Stuff About Me
Hey. Name's Rob. I'm 25 and a college student at Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah. I read and watch way too much comics, manga, anime, and other assorted animated entertainment. I want to eventually write comic books for Marvel, specifically the "Amazing Spider-Man," and to eventually ascend to the loftiest of titles: Editor in Chief. Needless to say, he and various other Marvel comic book characters will show up quite a bit in my work. I like to think I specialize in crossovers between characters of different shows, books, comics, and other works of fiction, but I do original stuff too. The thing that I hate most about myself is that my brain works way faster than body does; I think of story plots and even dialogue for my stories far faster than I can write them. I already have ideas for about a dozen multi-chapter stories already and it'll take me a while to get them up here. A long while. A really long while.
As far as my style is concerned, I like to put my diction on a higher level whenever I can; I use big words as often as possible. I also like to put lots of pop culture references into my work. I think it helps it seem like the characters live in the real world even though in reality they don't. I also like to add as much comedy as the situation allows. With Spidey, that's all the time. I consider myself an eternal optimist in the sense of my writing. I don't like stories that end badly, in a sad manner, or in a way that it somewhat without what I consider to be proper closure. I'd like it for things to turn out right in the end. In my humble opinion, they always will. As far as author's notes are concerned, I usually don't like putting them in my work as I feel it compromises their structural integrity. If I ever feel that I must add an author's note at some point, it will most likely be at the very top or bottom of a story. If, however, you would like a specific question answered, I would be more than happy to answer it for you; just e-mail me. I'll do the best I can to explain it to you, within the boundaries of spoilerism, of course.
About reviews, I love them. Getting reviews really makes me want to write more often and gets me in the creative mood, so to speak. I consider it an honor when my stories get good reviews. If you do review one of my stories, I will usually write back, and maybe even review one of your stories. One thing I ask about reviews is that if it's at all possible, I want my reviewers to have an account and sign-in with it; it makes it easier for me to get back to you. If you can't, or don't want to, don't worry about it. I don't like flames (who does?), but, as a writer, I understand that they are an inescapable part of the critical process. So, if at all possible, please don't leave flames. I don't flame other stories myself, or at least I try not to. If I do, it's usually because it was really, really bad; stuff like excessive spelling and grammar errors, characters that act way out of character in an unexplained way, or a plot that is on par with "Pink Floyd: the Wall" or "Napoleon Dynamite" (you know what I'm talking about). Besides, I usually apologize right after anyway. In fact, I apologize in advance now.
Concerning other people, I hate it when people have spelling and grammar errors in their work. Proofread your stories before you post them! If you are trying to be a writer, then start acting like one. That being said, I look forward to higher quality stories from my fellow writers in this community. Also, I think it's weird when authors put in skits or conversations before or after the actual story. I just don't get it, and it makes the author sound schizophrenic. That's not to say I hate it, mind you, it's just that it doesn't make sense to me.
I am currently studying in college to become an editor, amongst other things. As such, I could use as much practice as I could. I would be happy to edit/proofread anybody else's work, before or after submission, at no charge. Just practice for me. I would be willing to edit/proofread just about anything by anyone. I give constructive criticism, but I am also honest and I don't sugarcoat it. If you are interested, PM me and we'll set something up over email.
Until the Hulk takes anger management classes, excelsior, True Believers!
P.S. For the record, I do not own any of the characters in any of the stories I will write, nor will I own any pop culture references that might be alluded to. However, I will own the plot of the story itself, as well as any characters of my own original creation. There, I said it. Happy now, you stupid corporate attorneys?
Current Author's Notes/Updates: 5/18/09: I swear that I am working on the latest chapter of "The Fang and the Web." I just have some other college-related things going on here, so please be patient. I'm going to start some other things regarding that in a bit, like polls and stuff. I'm also thinking of changing the title soon.
5/21/09: I have added a poll about Chapter 9 of The Fang and the Web, concerning the identity of "The Armored One." Who do you think it is?
3/31/11: Ok, I'm back from a long absence. Been taking a class from Brandon Sanderson on creative fiction writing. Because of class requirements, I'm about to unleash a crap storm of new material in a bunch of different stories in the next few weeks, so it may make up for a lot of my absence. As always, comments are appreciated.
Current Fanfiction Projects: The Fang and the Web, Chapter 9. Editing chapters 1-8 of The Fang and the Web. Going for a title change, and retroactively changing a character. Adding a prologue.
Rosario Vampire / Ultimate Marvel crossover: Tsukune turns out is a powerful mutant, and both Xavier's and Magneto's camps are vying for his allegiance. Spider-Man, the Human Torch and eventually the Ultimates are in for the ride.
New Marvel-esque original story in the vein of the original essence of Spider-Man, The Dynamic Taser.
Works I Have Edited: Only my own so far. Been in a writing group, so I've been editing and commenting a lot of their work.
