Great literature is simply language charged with meaning to the utmost possible degree. - Ezra Pound
Here is something you should be warned of when reading anything I write. I am awful. Awful to the one-millionth degree at finishing anything I start. There are several reasons for this, from my often unpredictable life, my run-away muse, lack of time when I have the energy, and energy when I have the time. Mostly however, my problem is that the ideas for the fanfiction I write, come to me in the middle of the night, and I will write myself to exhaustion until the light of day, and when I wake up, the idea that was so vivid has managed to escape me. And since I didn't get it all down at once, the plot has left me forever.
Or for a while anyway.
But here is a quick run-down of what I am currently working on (slowly, but surely) in order from most active, to still dead in its grave.
After reviewing some old fics that have piled up in my favorites, I ran across the author profile of a prolific authoress of whom I am totally, utterly and unyielding in awe of. She has done one of these do-dads to all of her stories. I have decided to do a small little…FAQS section of sorts for my newest story, The Lion and the Beast. You can always feel free to ask me a question personally of course, as I am always happy to respond to comments, as well as PMs. These questions, are just a few that are bouncing around in my head, and that I thought mind be nice to answer.
The Lion and the Beast FAQS as of 10 7 2013
Where did this idea start? I was lying in bed, half-way through a Dramione story that had gotten the wheels in my head turning (the best kind really) that night I came up with three ideas. The first of which, will never be written, or at least not on FFN, because of its basis and content, I would need a freer medium to write through, that is not as opposed to erotic fiction. The second is The Lion and the Beast. And the third, a three-part battle epic the focuses more on often ignored Harry Potter characters, while the Draco/Hermione relationship blossoms in the back ground (which still, may be written).
How come your writing is so awkward? A legitimate question, once in a blue moon, when the temperature is just right and the stars all align, I go through a process in which my writing style rips itself to shreds, and tries to rebuild. Sometimes for better, and sometimes for worse…Though at the moment I will blame it on my lack of writing anything for a very long time.
You tend to update in pairs, why? The thing about this fic, as opposed to Just a Little Bet, is that each chapter spurs along the next, usually, by the time I’m a thousand words into one chapter, I have already plotted at least half of the next. And for fear of losing it, I just keep writing.
This isn’t really what I was expecting… I know that the description makes it seem like it is going to be some mass, epic struggle between good and evil and their survival, and hiding what he’s done, and to an extent it will be. Because it has to be. However in the earliest stages of it, I really want to build up the image of Pure-blood society, I want to make it real, and tangible. I want to enforce this before later chapters. I am trying to build a world, a dream within in a dream – so to speak, to give the story substance. They don’t celebrate Samhain because I think Halloween is weird, they celebrate Samhain because that is a magical holiday it is what Witches and Wizards do. I have seen so many fics of this kind fall flat on their face because the author didn’t take enough time to make the world believable. I don’t want that to be the case with this one.
You have been posting a lot of one-shots: Truth. While writing this story, and getting back into the groove of things I am writing as many one-shots, and getting inspiration for challenges as often as I can. If there is less down time between the writing of chapters, the less likely I am to get stumped, and have this story never be finished.
What is your goal? There is a challenge that I believe happens across all fandoms called the ‘Big Bang’ where authors and artists get together and have a very short span of time to write and illustrate a work of fiction for a set fandom, ships, et cetera. Their requirements are usually 20,000 words, and that is my goal for this. I am attempting to hit 20,000 words by October the 23rd, when I go on vacation to visit some friends. It seems like, since each chapter thus far has been about five pages long, that I might actually break this goal, before completing the story. In which case, I keep trucking on.
You’ve boasted about the music, what do you write to anyway? This! This is the question I have wanted to answer probably the most, you could say. And I am happy to oblige.
The Lion the Beast The Beat by Grace Potter and the Nocturnals is this stories namesake. And each chapter, relates to a song that I have used to write. The songs on this list so far include but are not limited to:
Can You Feel the Thunder by Susanna Sundfor
Some of the songs may seem obvious while some are more obscure. As for the scene between Draco and Hermione by the pond, the songs used for that are more instrumental. Things like Requiem, K. 626: Lacrimosa Dies Illa and Carmina Burana: O Fortunaby the London Philharmonic Orchestra for the discussions about Death Eaters. And Concerto for Violin Op 8 No. 1 “Spring”: Allegro performed by I Virtuosi Di Lugano. And finally Autumn: Colors / Dance by George Winston.
Why do the characters seem so subdued? Yes I have noticed this, and I admittedly could put more effort into making the interactions between them more hostile. But at least, for now, where we are, Draco and Hermione are both scared out of their wits by the ideal of failure. If they fail, they are both dead. This is important to understand for…reasons. As it stands, Draco is caught between being in awe at her bravery, and very much hating everything about her for being a Muggle-born Witch. In my not-so-canon-but-still-kind-of spin on events, his family is losing everything as the Ministry of Magic tries to choke out Death Eaters, and affiliates. Hermione for her part, is showing a maturity beyond her years, in trying to put the past aside in order to save both of their asses but one never knows when and if maturity will splinter…All I can say for now is…I suspect, there is a possibility of some rather passionate arguments later on. And even possibly a few good NC-17 scenes that I will post elsewhere and link, in the future.
Any hints about the future? Only one. To quote a personal favorite musical power house; “It’s always darkest before the dawn.”
