I don't write, I only read. But that I do good and with a lot of time to use on it... :-) No, seriously: I'm a huge fanfiction fan, especially when it comes to my favourite TV shows like Farscape or Babylon 5, Stargate or even Star Trek: Voyager (liked the characters, not so much the show).
Strange, though, is the fact, that some of the best pieces of fiction I've ever read are Buffy- or Angelverse fics (they also got me started in terms of fanfiction-reading). Somehow the (female) characters of these shows seem to have tons of potential for great fiction. Still, I've only recently discovered that there are simply amazing stories out there for most of the really good TV shows - taking that into consideration I wonder why many shows don't have better writing... All the creators would have to do is take a look at some of the wonderful pieces of writing on the net or maybe give some of the great fanfiction writers a shot at writing some scripts or outlines for their seasons on TV...
Every story that's longer than 40.000 words gets my attention, as long as it ships one of my favourite pairings (and I've got a couple of those...).
Buffy/Angel and Farscape are the TV Shows which I enjoy reading related fiction the most. Interesting (for those very, very, very few of you who'd like to know) enough to add might be that I only like female slash fiction (Cordy, Faith, Dawn and Willow are my girls in that Universe) when it comes to Buffy/Angel. For Farscape the things I find the most fascinating and intriguing are the John/Aeryn relationship and anything related to the Peacekeepers. I don't exactly know why, but the PKs have caught my attention from the first minute on. So -in my own and completely subjective opinion- the greatest Farscape fiction I've ever read is "Unrealized Peacekeeper" by OneEyed the DRD.
As for Buffy/Angel: By far the best piece of fiction I've read is "Independence" by Norwalker, who is probably my favorite Buffy author. Check this one out fellas, it's amazing! Heck, check all of Norwalker's stories out! Also "A brand new Sunnydale" by teeney8040 is a very good piece of work. Unfortunately the gread, great and utterly amazing "Buffy Real Verse" fiction (which shipped Buffy/Willow and Faith/Dawn) at chimerabloom.com is no longer available since the homepage went offline almost a decade ago - that's a huge loss for the FanFiction community, believe me!
For some odd reason most of the TV show currently on air don't hold the same appeal to me as the "old" ones did. Maybe because I've grown older or maybe because there isn't that much room left for ambiguity or different interpretations of specific scenes...? These days everything needs to be "in your face" on TV, leaving little room for subtlety.
The first show or movie in a very long time that really made me go online immediately after I finished watching was "Maleficent" - the whole concept of the movie strongly appealed to me. And sure enough, there are some great fics online which I've thoroughly enjoyed reading and following again.
Let me finish by giving special thanks and major props to all the terrific authors out there who keep writing these amazing stories! If you guys keep writing, I'll keep reading and writing reviews or mailing feedback. How's that for a deal...:-)
