For those interested, about 10 years ago in my final year of High School I wrote a mini-thesis exploring the appeal of Phantom over a century of audiences/milieus called Transformations of a Phantom - holding up a mirror to society. An abstract: "To examine a text and its transformation is to examine a society and its evolution. Over the last century, The Phantom of the Opera has endured countless mask changes. Whether as a figment of the Parisian upper classes' over-active imagination in Leroux's original Gothic novel, the nightmare of a threatened nation in Universal Studio's silent horror film, or the unbridled desire of a liberated people in Schumacher's most recent movie musical romance, The Phantom of the Opera has been designed to fill a void in people’s lives. A void through which society's needs and desires are exposed, but most importantly, a textual microcosmic void which holds up a mirror to, and provides a looking glass into the macrocosm of society." Also, for those interested, about 5 years ago I wrote a feature article exploring the literary genre of fanfiction.
