(Spoilers for A Year in the Life.) With this short story, I'm attempting to fix a startling omission in the revival. Is it AU or simply some unaired scenes within canon? You be the judge. Fair warning, this doesn't solve the problems of the revival's cliffhanger, only compounds them. If you're gonna end in a cliffhanger, you might as well go all out!

Jess Mariano never met his mother. He grew up with only his dad, Jimmy, travelling all over the country, before finally landing in Venice Beach, CA, where they had been for five years now. This Summer seems much like any other, until one day when a blue-eyed beauty walks into a bookstore on the boardwalk, changing Jess' life forever.

It is what is. But it is, and that's the thing. It doesn't have to be perfect, it just has to be real. What would the revival have been like if Rory and Jess got together before it? Starts in early fall of 2015 through 2016 to Luke and Lorelai's wedding. It's good, but not necessary to read Harvest Moon first as this is a continuation of it. Disclaimer: Very ship-centric.

Takes place before, and would derail some of the events of, the revival. Rory drives to Luke's fishing cabin for some time alone after Richard's death. Only she's not alone. When she arrives she finds Jess there, fixing the place up for Luke.

Jess never went to Stars Hollow, continuing down a bad path living in New York, eventually getting punished with community service, where he happens to bump into a certain Gilmore fresh from her yacht-stealing escapades. Lit. Set around 6x03 and onwards.

What if Rory stayed in touch with Jess throughout his transformation into the guy we see in Season 6? Starts at 4x21: Rory has enough money for a cab and so doesn't call Dean for a ride home. Jess shows up too early and, while waiting outside her dorm, has a chance to re-think his proposal. Season 5 rewrite.

AU where Lorelai raised Rory in CA instead - Rory Gilmore is looking forward to one last peaceful summer in her hometown before heading off to Yale, but her plans are derailed when her mother offers Jess, a young runaway, shelter and a job. As she grows closer to Jess, her relationship with her boyfriend and her certainty about her future wavers. (More detailed summary inside.)

AU Lit. Jess raked a hand in his dark hair, annoyed he had even given a moment's notice to this girl. It wasn't his business to interrupt Tristan's horrible attempts at seduction. So she had one obscure book in her bag. Whatever. It was a fluke.

Post-series. The blows keep coming for a grieving, insomniac Spike as the ISSP plans to make an example of him to put an end to syndicate crime on Mars. A newly-motivated Faye hatches a scheme to help Spike (and herself, of course). Jet attempts to assist the pair meanwhile questioning the wisdom of his continued involvement in their lives.
