Author has written 7 stories for Harry Potter, and Miles Vorkosigan.
Hi, I'm Machiavelli Jr aka JJ aka Evans_above.
Yes, I've lately dropped off the face of the net, due to RL - no bad news, just no time for fandom. I'll be back from time to time.
As I've not been on my LJ for about five years, my Yuletide letter is here:
Dear Yuletide Writer...
OK, I've never done this before. And I was last on LJ when dinosaurs still roamed the earth, hence my letter is here instead – I know it's a mite awkward, but oh well.
First of all, pretty much anything in any of my fandoms will absolutely delight me. Fic! For me! So if you want to ignore everything below, that's cool. If you want to ignore the characters I've requested (where relevant) that's actually fine too.
Things I'd really rather not have (a short list, this):
Explicit slash. Slash is fine, where it's in character, but if you're going to write porn can it be het please?Character bashing. Complete blindness to the fact that every male character in the tagset for every fandom on this list (except Bob Howard) is more or less of a bastard. Non-consensual sex in any level of detail. Stream-of-consciousness. Second-person narration. Incest.
I almost want to add AUs, because part of what I love about all these fandoms is the world-building and sense of place and time, but then I start thinking of AU ideas I'd love, so just a request to tread carefully on those.
Things I love: Comedy, comradeship, snark, alternate character interpretations, missing moments, gen, world-building, unexpected characters being awesome.
Fandoms (signup details in bold, continued below):
Really almost anything will make me massively overjoyed. Pick a C19th person (real or fictional) and give me their first meeting with Flashy. Or Flashy and Elspeth being domestic. Or anything with their son Havvy who became a bishop, especially if he really is illegitimate. I don't think Bismarck and Elspeth ever meet in canon, but that would be epic. What some of the Indians Flashman met actually thought of him might be interesting. As might something from the POV of one of his lovers (and do feel free to add to the list). Crossovers with Victorian-ish things, whether in spirit or strict period, are fine, but I'd rather have incoming characters in Fraser's more or less historical C19th than Flashman visiting alternate universes.
I am aware that at least three people are self-publishing (ie. for money on Kindle Store etc.) further 'instalments' of Flashman; I don't think those count as anything more than not-very-good fanfic, and please for God's sake don't regard them as canon. I also have two pet theories about Flashman which may or may not be good plot bunnies:
No. 1, he's infertile – Havvy is, as he frequently suspects, not his, and he and Frank Grouard come across as equally desperate for some sort of family connection at the end of 'Redskins' (well, OK, Flashy's also desperate not to be tortured to death, but the two aren't mutually exclusive). Dunno what you do with this, other than maybe have Elspeth work it out (or, given that it's Elspeth, have it suggested to her by someone) and you just know she really wants kids...
No. 2, and I'm aware this could have unfortunate implications, is that Flashy's mixed-race, probably on his paternal grandmother's side (Mad Buck's mother, who is only ever referred to once, and then only as being long dead). This would explain why the Flashman family fail social-climbing forever despite being (until the start of Royal Flash) absolutely loaded and of apparently no worse descent than most Victorian minor nobility (the streak 'like dung beneath a rosebush' suddenly becomes far more understandable); more to the point, it explains why he's dark-skinned enough to pass for a Pakistani or Afghani for several months in a barracks. Whether it might also have anything to do with his kinda screwed-up (even for a Victorian) attitude to race relations I leave to the ingenuity of the author.
OK, this is an easy one: I'm honestly not that fussed about characters - if you don't want to use those three, that's fine. I'd quite like to know something about the PFY's background beyond what we get in canon, and Bob's conversation with Mo about children would be amazing. Or anything with Mo's background or training, such as how she got hold of that violin. Case-fic would be excellent if you feel up to it; between Equoid and what I presume from the title of Rhesus Chart, quite a lot of the things Bob has told us 'really' don't exist actually... do. What's the most outlandishly silly mythological construct, creature, power etc. the Laundry believes in? Or what about some of the cases Bob complains about at the start of Equoid, the ones where actually there really isn't anything supernatural going on? Crossovers here would be fine and shiny, if that's where your ideas are going.
As many or few as you like of the Mechs going about their business. Or some incident from Once Upon a Time (In Space). Or one of the origin stories that hasn't been written yet. Anything, really (spotting a pattern yet?
Strictly gen, please - I don't feel like any of the Mechs except Nastya have much interest in sex, and anyway I know them in RL and it would be a bit squicky.
