I have been writing fanfiction for nearly seven years—since I was 15. It is by no means a perfect medium, and plagued perhaps more than most by the question of what is appropriate or inappropriate, authentic or problematic, in art. But fanfiction is also a wonderful way to find a community of people who love the same stories as you; and to explore and discuss serious ideas and questions through the best of mediums—story. It's also almost as old as literature itself. Think of Ovid's Heroides. Fanfiction, like nearly all literature, is a form of allusive retelling.

A note on Out of the Woods I - There is a translation! Yes, you heard right. The wonderful plumebleue has been translating my fic into French, and it is up on the blogging site Skyrock, only apparently I can't put the link, so I'll "spell" it for you: hobbits-tale, then there's a dot, then skyrock, and finally .com. If you speak French, then this will be perfect for you. If not...still go check it out because it has pictures and gifs and all those amazing colourful things that, great as this site is, you just don't find here. Book recommendation of the month, May 2021: You ALL need to read Maggie Stiefvater's Raven Cycle and spin-off trilogy. It is a thoughtful, fantastical and inspiring urban fantasy, featuring cars, ravens, and tarot, with compelling, quirky and diverse characters, which insightfully explores a range of real-life issues. Not a hint of moralising in sight. Stiefvater's social media accounts are also endlessly entertaining and thought-provoking—she is a very interesting person. This series has immensely broadened my view of the world and the way I think about literature—I can't recommend it enough.
