There's a greater meaning to that, but I'm not going to reveal it at this time.) --Annnd okay, that's enough for now.

{Note: Though that's still a joke, since just calling Radiohead's work "depressing and anxious music" is to miss the epic and experimental nature of their work.}

September 3rd, 2020: Fiona Apple's new album "Fetch the Bolt Cutters" is fascinating. Almost a new "sound". We can debate on the usefulness of music critics, but this album was the first in ten years to get a perfect 10 score from the music critique website Pitchfork. Meanwhile:

Debate on the Usefulness of Music Critics: At least, my argument, in slight "favor". Favor, as in, I think they are useful. Art is more subjective than science, but I think it still has laws, or, speaking more fluidly, currents that are generally everlasting. In that sense, I consider Art as subjective as Politics-- there are no "hard" rules {Note below}, but there are methods of construction that make for a better final experience. "Is the Community on fire?" & "Is this Art completely unsatisfying?" are twin Bad Conclusions in this case. (And Art that is unsatisfying "on purpose" is then looping around in being satisfying again, but that's an argument for another time.)

(And please note Art in this case refers to virtually all kinds of creations, whether Drawings, Film, Literature, Music, Paintings, Poetry, etc.)

Music is perhaps more difficult to determine rules of "satisfaction" from than the other forms of Art above, but there are still realms of consensus. An album that consists of glass shattering for six hours is not likely to be satisfying to nearly anyone. There are songs that appeal to a greater number of people, and there are songs that appeal to the greatest number of "experts"-- those that have spent more time in their lives dedicated to the love of the Art Form. You can call it respecting your musical elders, in this case. And I have learned a lot by doing so.

Of course, you're going to enjoy certain stuff personally much more than others. Neon Indian's "Era Extrana" is one of my favorite albums, but critically it is rather ignored. Now, I'm not going to say "Because I love Era Extrana, it is one of the greatest albums of all time, and the critics only have their personal, irrational opinion". There is a powerful consensus and kind of knowledge involved even in musical critique-- one of the most fluid and hard to define art forms of all. Here, I believe intuition through experience becomes a powerful tool.

{Note: And yet still there may be hard rules/laws behind human society and art, but if they exist they are either extremely obscure (Hegel, Jung, and a small gaggle of others trying to explain stuff) or outright impossible to determine imo.}

August 27th, 2020: I imagined I would do this weekly recommendation thing, but I don't think it's too useful. It's better to know people specifically, and to be able to recommend stuff-- theory in the August 12th entry is the search for common ground in that you (probably) like reading what I write, so maybe you'll enjoy what I enjoyed, etc. It's not that smooth, though, I'd guess.

Updates continue to roll out, next should be tomorrow.

August 12th, 2020: I think I've got the ball rolling again-- story-wise and personally. This Saturday will be another Vertical Ascent chapter, while in my real life I'm eyeing several potentially appetizing job opportunities.

-This week's media recommendations-

Reflektor (Arcade Fire - 2013): I listed this in the May 9th entry below as one of a trio of 2013 albums I enjoyed. Turned out to be one of my top favorites ever. Much of it is an epic, rousing rush... until you get to the second CD and enter the underworld, which holds its own surprises. Very nice references to Greek mythology, especially the legend of Orpheus and Eurydice, here.

Uncut Gems (Safdie Bros - 2019): A rush of a crime thriller where the movement and tension pretty much never stop. I heard someone call it a 2-hour anxiety attack? I don't think it's that rough, but maybe I'm just used to shocking situations in movies. I dare to say this is Adam Sandler's second "great role", after Punch-Drunk Love (2002). Available on Netflix.

Dark (2017-2020): The third and final season released recently. A good contender for greatest time travel story ever. Besides a solid, momentous plot, it features beautiful gothic (?) cinematography and excellent choice in music. Available on Netflix.

August 3rd, 2020: Hello, hello... Got a new VP out. I've got like 5 chapters drafted, but I'm not going to make any promises regarding an update schedule. I'm in a very complicated place right now. I was rejected for an important job interview some months ago, and have been floundering in terms of life direction and next job.

Nuclear Phantasy's epilogue will be coming out on Wednesday, anyway. I'd like to do updates on Fridays from now on, but I'm taking a trip from Thursday to Sunday, and I won't have a good time to post this Friday.

Best of luck, everyone! I hope you find peace, somewhere, somehow.

Hello, I am Magikoopa981! Thanks for visiting!

Some of my work is mature (violence/horror), so please make sure to check the ratings on stories!

Deviantart Stuff:

The map of the Mushroom Kingdom and overall Continent for Mario's Crowbar and Hell's Uprising is available on my Deviantart account. Google "deviantart Magikoopa189" and my page will be the first result! (Also available is the map of The World from The Mushroom Kingdom.)

Story Map Sorted by Universe:

A Note: This list of stories is merely a convenience. These universes are separate and it is not necessary to read certain stories in order to understand others.

C Universe

Stories In This Universe: Mario's Crowbar and Hell's Uprising, happening somewhat concurrently.

Mario's Age: 38-46

Universe Bio: As far as is known, this universe was shaped primarily by the appearance of Smithos, a mysterious demon that conquered the world and centered himself in the Mushroom Kingdom 1500 years before the time of Mario. Smithos was eventually defeated, and the eventual breakdown of his world country led to the division of the countries in the modern C Universe world. Following these events, the C Universe has only become a darker and darker place, with the Mushroom Kingdom and Koopa Kingdom being swamped by weird mind control conspiracies and the Oho Sea Ternion (Sarasaland, Beanbean Kingdom, and Subcon/Jewelry Land) in an eternal struggle alternating between cold war and all-out war.

Mario's Crowbar (2007, 2013-2017) is a story about domino effects, death, and the uncertainty of existence. It was a kind of shabby story back in 2007 but it is now being rewritten so that there is proper grammar and to create an overall more cohesive and detailed read. Where "Hell's Uprising" kind-of focuses on adventures and fighting, "Mario's Crowbar" is more about being an epic with around eight to ten main characters. It doesn't try too much to focus on action, in fact, it isn't afraid to suddenly start discussing philosophy. It's currently my best work, in my opinion.

Hell's Uprising (2014) was another serious story, although a hopeful and more positive one compared to Mario's Crowbar as well as being first-person. It's about a revolutionary war in Sarasaland and the people that started that war. It's been cancelled, probably for forever, but everything in it is still canon for Mario's Crowbar.

G Universe

Mario's Age: 33 (*Mario's age is not indicative of his physical being in this universe) (Why do I include this age section?)

Universe Bio: G and H Universe are the humor universes. G Universe is generally "funny" like H Universe, but the characters are a bit different. For instance, Mario isn't quite as dumb, and Luigi is less cranky and more whiny.

Stories In This Universe: Mario Gets Coronavirus

Mario Gets Coronavirus (2020): After drinking two beers one night the Beer Fairy inspired me to write this. Wow!

H Universe

Mario's Age: 33 (*Mario's age is not indicative of his physical being in this universe)

Universe Bio: H Universe is recognized by its generally light-going and happy nature. While this makes it similar to M Universe (the universe the games belong to), H Universe follows laws of chronological and physical logic that M Universe does not while also inflicting odd personality quirks (i.e. Mario's stupidity) onto most of the characters present.

Stories In This Universe: HLSPPWTIAC and MABOAB, followed by Mario Hotel about a year later.

How Luigi Saved Princess Peach While Trapped In A Closet (2011): A fun little story about Luigi in a closet and Mario being an idiot. Might be an attempt to prove that I can be humorous.

Mario And Bowser On A Boat (2014-2015): Another fun little story about Mario and Bowser being trapped on a boat. That's basically it. Probably cancelled.

Mario Hotel (2014) is a lighthearted, silly story. I'm not putting any real planning into it, just writing it as I go along. It's meant first and foremost to be a humorous story, but I'm also putting some elements of other stuff in there. It's my big humor story. Probably cancelled.

K Universe

Mario's Age: 58 (*Age At Death)

Universe Bio: This universe's base event was the arrival of a group of fugitives to the Mushroom Continent 10,000 years before the time of Mario. From then on a complicated mess of events burst forth into history, all of which was pushed aside when Mario arrived on accident from another universe. The events of the world from that point on entirely surrounded him, and the results that spun from his death almost destroyed everything. Two sub-universes branched off from K Universe, one of which resulted in the complete eradication of Mario's influence on the K Universe, another in which the K Universe itself was Interrupted by a mysterious entity.

Stories In This Universe: The Mushroom Kingdom. What follows are two branching sub-Universes: K-Alpha, which ends with Wes and Celis' sacrifice, and K-Beta, which ends with an abrupt and mysterious Interruption, leaving the fates of its inhabitants unknown.

The Mushroom Kingdom (2009-2014) is a weird script-based story that has a bunch of problems with it. To put it one way, it was an experiment that went on for far, far, far longer than it should have. Basically all of the characters are OCs, and Mario dies in the first chapter. That should probably tell you everything you need to know.

N Universe

Mario's Age: 1-48

Universe Bio: Mario's world takes a more sci-fi slant as nuclear technology spreads across the world, including nuclear weapons. This establishes a Cold War where cheerful adventures are a thing of the past.

Stories In This Universe: Nuclear Phantasy

Nuclear Phantasy (2017-2020) is an attempt at a science fiction story, again following the multiple perspectives of a large cast of characters, but with each character getting their own chapter with backstory. Something of a sister-work to Mario's Crowbar, though far less bleak.

R Universe

Mario's Age: 45

Universe Bio: R Universe is similar to a mixture of H Universe and M Universe: it follows the general events of the Mario games while also following realistic logic (chronologically and physically). It is usually a world of neutrality, being neither cheery nor depressing, but things begin to take a strange turn with the Rot Slaughters.

Stories In This Universe: Rot takes place in this universe.

Rot (2014) is a murder mystery that was started when I was forced to be without my story notes for a little while (weird laptop breakdown). This is a story flashing disturbing imagery and being thematically about Mario beginning to feel like a puppet in his repetitious life. Cancelled.

V Universe

Mario's Age: 33-38

Universe Bio: Identical to the games for most intents and purposes. This is a universe where certain characters are able to feel the weight of their repeated failures.

Stories In This Universe: Verdant Twilight takes place over the span of two years. Vertical Ascent takes place three years after the end of Twilight.

Verdant Twilight (2016) is a story about depression.

Vertical Ascent (2019-?) is psychological self-warfare turned spiritual journey.
