In the beginning, there was paper and ink and a quiet place of my own to read. I could read my favorite books, then re-read them again when I wanted to visit my old friends. At the time, I thought things to be great. But I was naive. I didn't realize there could be so much more. A friend of mine asked me to read a story she wrote. It was a short fanfic about Tara and Willow from Buffy the Vampire Slayer. That got me hooked. A whole new vista opened before me thru fan written fiction. The characters I grew so fond of were no longer locked in stasis, no longer held to the original author's conception. Not only could I read about them in new stories that kept the characters alive, but the characters could now evolve, transform and expand into something I never would have conceived on my own. That, for me is the beautiful allure of fan-written fiction.
--I got my first taste of fanfic with Buffy the Vampire Slayer, reading mainly stories about Willow and Tara. I moved on thru various books and television shows and then, for reasons not clear, I stopped reading fanfic. But I have a renewed delight in reading fanfic once again. I enjoy reading mainly femslash or female-character based works but really will read anything that has some redeeming qualities. Most of the fanfics I like to read are ships between canon characters or more generalized action/adventure.--
--There have been a couple of people who have remarked that I haven't posted any stories of my own. Writing fanfic as an original author is not my strong suit. I find that I am much better at helping draw out the ideas of other authors in a way that can help them. Similar to how a sous chef would help a head chef. It is harder for me to envision an entire story from start to finish. I don't know when or even if I will feel comfortable publishing any fanfics of my own. Its actually been a long time since I put pen to paper, but you never know what the future will bring.--
--I encourage people to send me a PM if they think anything I have said in one of my reviews interesting, unclear, absurd or just plain wrong. You don't have to agree with my thoughts, just be civilized in expressing your own. Having a differing opinion on something often leads to the more interesting discussions. So again, feel free to send a message if you want to chat.--
--I will make an effort to leave a review with a mixture of constructive criticism and positive highlights for everything I read. It is the least I can do since you spent so much time writing it and then gave us the privilege of being able to read it. This is goes for works in progress as well as abandoned and completed stories.--
--If you have read this far down then there is probably some compelling reason you decided to look at my profile to begin with. Whatever that reason might be, I welcome you to send me a Private Message (PM) if there's something I may have said in a review that was unclear or you found interesting. Or even if it is just to say Happy New Years! Whatever the reason, I will respond to it to the best of my ability and with as little delay as possible.--
--Last thing I would like to say in this little intro is just how much I appreciate all the authors who are willing to post their work for others to read. It is no minor thing to take something you personally have created(albeit with the help of the copyright holder) and post it for others with the expectation that they will read it, scrutinize and dissect it, and subsequently critique your work. All the while knowing that not everyone will like it, not everyone will be kind in their remarks or tolerant of your viewpoints. To those authors who are willing to go thru that I give my sincerest thanks.--
For anyone who sat up late into the night because they had to figure out what happened next.
For all of you who said yes to one of the above I say this: "Don't cry because it's over, smile because it happened."
