If you've arrived here by way of my Sherlock C2 community, I'll first say that I have been on the FanFiction site for ages -- since 2004. The name of my Sherlock C2 is meant as something of a joke but it has been a useful way to draw readers in to the really great stories and authors that are out there.
I initially listed it as a non-slash community but since I can't guarantee that without reading every story completely, felt uncomfortable making that declaration. For the most part, I'm not interested in OC stories and you'll find relatively few listed.
My favorite story in the Sherlock category is Things We Lost in the Flames by O'Donnell. It is a truly remarkable story that deserves more attention.
At one point I reviewed a lot -- nearly 1900 times according to my stats page. Absurd, I know, but indicative of my rather obsessive ADD personality. I can't do that anymore but do like to encourage good authors with a review now and then and I do appreciate authors who leave a 'thanks for the review' message. I'm definitely more inclined to review their works on a more regular basis. It's not absolutely necessary, certainly, but it is nice.
Also, I would like to apologize to any followers of my former LOTR C2. I know I may have disappointed some of you when I deleted all the stories from that community last year. All I can say is that a few years ago, there were two major tragedies in my life which made me lose interest in things for a very long time and I ended up deleting all those stories during a particularly dark time.
Like many of you, I wrote 'fan fiction' in my head, wrote some actual stories of my own, grew up, got on with life (though I regret never going to college) and then, succumbed to the lure of fan fiction for real when the internet made sites like this possible. I like to write but for now, at least, am content to read the imaginings of others.
Also, like many of you, I have always been rather obsessive about my interests. They've varied over the years, but my last obsession was Lord of the Rings. Of course, it wasn't all about the movies and the actors. I have, after all, read those books four times since I was in junior high. Some of my very favorite stories in that fandom are still listed under my 'Favorite Stories' list and if you haven't read them, I recommend that you give them a try. There are some amazingly talented authors in the fandom. There are also a few Star Trek/Sherlock stories on my C2 and Favorites list that I think you would enjoy.
Truth is, I am very late to the Sherlock fandom and actually, only saw my first episode less than two months ago. Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman are so perfectly cast! I honestly just decided to watch it on a whim, on a day when I didn't have anything else to watch. Of course, I fell in love with the show from the very first episode or my C2 wouldn't have come into existence. I am already re-watching all said episodes.
And while I am a prolific reader, I cannot claim to having read all the stories on my C2. Some, certainly. But...I do read enough of each one to decide if the quality level I expect in a good story is there and I feel confident that I know a good story when I see one. I scour the site by all sorts of ways, look for my favorite authors own favorite authors, and such. It's a pretty foolproof way to find great stories.
I am quite a stickler for the basics -- spelling, grammar, punctuation, etc., and I'm usually embarrassed when I find the ones that I make myself. A story that presents well in those areas stands out immediately and I am much more apt to read it. I do have a major interest in Sherlock angst and hurt/comfort, as you may have already noticed.
Generally, I avoid stories that are overly explicit, gratuitously or unnecessarily violent, amateurishly written, with characters that are too out of character, or that have a lot of swearing. The fact that I can filter such elements out on this site appeals to me, and is one of the reasons I would rather read a well written fanfic than wade through most of the books I find at the library.
My life is pretty busy and while I love to read, I generally don't have a lot of time to review, so I am sorry about that.
Hope that satisfies your curiosity a bit. Thank you for stopping by!
